2 out of 5 stars Guilt-Ridden and Shallow.......2008-01-02

Victoria Wood is almost an embarrassment in this series. I have always liked her as a performer, but this is almost cringing as she visits ex-colonies with her liberal guilt hanging heavily in every place and every sentence. The film locations are great and there are some good informative sequences, but there is far too much retrospective relevatism and judgementalism. No funny bits either!

    Amazon.co.uk Review

In revealing the strength of the marriage which left Queen Victoria so devastated as a widow, the colourful costume drama Victoria and Albert could almost serve as a prequel to the film Mrs Brown. In common with that dramatisation, this TV drama features performances (and cameos) from some of Britain's finest actors, this time including Jonathan Pryce, David Suchet, Penelope Wilton, Peter Ustinov, Richard Briers and the wonderful Nigel Hawthorne as Lord Melbourne.

Victoria Hamilton and Jonathan Firth are the impressive leads who command the viewer's attention through the lengthy process of turning Albert and Victoria's arranged marriage into a love story, from their first inauspicious meetings, to Albert's dissatisfaction over the impotence of his position. Concentrating as it does on Victoria's early reign means the drama does tend to skip over the couples' later years with their children and disappointments over their heir, Bertie, but overall this story has all the romance, settings, make-up and wigs of a fine costume drama.

On the DVD: Victoria and Albert comes as a two-disc set that features an informative 25-minute "making of" documentary presented by the producer, that includes contributions from the Screenwriter, Director, stars Jonathan Firth and Penelope Wilton, and the Director of Photography. The filmographies are somewhat abridged but the Victoria Timeline is interesting for those wanting to learn more about the authentic history of events. --Rachel Ediss

4 out of 5 stars Victoria Hamiliton and Jonathan Firth at their best as Victoria and Albert!!!.......2007-06-05

I purchased the set (without actually watching it) upon the reccommendation of a friend and the reviews written on this production.
I'm so glad to own this production.
At first I was not sure what to expect and I was not at all impressed with it when I first viewed it. Thinking on the production and viewing it again the second time I have come to apperciate the production and the leading actors do an amazing job as Victoria and Albert.
I especially like how Albert married Victoria even though he was not in love with her as Victoria was with Albert. But he took his marriage vows very seriously and he grew to love Victoria and was faithful to her.
Victoria and Albert were very moral people and they as the first family wanted to set the example to the country.

In my view there are some sences that I would of perfered if they were not in the production but they are shone upon in a bad light by the royal couple which I think is good. (these days good morals are a non existence)

If you are interested in the royals or a truly amazing love story that actually happened you well enjoy this production.

5 out of 5 stars Moving account of the early years of Victoria's reign.......2002-07-21

...It charts the romance between Queen Victoria and her Prince Consort.
Great direction and beautiful acting, particularly from Nigel Hawthorne (in a final role before his untimely death), Diana Rigg and Victoria Hamilton (who should be set for big things thanks to her performance here). A very moving story and my only criticism would be that it moves very quickly through Albert's final years. It could really have done with a third episode. I have to admit I'm writing this before I've bought the DVD, but the programme made such an impression on me when it was shown in August 2001 that I'll certainly be buying it. Highly recommended.
