well not really liking jennifer love hewitt, i know what you did last summer films put me off her. and alisha was in friends wasn't keen on her and David was the bad guy in Roswell (way to many DVD collections sorry)so with all this going against ghost whisperer I wasn't holding out much hope for liking it but I have to say from the fist ten minuets I've been hooked I love it I love the characters I've cryed like a baby at every episode this has got to be the best show like thisi have ever seen. I have medium too but I got bored with it and didn't finish the series on it but ghost whisperer is amazing I love it and cant wait for the next season trust me if your a believer or even a skeptic who wonders if this kinda stuff is real watch this show it will open your heart and eyes to the possibility there really is life after death amazing i love it .
Love Hewitt?...then this ghostly offering is right up your street........2007-02-10
OK so I admit it...I initially tuned in to Ghost Whisperer for the gorgeous Miss Hewitt...(probably the main reason that God gave men eyes)
Apart from her I really didn't think that this series would have much going for it...maybe thinking that it was devised as a simple filler to plug a gap left by one of a dozen such shows.
But, I have to confess...and indeed tip my hat to a show that (although far from perfection) never failed to move me.
It's fair to say that it's old fashioned in structure and content...one could even say it was a substantial step backwards in TV terms...in the sense that it stay's (for the most part) well away from the inherent cruelty, bad language and gross-out gore that seems to litter most modern horror/fantasy....whether you're for or against this more placid style of story telling...I believe it works here.
Even the setting steers you away from big city life and instead, squeezes you into communal town life...and death, and stay's cosily within these Willoughby-style boundary's.
If you wanted to be picky you could complain that it follows a charted course too perfectly...right down to the clichéd bright light of death at the end of each episode...However, this radiance is never really shown, so doesn't become anywhere near as silly or tiresome as you might imagine it would.
You could also argue that it's very slight in structure...yes, maybe so...but this seems to work perfectly within it's own meagre boundaries. The cast of characters is small (apart from the double episode finale) and are not called upon to give Emmy stealing performances...though in saying that, Miss Hewitt does have the great ability to skip around the very edges of mawkishness without ever toppling in. As well as serving as producer, she effortlessly holds the whole proceedings together with a believably caring performance...that I for one, didn't believe she had in her.
I dare say that in it's current format it'll be difficult to stretch it beyond two seasons without it being cursed by repetition, and where those creaky doors will only hide creakier scripts....TV history has shown us that the vast majority of the best episodes of X-Files/Twilight Zone/and the like, were usually Sardined into the first couple of seasons so I'll not hold my breath for a really long stay.
Yes, it may start off at a slow pace but it's a character piece that needs time to draw you in and make you care about the people/spirits involved....If you hadn't cared about them, the final revelation of season one (which, by the way, was brilliantly disguised) wouldn't have had half the impact.
Ghost Whisperer certainly didn't have the divine power to convert me into believing in the existence of an all-enveloping tunnel to the Hereafter...but in saying that, it's absence from my weekly tally of fantasy shows (along with the demise of ITV's excellent `Afterlife') will make my week feel just a little too spookless....so this release will help me bridge the gap to series two.
A hearty 4 out of 5 for those who enjoyed `Ghost'
