Amazon.co.uk Review
Philadelphia wasn't the first movie about AIDS (it followed such worthy independent films as Parting Glances and Longtime Companion), but it was the first Hollywood studio picture to take AIDS as its primary subject. In that sense, Philadelphia is a historically important film. As such, it's worth remembering that director Jonathan Demme (Melvin and Howard, Something Wild, The Silence of the Lambs) wasn't interested in preaching to the converted; he set out to make a film that would connect with a mainstream audience. And he succeeded. Philadelphia was not only a hit, it also won Oscars for Bruce Springsteen's haunting "The Streets of Philadelphia," and for Tom Hanks as the gay lawyer Andrew Beckett who is unjustly fired by his firm because he has AIDS. Denzel Washington is another lawyer (functioning as the mainstream-audience surrogate) who reluctantly takes Beckett's case and learns to overcome his misconceptions about the disease, about those who contract it, and about gay people in general. The combined warmth and humanism of Hanks and Demme were absolutely essential to making this picture a success. The cast also features Jason Robards, Antonio Banderas (as Beckett's lover), Joanne Woodward, and Robert Ridgely, and, of course, those Demme regulars Charles Napier, Tracey Walter and Roger Corman. --Jim Emerson

A film to change your life.......2005-06-27
Two men fighting for the same thing, justice.......2005-01-19
Andrew Beckett (Hanks), a promising young lawyer who works for the legal company of Wyant-Wheeler. Headed by Charles Wheeler (Robards), Andrw is accepted as a senior partner with the company's higher-ups. Everything seems to go smoothly for Andrew, that is until he is fired by his partners for misplacing an important document. The real reason is it's because Andrew is homosexual and his partners dicover that he is HIV-positive. Determined to see justice done, Andrew goes through lawyer after lawyer to represent him, until he goes to small-time personal injury lawyer Joe Miller (Washington), who Andrew worked with on an earlier case, and asks him to represent him. Joe initially refuses, but after seeing how homosexuals are treated, Miler agrees and the two men set off to launch a heroic and amazing struggle that sees justice done, with very sad consequences.
Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington easily give the standout performances in this picture of prejudice, hate and fear of homosexuals and AIDS. This film not only makes you wonder, it makes you think of what you're views toward the gays in the world are like, they may be a fellow colleague, or a fellow school student or may even be a member of you're own family. Hanks portrayl of Beckett shows that homosexuality doesn't change a man or woman, it makes them as equal to anyone whose straight or bisexual. Jonathan Demme has made a film that doesn't only bring two of the finest actors in the world together, he shows that the the willpower is one of the strongest powers in all the world, that a person can change their view of gays or AIDS and they can grow to see them as normal people.
A Tear-Jerking Film.......2004-10-20
