5 out of 5 stars At last!!! A Yoga DVD which gives you a good workout!.......2008-03-03

After continuously reading about the benefits of Yoga I have been searching for a yoga class or DVD that I have enjoyed.
Of the three classes I have tried they all focused on very few poses and a lot of relaxing! As a very hyper person I wanted to take advantage of Yogas muscle building skills and not the relaxing part!!! (I know I should enjoy both!)
Anyway, the couple of DVD I have bought have also been far too slow paced.
Now this one....................thrst time I tried it I was sucked in straight away. It is well explained, easy to follow and a real good workout!!! The next day all of my muscles ached and I haven't felt like that since I started working out 10 yeasr ago.
It is brilliant and I really feel like I have had a brilliant workout. Definitly try it, it is hard going but great!!!!!! 5 STARS!!!

5 out of 5 stars Difficult at first but rewarding.......2008-03-01

As neither a complete beginner or an expert i decided to buy a yoga dvd that i could do at home when i had the time. I read plently of reviews on amazon and this looked like one of the best.

I would definately recommend watching the dvd through first without attempting it to get an idea of what some of the names mean (especially if you are a beginner). This is because the movements are quite fast paced and it is off putting to keep looking up to try and follow what Rodney Yee is doing. This however is not a weak point as after completing the section you feel fully stretched out and relaxed. There are a variety of positions that work your entire body.

The positions are set to relaxing music and can be fairly difficult but with practise they become easier and you become more supple and focused.

5 out of 5 stars dynamic, challenging, engaging.......2008-02-05

This is a great way to get a lot out of a home yoga practice. I practised in the morning for several years and attended a weekly class with a very inspiring teacher until I moved and couldn't find a new class. I got this and found it does the job of a class pretty well if you can't get to one. It starts off gradually waking your body up by slowly coaxing it into sun salutations before adding variations such as extended side angle. Of the four sections, I only use the first and last as I have neither the time nor the strength to do more.

Rodney Yee's directions are pleasantly quiet and clear but they are few which means that this would really not suit a beginner. However, his instructions are very insightful and helpful in the tiny actions of a pose which make it come to life. I finally overcame my difficulties with triangle pose (and it is now one of my favourites) through his guidance which I think is a remarkable feat for a DVD.

This is a very challenging practice but for the guidance you receive and the energy, strength, focus and alignment you develop it is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A challenge with good results... My favourite!.......2008-01-17

I love this DVD, combines flexiblity/stength/relaxation very well and i don't need to look at the moniter to follow either Rodney Yee explains this very well.

Not for beginners, would need to be of resonable fitness to follow this.
But perfect for those who are bored doing the celebrity dvds with numberous child-pose's.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2008-01-08

This is a great Yoga DVD. It is definitely not aimed at beginners but those with a fair amount of yoga experience will find this session easily accessible. Rodney's tuition is clear and precise, and as said above he seems to say the right things that help you into your asanas. You find yourself following his instruction with ease, which is not always the case with Yoga DVDs. It allows you to develop your practice, you definitely feel that you are pushing yourself physically during the session whilst the calming voice of Rodney and the beautiful setting in which he practices settles the mind. Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Gymnastics, not YOGA.......2006-05-03

I bought this dvd because I read all the good reviews that it got and I thouhgt that I could save time by cutting my yoga practice in bits, but I did not like this dvd at all. She goes to fast, speaks to much all the time that it give you stress, because you wants to follow as much as possible. She does not give you the time to get deep in to the poses and work with your breathing. She does though explains what the execices are good for and which areas they are working on but other than that, I thought that the quality was not good also because I am used to practice yoga and I thought that this dvd is pure gymnastics, because the way the poses are done do not give you any benefities as yoga poses, they are simply strech work out.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Yoga!!.......2006-02-22

I recently purchased this DVD from Amazon; it arrived quickly (which was a God send because I was keen to start getting fitter).
I find this DVD challenging, rewarding and relaxing.
Of course a beginner like me cannot do all of the poses but after 5 days of using it I am already more supple and toned.
It is amazing to stretch out the entire body and to use yoga as a catalyst for your daily work out programme.
It has really reminded me of how vital it is to keep my body strong, supple but most of all 'workable' again!
    Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Barbara Currie - Total Body Plan [2002].......2006-01-23

I have tried yoga classes at the gym and found it difficult to keep up when learning the positions so i bought this dvd and find it an excellent way to learn yoga at a comfortable pace at home, i followed the whole dvd everyday for a week and noticed an improvement in muscle tone after he first few days, i then did the 15 minute firm up and also varied between one of the other sessions each day for the next couple of weeks and really noticed a difference in my thighs, stomach, bottom, bust and arms. Very pleased with this dvd and itching to use it again to get back into shape after pregnany.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT WORK OUT, UPLIFTING & ENJOYABLE.......2005-06-28

I hadn't done any yoga before and I'm glad that I found this DVD rather than any other as I tend to give up on things easily, so if the DVD had proved to be unusable, that probably would have been the end of my dip into yoga.

As it is I use this DVD every day. Even on the days when I am pushed for time, because it is split into different sections of different lengths. It being a DVD makes it easy to find the section you want of course.

When I first tried it I had trouble keeping up, but after about 5 days I was there, more or less. Don't be fooled into thinking yoga is ALL relaxation, sitting funny and humming (this was my previous impression I'm sorry to say!): it often leaves me puffed out even though the moves are mainly slow. I often have to pause and open windows because I get hot and sweaty!!!

Now, six months after starting it, I find it much easier than at the beginning, but strangely, 'easier' does not mean 'less demanding'.

There is also an 'advanced' section with faster changes between positions and slightly more demanding positions- including some of the same ones as in the main programme but with small changes e.g., feet together not apart, making it more demanding to do.

If you're worried you would get bored by the DVD and add it to a pile of dusty old videos you never watch any more, don't even access this advanced section for several months- I didn't for 5, and then it was like a new DVD all over again.

I've gone from beginner with arthritis who couldn't walk 50 yards without pain in my back to a very supple & toned 'let's not take the car let's walk' fiend. Try it!

4 out of 5 stars great for beginners hoping to progress.......2004-12-11

i recently got this on video and have been very impressed with it. those of you acquainted with barbara's inimitable style will already know whether it is for you or not.

suffice to say, you could do this video with your eyes closed probably since barbara explains everything so thoroughly. i had got a geri halliwell video thinking less chat would be nicer, but for a total beginner (as i am) it really helps to have someone explaining what you're doing. if you can deal with the incessant chatter then it's really helpful until you get used to the asanas.

i have now found after only about a week that i can have some music of my own choice on and turn the sound down, allowing me to follow barbara's movements without all the talk. however, if i am ever getting a bit confused about what's happening i can turn it up and get talked through.

i am really enjoying all the movements and already can see changes in my flexibility and how springy i feel when i get out of bed in the morning....

altogether, if you need to be guided through all the positions with a comprehensive description of what you should be doing, this is for you. it has only lost a star because i realise that some people like yoga to be a quiter, more contemplative activity.

    and remember - "never strain!"

Yogalates - Total Body Toner [2002]

    Amazon.co.uk Review

Louise Solomon's logical blend of pilates and yoga in the original Yogalates was presented as a tool for weight loss aimed at professional women. The Australian expert's second offering Yogalates: Total Body Toner is a curiously--and most definitely welcome--softer approach.

Although billed as a total body toner, the graceful Solomon ensures that this is no pounding quick-fix. Far from glossing over details crucial to both pilates and yoga (namely an understanding of one's anatomy and breathing), Solomon creates a fundamental respect for the body by attaching great importance to detail. It's an attitude which benefits newcomers, without alienating the more advanced. Similarly, seamless editing that cuts to less advanced positions is helpful for beginners without being intrusive to others.

The first three segments work thoroughly through abdominals and waist, upper body, and lower body, in an obvious blend of the two disciplines. The crucial difference for Yoga devotees is that there is more repetitive movement within postures, whilst the Pilates stretches are within a Yoga framework. The fourth all-round programme is more of a straightforward Yoga session, and as a result is perhaps weaker. However, all in all, Solomon's method delivers results. What's more the combination of a white studio and no soundtrack other than Solomon's own voice makes this a rare workable substitute to a real lesson.

On the DVD: Yogalates: Total Body Toner has chapter selection that enables you to choose which part of the body you want to concentrate on, or which combination of programmes you prefer. An additional "Energy Booster" designed for combating stressful days and jetlag is likely to prove enormously useful and highly effective. --Lorna V

    5 out of 5 stars Makes a difference.......2007-12-30

Split into four workouts, that you can pick and choose as you feel like.

Each workout has exercises in that are actually achievable for a regular person, and has little 'extentions' you can do when you start to feel a bit more adventureous.

I do this workout 3/4 times a week. It doesn't take a great deal of effort, and I feel slimmer and more toned because of it. In about a month and a half, I'm definately more toned and I've dropped a dress size.

    Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Yogalates`.......2006-04-25

I found this gem of a DVD and bought it - thinking it would be perfect for me while expecting. It's not intended for pregnant women however! I did the video for as long as I comfortably could. The reason it isn't good for pregnant women is because most of the first three workouts are floorwork/mat-based and that just isn't good for a heavily pregnant woman. You can cut off oxygen supply to the baby, and injure your back.

Some people find that Louise Solomon talks too much - I liked and valued her instructions because with these types of exercise if you are not familiar with things, you can so easily injure yourself.

I also like that she states the beginner's modifications and the modifications for people with neck and back problems. That is a wonderful advantage to her style of teaching. I feel that it shows she knows what she is talking about. As well, her program shows that anyone of any level can exercise! When you follow the video as she recommends, you feel the results immediately AND there is no stiffness or soreness at all. It is a nice relaxing way to exercise and you don't break a sweat!

After the baby was born, I started back a little too soon, and my abdominals were sore so I waited a few more weeks then started it again. It is wonderful. The video is broken down into 4 easy workouts. The first workout targets the abs and pelvic floor muscle groups, the second targets the upper body, while the third targets the lower body. The fourth, which should not be done for at least three months into this program is a total body toner. Each workout is about 15-20 minutes long, and you can do them all together, or one or two at a time, depending on your schedule. A flexible workout that helps you become more flexible.

For this program (dvd) you don't need any equipment (your own body weight is all you really need), except a cushion, a handtowel and a strap (my bathrobe/dressing gown belt fits the bill here) and the strap is only needed for the fourth workout (if you need it to aid your stretching). I have even used just a regular bathtowel as my stretching aid - just to see if that would work and it is just as effective as my bathrobe belt. So again, no need to spend a whole lot of money on things that you have to store. I liked this program so much that I even bought a copy and gave it to a friend, who in turn enjoyed it immensely.

This program works your body out from head to toe and you don't have to jump around, lift heavy weights and risk injuring joints and muscles to get in shape. If you get this video to do after having a baby, wait a few weeks after the birth before starting up the program and if you have had a c-section, follow your doctor's advice to the letter BEFORE doing any sort of exercise program.

5 out of 5 stars Out of shape? Get this DVD!.......2006-03-04

I first got this DVD two years ago when I decided to lead a healthier life. Out with the cigarettes and junk food, and in with the exercise DVD's. The day after my first yogalates workout I was aching all over. But to my surprise, it only took a couple of weeks before I noticed that my back was getting stronger. Although I don't use the DVD now because my fitness is at a much higher level, I would still reccommend it to anyone new to exercise. It really gives you a smooth (and only a little bit painful) introduction to a workout.
With regards to Solomon, I quite liked her encouraging "goooooooood", when I was on my hands and knees and feeling stupidly out of shape!

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2005-12-01

I have tried to tone up for years now, using different videos, gym classes or gym work outs, and this has been the most effective of all. Within a few months, without really changing my diet, I found I was slimmer and more toned. Because you can choose how you want to combine the workouts it's easy to fit into any schedule and it works without straining or sweating! I live in Greece, so anything that makes you sweat in summer is a definite no no! I would advise anyone to buy the DVD but would just suggest that you take time to watch Louise Solomon do the exercises first, before you attempt them, as she can't describe every position in absolute detail. If you feel something isn't working or is wrong, stop the tape/DVD and watch it again. It also helps if a friend (when they stop laughing at the silly positions you are getting yourself into) can look at what you're doing and comment on whether you look the same as the people on the TV screen. Finally, some reviewers have moaned about Louise's voice and the time you have to take to do the breathing. Well, if you are concentrating her voice begins to fade into the background as you become familiar with the exercises and the breathing time is also working your abs - so it's not a waste of time at all!

4 out of 5 stars Yogalates is great for a chilled out workout.......2005-09-07

I bought this video about a year ago, and I used it a few times then but found it a bit boring, so I gave up but I have just started using it again.
I found it a bit tricky to do the breathing and positions correctly but I am persevering with it. I would say if you are willing to persevere with the moves/breathing it would be worthwhile. After last nights exercise my arms and stomach felt like they were definately more toned.
If you like something quite relaxing get this video.

5 out of 5 stars Good, but hard workout.......2007-08-13

I got the dvd this week and have been working my way through. The resistance band does enhance the intensity of the workout and allows you to increase the intensity when you have outgrown your original band by moving to a harder band. I think she is a little quick at times and have needed the pause button to arrange myself in the right position but otherwise is great, especially the focus on different body parts each day to allow the pain to subside in the others! In response to one of the reviewers who felt it wasn't challenging enough, I suspect it isn't aimed at the hardcore gym bunny market, so if you are a daily gym goer I would recommend either doing more than just one of the daily ten minutes per day or finding an alternate toning class (and I think the demostrator is doing more than resistance bands to acheive the serious muscles she has!). It is a lot more challenging and coherent than a lot of DVD exercise tapes, however, and it allows more adjustment to individual levels than average- my mum has tried it and does it without the bands altogether so far.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Quick Workout.......2007-07-12

I purchased this DVD as a short and quick bit of exercise to do in the mornings before i go to work. It really is a complete gem of a DVD workout.

The concept is you do the warm up, 1 section, and a cool down, 5 times a week.

These are the 5 sections (1 for each day) focusing on the different areas of the body

DAY 1 Waist, Back & Stomach
DAY 2 Lower Body & Stomach
DAY 3 Cardiovascular: Legs & Arms
DAY 4 Upper Body & Stomach
      DAY 5 Bum & Legs

I've got a medium fitness level, but you can work to your own level simply by adjusting how you hold the dyna-band, included with the DVD.

You are given instructions on the correct way to hold the band and you are always given full instructions on how to correctly complete each move. If you feel you have progressed enough to find the routines are no longer having an effect you can get a different colour or "harder" resistance band. There are details of how to obtain this in the DVD.

Compared to other exercise DVDs there are no bright flashing lights, no lary music or loud instructors. This is just Katy (the instructor), a white background, quiet music and the dyna band.

After the 2nd day i definitely noticed myself feeling like i had done a workout. And 2 months on i am thoroughly enjoying the routines and feeling the benefits of this simple 10 minute workout. You don't need a lot of room in order to complete the DVD so you really can take it anywhere with you!

Highly recommended as a safe (yes, dynabands are commonly used in physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions) and effective method of exercise.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Beginners through to Expert.......2004-03-17

I bought this as I know the Dyna-Band is used by physio's so I thought it would be both safe and effective. I am a beginner when it comes to resistance work and my boyfriend is a regular runner and footballer. I bought the purple band for him to make it harder! We both really enjoy the workouts, I can feel it working, and he finds it relieves all the strains from football and running - making it the perfect compliment to cardi work. The supposed blandness that a previous reviewer mentions is all the better if, like me, you can't stand beautiful skinny tanned people on a beach somewhere hot on your screen then this is for you. It feels very much like a one-to-one gym class and she always gives tips on how to do it the easy way if you are having trouble coordinating. You can really feel the exercises working as they target all the problem areas. So if you want something that is easy to fit into your day, want to feel results instantly, and don't want someone making you feel stupid because you can't do it - then this is the DVD for you! Buy it - I feel great after only 3 days. And as for the warm up and cool downs, they do what they say on the box!!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth buying!.......2004-03-08

Being quite a lazy so and so, I wanted a workout DVD that wasn't time consuming and that I could follow for just 10 or 20 minutes a day. I hate aerobics with a passion, so a workout that claims to give you the same benefits as a full on exercise routine sounded perfect for me. The Dyna-Band Total Body Workout DVD is brilliant. After just a week I could feel the results - and all I was doing was approx. 15 minutes a day, five times a week! I definitely recommend this workout - it really works.

      1 out of 5 stars Downright odd.......2004-01-24

I was really looking forward to this, as I thought it would help me to work out on those days when my back problem was particularly bad; I have to say, I was wholly disappointed. A presenter of sqeaky-clean Englishness and no charisma, a warm-up of spectacular dullness, ditto cooldown, and five ten-minute sections that you are supposed to complete at the rate of one a day, though the thought of having to get through that warm up FIVE times a week makes me want to eat my dyna-band. I also think it's an odd piece of equipment, and while I know I'm not used to it, I don't think it should have hurt my hands the way it did, nor was I very pleased when I let go of one end and it whipped my leg. Think huge rubber band and you'll get the picture. I'll probably do this on the odd week when I don't feel up to other kinds of strength work, but to be honest the Americans do this kind of piecemeal workout better: check out Tamilee Webb's *I want that body* - against that, this simply looks hilariously awful.

          5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.......2007-04-10

Howard Nappers yoga is excellent, well put together, easy to follow and you feel it really working. My favourites on this dvd are the chillout yoga as it works most areas of the body and the dynamic yoga, which can be a bit of a challenge. Great value for money at over 3 hours of yoga, clear instruction and relaxing music. (...)

          4 out of 5 stars A lovely yoga DVD.......2007-03-07

The best thing about Howard Napper is his soothing, calm voice, which really helps you to relax and feel the positive benefit that you hope to gain from yoga. I tend to use the upper and lower body yoga for the days when I don't have much motivation to do my own yoga practice and could benefit from a bit of inspiration. A great yoga DVD, but not for the purists out there!

          4 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2006-12-18

Excellent DVD. Clear instructions and at a realistic pace. A good workout and a real insight into yoga asanas. The only problem is the way the shots switch from one location to another so quickly. One location, possibly the one with the beautiful blue sea in the background would have made the DVD much more professional. I would also have liked a more structured relaxation session at the end.

3 out of 5 stars Good Workout - Disappointing presentation.......2006-09-04

With about three hours of yoga this sounds good value of money. The exercises are reasonably easy to do but also quite thorough and demanding. The DVD also demonstrates some basic warm-up and warm-down routines which some yoga DVDs miss out. In this case they are more necessary than most because of the relatively high level of exercise.

The big disappointment about the DVD in my opinion is that it is very badly produced. The action jumps quickly between an indoor and outdoor location which is very irritating. I have other yoga DVDs that do similar things but much more effectively. In this case the change in location and also different camera angles are achieved using hard edit cuts (i.e. no video fades). Some of the shots are also overexposed, especially indoors where Mr. Napper's white top sometimes almost dissapears into the background. Mr Napper's commentary is workmanlike but also very monotonous and not very inspirational.

While it can be argued that style shouldn't be before substance, I'd prefer a DVD that makes the experience more enjoyable. I've given it three stars to reflect the quality of the workout though.

5 out of 5 stars good intermediate yoga.......2006-08-27

i have done yoga classes for the last two years and have recently started doing the dvd's due to time constraints and children - this is an excellent dvd - none of it is showing off ie twisting your legs round your neck, but it is straightforward and you can feel it working....highly recommended and especially at this low price great value for money

5 out of 5 stars 5 Star Workout with energy and passion........2007-10-01

          Wow!!!!!!!!!
First of all I can recommend Joanna's DVD workout for everybody from those starting out to those with a good fitness level!!
Never before have I gone so far with the DVD approach of exercising, previously I quickly become bored but not with this workout DVD.
But Joanna is sensational, when I start the workout my mood just rises even if I was down before, it's like have a real trainer in the room with you.
During all courses with her smile, encourage remarks, jokes and positive attitude to everybody which is infectious putting a smile on my face for whole day!

I liked the DVD so much that I sent my best friend in Norway a copy for a present and she is delighted with Joanna's course. She said she is a brilliant trainer and she lost some weight in just the first two weeks of following the DVD. I do this course very easy without pushing myself and persuading myself I do it because I genuinely love it! And Joanna is great woman!

4 out of 5 stars GREAT all rounder!.......2007-04-26

This dvd came free with "health & fitness" magazine in February & I decided to finally try it last week, all 3 sections are very good & only take 30mins so is ideal to do in the morning before work! you can also do the whole thing if you have more time taking 90mins or 2 of the sections taking 60mins. on the whole very good! & Joanna is lovely & really encourages you!

          5 out of 5 stars Great workout.......2007-03-27

I consider myself fit and recently went on a bit of an 'over drive' to really peak my fitness! I'd bought a few fitness DVD's over the years, mostly of which was viewed whilst sat down on the sofa! Have to admit to Joanna being one of a very few that I really enjoy. She has a great personality, and I do find myself smiling at her and nodding (not usually something I engage in!). She is very motivating and what I particularly like is at the end of each section she talks through how to get the best out of it, with general hints and tips..

There are two assistants, one of which shows the 'beginners pace' and the other 'advanced' I now do 75% of the advanced and feel like I'm getting a great workout. If you had the time you could do all 3 workouts, which would take an hour and a half and it would be great but personally I think a high impact approach to any 3 half hour slots is spot on.

The music is ok too and not overly annoying at all - Joanna also has a pleasant voice and explains each move well.

Been doing it for 3 weeks and feel great and will continue to do so.

If you are looking to be motivated, get and stay fit and not be wound up by scantily dressed tanned dancers then this is for you - very worthwhile indeed.

4 out of 5 stars joanna hall rocks.......2007-03-07

I got this DVD free with a magazine I bought. I am relatively fit so I didn't think it would challenge me. I was suprized as it does. The music is specially written for the dvd and is not too bad. The dvd is split into 3 sections of 30 mins each. If you have loads of time you can do all 3 sections and feel like you have had a good work out. I found the last section centred around yoga a bit repetative though. I especially like the bits at the end of each section where Joanna tells us how to get more out of the section. All in all a good fitness DVD and suitable for all levels.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth it!.......2007-03-02

this is the 6th fitness dvd i have bought and it is by far the best and has left the others sitting on my shelf gathering dust. it is broken down into 3x 1/2 hour workouts (cardio, sweat & sculpt and a yoga section) the cardio section is broken down into 10 and 20 minute sections if you are strapped for time so it is very easy to make sure you are doing at least something, and feeling good about sticking to it. I have been doing this dvd 5 times a week for 6 weeks now and it is the longest i have ever stuck at any fitness regime. Joanna is really motivational and makes you feel great! buy it!
