L'Avventura 1960

Superb Criterion Release.

L'Avventura was directed in 1960 by what many would regard now as one of the truly great directors of all time, Michelangelo Antonioni. `L'Avventura' is now regarded as being the first part in a quadrilogy of films followed by `La Notte' (1961), E'clisse (1962) and `Red Desert' (1964) all dealing with the themes of modern alienation and the human condition. The feature that sets `L'Avventura apart from the other three films though is that `L'Avventura still has a strong masculine, if immature and spiritually impotent, character. Later films would concentrate on the female character to a far greater extant.

L'Avventura is essentially a road movie with an objective that is not important to the film, so I won't say anything about that. What is important is that Antonioni is writing a whole new cinematic language in his use of camera angle and position within a scene, actors being filmed from behind and characters entering a scene from what would appear to be the wrong direction. The scenes and composition on the island are perhaps some of the best I've ever watched. Antonioni also uses architecture as a metaphor in many scenes and would be explored to a greater extent in his next two films `La Notte' and `E'clisse'. Saying that though, there are some Hitchcockian clichés in `L'Avventura' such as the train entering the tunnel as a metaphor for intercourse. It can sometimes be difficult for a younger audience to understand why `L'Avventura' is so important because so many of these ideas seem familiar to us now, but nothing was made like this before it. The audio commentary on this disc by film historian Gene Youngblood is an invaluable tool to a greater understanding of this films position and status in cinema history and is highly recommended. The transfer is superb and presented in 1.77:1 and enhanced for 16x 9 televisions.

L'Avventura starred Monica Vitti (E'clisse, 1962; Red Desert,1964), Gabriele Ferzetti (Once Upon A Time In The West, 1969) and Lea Massari (Mummur Of The Heart, 1971). Other similar films I would recommend are `La Dolce Vita' (Federico Felini, 1960); `Picnic At Hanging Rock' (Peter Weir, 1975) and `Paris, Texas' (Wim Wenders, 1984). `L'Avventura won the Special Jury Prize at Canne in 1960 yet still feels like a fresh and modern film and gets better every time I see it. It's in my top 5 greatest films ever made without a doubt.

Key work from Michelangelo Antonioni........2002-11-28

1959's L'aventura was the film that moved Antonioni into the international realm of directors- it is far more diverting and perplexing than the later, somewhat over-rated Blow Up (1966). The story, as such, is not unlike Peter Weir's later Picnic at Hanging Rock- though there is just one disappearance here. The plot is fairly simple- people are on a cruise of the Mediterranean, Sandro and lover Anna are on it with her friend Claudia- on an island Anna vanishes, never to be found and Claudia replaces Anna as Sandro's lover.

This is a very strange film, with interesting/oblique compositions courtesy of photographer Aldo Scarvarda; L'aventura along with The Red Desert are Antonioni's finest works (later films like Blow Up & Zabriskie Point have moments and are visually stunning, but as a whole leave me cold)- and it ranks next to another oblique film of this period, Alain Resnais's L'Annee derniere a Marienbad (1961)- which is equally fantastic and a presient for modern films like Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive & Open Your Eyes. Antonioni and L'aventura may not to be your taste, but it still demands to be seen by those with an interest in cinema beyond mere entertainment...

Missie Grows Up.......2005-08-21

Though "Love's Enduring Promise" doesn't measure up to its predecessor, "Love Comes Softy," it is nevertheless lovely to follow up on Clark Davis and his family, who share their joys and sorrows, and their faith, strength, and commitment with one another. Missie is now a young lady, with serious choices to make. She is a schoolteacher, and is being pursued by a wealthy surveyor, but when Clark suffers an accident and can no longer work the farm, a young man comes to their aid, and the viewer knows long before Missie does, that he is a better match for her.

The dialog and scene progression don't flow as well in this 2nd film, but I wouldn't mind seeing a 3rd and even 4th installment, as it is refreshing to see this type of family entertainment, where people speak without cursing, and keep their clothes on. It would make an excellent TV series, as it is full of wonderful characters, and themes of hope and redemption. Directed by Michael Landon Jr. for Hallmark, it is a little like his father's wildly successful "Little House on the Prairie." Based on a novel by Janette Oke, the 19th century plot is filmed in beautiful California locations, like Sable Ranch in Canyon County, with cinematography by Maximo Munzi.

The cast: January Jones is good as Missie, with Mackenzie Astin as Grant, her rich suitor, and Logan Bartholomew, who is an exceptionally handsome and capable actor. as Nate. Katherine Haigl repeats her role as Marty, and as Clark, Dale Midkiff once again is superb. Cliff De Young plays Zeke, an embittered man with many scars that need healing. Total running time is 87 minutes.

Amazing Yoga DVD!!!.......2005-12-29

This is probably the best yoga DVD I've seen , I have many yoga DVD's and this dvd's features, quality and so many possibilities to design yor own workout beat all the others , no question about it. There's 4 complete yoga sessions to choose from : a 45 min beginner sesion, solar flow 1 & 2 (each about 1 hr 25 min) and a lunar flow - 75 min . All workouts consists of short segments and by the "yoga matrix" feature you can tailor your own workout out of those segments. Most of the dvd is pretty intermediate to advanced level except the begginer workout , her workouts are definitely challenging but everytime I do one of them I feel amazing and energized but also calm and peaceful because of her soothing voice and pretty long savasana (corpse pose) segment.
There's also a great "core abs" segment that is pretty challenging and great for the abs, also all of her workouts are unique and flows really well. So I hope by now I already made you buy this dvd.

A wonderfully realized yoga DVD in which an ancient creative art form meets beautifully with modern technology.

Feature-film-quality photography and a chilled out music track allow you to escape with the delightful Shiva Rea to the Maldives and to Kerala, India -- as well as into your practice. A great motivating tool for anyone with a home practice organized around their furniture!

Very clearly recorded and narrated, this DVD offers four different practices and/or the option of mixing elements from each depending on your practice level or mood and what you feel like emphasizing. Cleverly, the "yoga matrix" menu is carefully designed so that you sequence your practice safely and intelligently. You can isolate individual postures/sequences, but if you create a sequence using more than one section you can't place your "dessert" before your "appetizer", as it were!

A great tool for vinyasa yoga teachers looking for choreographic inspiration, too, with plenty of mellow stuff to offer beginners aspiring to work within yoga's more fluid form. Nice to see the often neglected abs (uddiyana region, i.e. core) given a special whirl, as well.

Disc Two has more of a "magazine" format, containing some brief yogi interviews, bios of people behind the scenes involved with the DVD, travel footage -- and even a couple of promos (dare I say ads?) for yoga facilities/facilitators which I couldn't seem to fast forward through. But hardly obnoxious, and you can always *choose* what to start up!

Very user-friendly and highly recommended.

Fun and does what it says.......2008-02-19

This is the second dvd from the firm my wife has bought. The first was 4 months ago and she has been doing regularly since. A difference was seen within 10 times of doing the DVD and she found it was fun to do, even our 3 year old sometimes joins in. So onto Jiggle Free, again fun and after the first time doing, she felt the aches from the workout.
If you like my wife have tried the bike, cross trainer to no avail, do not have time for the gym, then this is for you.
