4 out of 5 stars Over the top? Absolutely!.......2006-05-11

Here's another 80's cheese fest - and absolutley fantastic it is too. Kenny Loggins was the king of soundtracks in the 80's and he comes up trumps once again for this movie. But the rest of the tracks hold their own and make a great soundtrack overall. You kinda know what you're getting with a Stallone soundtrack but if thats your bag (and it's certainly mine) you won't go too far wrong with this. Keep on truckin' !

3 out of 5 stars Bold sounds of the 80's.......2003-10-15

After watching this picture from a young age the tunes have lodged there sounds in my head for the past 17 years. I remeber in the early 90's i saw this title in a second hand music store on LP Vinyl, with no money in my pocket i thought ill come back and pick it up again to my supprise the next time i did so it was gone. Thanks to the net i am now abe to listen to these great tracks when ever i fell like it. Who ever said silence was golden did'nt hear this soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Another great film for all stallone fans and for the family........2000-08-05

This film is non stop, hard hitting arm wrestling film about a father (stallone)who is seperated from his son and tries to win him back but the grandfather of the boy is stopping that. He is a trucker that is on his way to Vegas to win a new truck and to win that he must win the world arm wrestling contest. Along the way he must win custurdy of his son, win an arm wrestling contest andkeep on trukin!. A lot to fit i might ad but stallone delivers in this film big time. A must buy for all film, stallone or just lookin for exellent film to watch again and again... yes and enjoy brillint film.

      Amazon.co.uk Review

Philadelphia wasn't the first movie about AIDS (it followed such worthy independent films as Parting Glances and Longtime Companion), but it was the first Hollywood studio picture to take AIDS as its primary subject. In that sense, Philadelphia is a historically important film. As such, it's worth remembering that director Jonathan Demme (Melvin and Howard, Something Wild, The Silence of the Lambs) wasn't interested in preaching to the converted; he set out to make a film that would connect with a mainstream audience. And he succeeded. Philadelphia was not only a hit, it also won Oscars for Bruce Springsteen's haunting "The Streets of Philadelphia," and for Tom Hanks as the gay lawyer Andrew Beckett who is unjustly fired by his firm because he has AIDS. Denzel Washington is another lawyer (functioning as the mainstream-audience surrogate) who reluctantly takes Beckett's case and learns to overcome his misconceptions about the disease, about those who contract it, and about gay people in general. The combined warmth and humanism of Hanks and Demme were absolutely essential to making this picture a success. The cast also features Jason Robards, Antonio Banderas (as Beckett's lover), Joanne Woodward, and Robert Ridgely, and, of course, those Demme regulars Charles Napier, Tracey Walter and Roger Corman. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Profoundly sad and moving.......2007-05-05

This is a profoundly sad and moving film about a lawyer called Andrew Beckett, played by Tom Hanks, who has contracted AIDS and ends up being forced out of his job, he believes, because of his bosses homophobia. Andy approaches a lawyer called Joe, played by Denzel Washington, who is initially homophobic, then reluctantly agreeing to represent Andy in his court case.

As Andy's condition worsens, their friendship develops, and the homophobic barriers are gradually broken. Hanks and Washington are both stunning in their roles, provoking a myriad of emotions in the viewer. Indeed, this film is deeply emotional and poignant all the way through, highlighting the true horror of AIDS, but also the hurtful homophobia that so many people have to deal with.

The spite and predjudice of Andy's employers is gruelling to watch, as is his deterioration, and if there is anyone out there who doesn't feel a tear in their eye at the ending of the film, they must have ice in their veins instead of blood.

5 out of 5 stars Oscar winning performances from Hanks and Denzel.......2007-04-15

This movie is extremely touching and evocative. This movie will make you appreciate your life and want to fight for a cause. Tom Hanks gives the best performance of his career (in my opinion), as does Denzel Washington, who was absolutely astounding. I've never cried so much in a movie in my entire life. It's absolutely amazing. WATCH IT!

5 out of 5 stars A film to change your life.......2005-06-27

I can honestly say that few films have actually changed my life but this is one that did.
I grew up with AIDS adverts on the tele but nothing prepared me for the emotional rollercoaster I felt watching this film.
Dealing with such an issue in a caring and sensative way it makes you care about the people in the film. Not just Hanks (at his usual brilliant self) but also his partner and his family and friends.
This is a must see movie for people of all ages.
Youngsters should see it to understand not only the terrible effect that AIDS has but also how to deal with people who might be a bit different from you.
I cant rate this movie high enough.

5 out of 5 stars Two men fighting for the same thing, justice.......2005-01-19

Nobody would ever have thought that you could make a film that explores the two subjects of Homosexuality and AIDS, and also expose society's prejudice for them, but Jonathan Demme, along with screenwriter Ron Nyswaner, made a film exactly like that. Teaming up Tom Hanks and Denzel Washinghton who star as as two lawyers who fight the legal system and society's prejudice to expose the hate and fear of AIDS and Homosexuality in one of the most original and amazing movies ever to grace the silver screen.

Andrew Beckett (Hanks), a promising young lawyer who works for the legal company of Wyant-Wheeler. Headed by Charles Wheeler (Robards), Andrw is accepted as a senior partner with the company's higher-ups. Everything seems to go smoothly for Andrew, that is until he is fired by his partners for misplacing an important document. The real reason is it's because Andrew is homosexual and his partners dicover that he is HIV-positive. Determined to see justice done, Andrew goes through lawyer after lawyer to represent him, until he goes to small-time personal injury lawyer Joe Miller (Washington), who Andrew worked with on an earlier case, and asks him to represent him. Joe initially refuses, but after seeing how homosexuals are treated, Miler agrees and the two men set off to launch a heroic and amazing struggle that sees justice done, with very sad consequences.

Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington easily give the standout performances in this picture of prejudice, hate and fear of homosexuals and AIDS. This film not only makes you wonder, it makes you think of what you're views toward the gays in the world are like, they may be a fellow colleague, or a fellow school student or may even be a member of you're own family. Hanks portrayl of Beckett shows that homosexuality doesn't change a man or woman, it makes them as equal to anyone whose straight or bisexual. Jonathan Demme has made a film that doesn't only bring two of the finest actors in the world together, he shows that the the willpower is one of the strongest powers in all the world, that a person can change their view of gays or AIDS and they can grow to see them as normal people.

            5 out of 5 stars A Tear-Jerking Film.......2004-10-20

This film is a masterpiece. I never get bored of it and it's always make you want to cry. The ending is very ssad with the Home Videos and Neil Youngs masterpiece of a song called Philadelphia.
