Tracy Shaw - Salsacise [2001]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Coronation Street star Tracy Shaw is more than just a pretty face, she's a cracking co-presenter of Salsacise, a fun blend of salsa and aerobics. Her outfits are enough to inspire any couch potato into getting out and having fun, and her energy is infectious. Whether or not you can keep up with her moves doesn't matter. So long as you keep moving this is an enjoyable work-out that you can do just as easily alone, with your other half or with your mates. Instead of the usual fitness studio the setting is a nightclub, marking this out as exercise territory for the young. After just 10 minutes you'll feel the effects--and that's just the warm-up. The routines (Twist and Shake, Kick Ass Combo and Mambo Mania) owe more to aerobics than salsa. In fact, music aside, there's virtually no real salsa. But the salsa rhythm and spirit is a good way into exercise, and the routines are bound to rub off onto that dance floor. There is even a Fab Abs (mat) section to complete, working out every part of the body. No fitness jargon, no references to dieting and slimming, no lecturing: just pure fun.--Lorna V

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing..........2007-11-06

This DVD is not what I expected. The moves are very simple and rather boring. I suppose it may be good for beginners because the steps are easy to pick up. Although it is not a hard work at all Tracy tries to show how hard it is and keeps complaning about it on and on and on. It is rather annoying and discouraging. Finally, the abs section is ridiculous, a complete zero. Saying that, I would not recommend this DVD to anybody. As to me, I'll stick to my favourite workout - Lilia Kopylova's Latinasize. This wonderful workout gives me a great energy boost every morning and really makes my day. I would stricty recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great workout all round.......2007-09-06

I rented this on VHS (how technology has evolved!) a few years ago from a library and loved it. I recently bought it on DVD to start my exercise regime at home and I still love it.

The tuition is straight forward and easy, they take the steps slowly. Its not exactly salsa but it incorporates the moves and gives you a proper work out, my calfs are still aching from 2 days ago!

Downsides are that the "fab abs" section isnt long enough and they dont go into toning specifically which I would prefer but I have other vids for that but you do feel the burn in your muscles from the dancing. The instructor can get slightly annoying with his "hey heys" and "huhs" (if you've seen it you'll know what I mean!) but hes very good at what he does. Tracy is out of breath which has been criticised but I like that about it, makes me feel like im not alone and not watching some toned, fitness goddess!

Over all this is a great, fun workout you can have a laugh with, invite your mates over and get fit together.

5 out of 5 stars jennifer aniston body.......2006-07-12

i bought this dvd 3 years ago but i lost it. My mother kept asking me where is this dvd that made u the perfect body which u never had. So I went and bought it again. For me, perfect body is jennifer aniston style, toned and sexy but not muscular, pumped-up rambo style which most of the other exercise programmes do. I've bought many dvd's which I agree that they are hard work and it is great BUT I don't want big muscles and footballers' legs. I want sexy toning and definition, which I find more feminine and u DEFINITELY get this with tracy. Many have criticised that tracy gets tired. Well tracy is humane, and gets tired like all of us! I wouldn't like to see her as a disciplined soldier! Another plus is that because u make a lot of steps and moves, u are too busy concentrating that time goes by without realising it. It is not like "drop down and give me 20 push-ups", where u feel both the difficulty and the boredom! And last but not least, the latin spirit...I already feel like a godess!!!

2 out of 5 stars Dissappointing Excercise Video.......2006-03-15

This was dissapointing and focused mainly on Tracy Shaws outfits and her attempts to flirt with the male instructor. She appeared to be struggling and out of breath most of the video and definately not very fit, not a good advertisement for the video. The abs section was a joke with Tracy not even trying to do the excercises and the instructor giving up. I do not receommend this video to any one, even the Salsa sections were too repeatitive.

5 out of 5 stars Salsa + Exercise + Tracy and Michael = Impressive Stuff!.......2006-02-26

This is a really good workout which is fun, upbeat and tiring. The presenters, Tracy and Michael, are friendly and energetic. Tracy comes across as a bubbly woman with a charming ‘Up North’ accent and an infectious giggle. She messes up the moves a bit but that doesn’t really matter as Michael is always spot on and calls out what is coming next and Tracy corrects her mistakes quickly and carries on with it. She also wears some flamboyant outfits that are quite amusing to look at, and she can carry them off with her willowy figure. Michael also has a lovely accent (Australian?) and is obviously a talented dancer (and very good looking!) The music is good too, not pop or rock but latin-style with drum beats, trumpets, a kind of live band feel to it, which is very nice to dance to.

The workout lasts about 47 minutes and the sections are (with approximate times):

1) 10 mins Warm-Up, a few stretches but mainly a combination of four moves – mambos, cha cha chas, twist marches and hip marches. These are the basic moves that the rest of the workout builds on. This section really got my heart rate up and I was concentrating so hard on getting the footwork right that the time went by very quickly.
2) 9 mins Twist and Shake, my favourite section. It involves grapevines, kicks, wild arm movements and a bit of leaping about. I had to modify the section slightly so I could fit it into the space behind my sofa – so instead of moving forwards and backwards for the v-step and arm rolls I turn and do it side to side. Very tiring indeed.
3) 9 mins Kick Ass Combo, my least favourite of the three dance routines but it isn’t bad by any measure. It involves some kicks and stomping movements but I prefer when it nears the end and some other movements are added that involve jumping about a bit, as it adds some variety.
4) 9 mins Mambo Mania, my second favourite section. It involves more mambos with some extended twist and hip marches. One of the moves is quite hard to keep up with. At the end I feel as if I’ve done a good cardio workout.
5) 4 mins Fab Abs, a section made up of sit-up variations. It is hard but manageable for me (I normally struggle a bit with toning exercises in DVDs) so it would probably be too easy for fitter people and they’d have to add repetitions (I’d say I’m at an intermediate level). Sit-ups are the only toning exercises so there are no press-ups, leg raises etc but that follows along with the premise of the DVD – it’s about having fun and dancing to build up some sweat, not painful floor work.
6) 6 mins Cool Down involving the usual type of thing, marching, touch-steps and stretches.

Overall, this is a fun, effective workout with lively presenters you won’t mind watching again and again. Some people have commented that it isn’t very hard and you don’t feel as if you’re burning calories but I think that if you put the effort in it does work. Sure, if you do the bare minimum you won’t get out of breath but if you put lots of energy into your leg and arm movements and make the jumps and steps very energetic then you certainly will sweat and feel it, although I admit that you don’t feel near death from exhaustion by the end of it, which I think is a good thing as you look forward to doing it. Some of the steps are a bit hard to pick up first time, but after a few goes I feel much more confident and can do all of them.

Recommended for people who feel that the fun factor is essential for sticking to an exercise regime.

the main thing people should know about this film is that it stars Bill and Ted and Death, Keanu Reeves stars as Ortiz the dog boy and he spends the whole film in heavy dog makeup. if that is not enough then how about Mr T as the bearded lady?! Brooke Shields as a talk show host with hideous legs? 13 milkmen (including one in a frogsuit, one as a cow, one as a worm, one as a sock puppet and one which is a hammer) and some of the funniest visual humour you have ever seen involving a ginger troll. oh and it's got the druggy brother of 'Blossom' in it too.
