Clearly American.......2007-07-03
If you are one who enjoys an American movie at snails pace this is a film for you.
Personally I would give it a miss.
The main characters are far from believable or credible. There is no chemistry there whatsoever but we are expected to believe that the professor who hitherto has regarded herself as a conventional married heterosexual suddenly winds up in bed with our other 'heroine' of the sorry piece.
For a decent film showing any ounce of understanding as to what it is to be lesbian, any attempt at a storyline and a film with something worthwhile to say at many levels try the Indian director, Deepa Mehta, and her film 'Fire'.
As a lesbian myself I found "Desert Hearts" just a bit too bland, superficial and purile.
A Classic.......2006-04-30
I first saw this film years ago and was delighted when my partner bought it for me. An absolute must for your film collection. The characters were believable, the story line tastefully written. The love scene reflected mixed emotions ranging from innocence to passion and the ending was extremely appropriate. BUY IT GIRLS !!!
A timeless classic.......2005-12-28
Desert Hearts is one of those movies I'll watch again and again. It's a romance, pure and simple. The fact the two lovers are both women who come together in the social climate of the late 50's makes it all the more poignant. The two leads develop naturally throughout, and all the characters are three-dimensional, with believable emotions and interaction with each other. Helen Shaver gives a wonderful portayal of maturity as Vivian, the older woman escaping a stale, loveless relationship to find a new life beginning in Reno, Nevada. Patricia Charbonneau as Cay is in excellent form in her first major role, showing the younger woman's determination to find her own path, no matter what the world thinks of her choice. The scene where they make love for the first time is entirely natural, and erotically-charged. The only minor criticism I have is that some scenes do drag a little, especially those where Vivian is alone after arriving at the ranch where she stays pending her divorce. Beyond that minor quibble, it's a gem of a movie.
Palpable emotions........2005-10-30
What I really liked about this film is the realistic way in which the doubt, uneasiness and apprehension of a first-time lesbian love is approached by in an up-till-then, straight mature woman.
The emotions, the quickened heart-beat, the intense glances are all palpable. The intensity, slowly but steadily increases, to unfold in a passionate yet tender love scene that eventually bonds the characters together.....
sweet.......2005-08-24
You've got to love a classic. This has one of the most beautiful love scenes ever done in a movie. The story is full of life, and the charrecters are believeble. To put it shortly, if you are a lesbian or bi you have to own this movie in your collection.
