WHAT A FILM!.......2004-10-22
If you want an original, funny film that you can watch over and over again...with Kiwi accents, youve found it!
Stickmen.......2004-05-14
Kiwi fun.......2003-07-17
A cool & funny film with some nice quotable lines........2003-02-09
My first impression of this film was that it really wanted to be "Poolhall Junkies", wanted to have all those things above but failed. Having seen it to the end, however, I decided that was an unfair assessment.
Being a bit of a pool player myself, (at least I'd like to think so!) this is a type of film that appeals to me, and inevitably I'll have to compare it to other movies with pool as their subject.
"Stickmen" doesn't have the atmosphere and acting talent of Robert Rossen's 1961 classic "The Hustler", but then again the latter is an all-time classic movie, and few actors can match up to Paul Newman at his best.
For action on the table, Stickmen falls way short of "Poolhall Junkies" which features a dazzling array of unbelievable trick shots. Most of the shots played in "Stickmen" wouldn't cause any excitment in your average bar or pool club, whereas in "Poolhall Junkies" it's obvious that the shots are played by professionals. The storyline of these two films is similar, but in general "Poolhall Junkies" is by far the superior film. Having said that, "Stickmen" is very enjoyable and has a lot to offer. The plot keeps you guessing, the acting is pretty good, (even if some of the characters are a little stereotypical), and the New Zealand accents are kind of cool.
This film is definitely worth watching, but the two other films mentioned - "The Hustler" and "Poolhall Junkies" are must-see movies. "Stickmen" achieves its aim: it is a darkly humourous film that is, as my fellow reviewer Robbie says, sauve and sexy. It definitely has a (lacking a better word - but I'm sure you know what I mean) 'cool' feel to it. Over all the film is very watchable. My only objection is the two supposedly English football fans at the beginning have distictly kiwi accents, and also why would a Newcastle fan be playing doubles with a Man U fan?! Never mind...
Watch all the films mentioned if you can.
