At last!!! A Yoga DVD which gives you a good workout!.......2008-03-03
After continuously reading about the benefits of Yoga I have been searching for a yoga class or DVD that I have enjoyed.
Of the three classes I have tried they all focused on very few poses and a lot of relaxing! As a very hyper person I wanted to take advantage of Yogas muscle building skills and not the relaxing part!!! (I know I should enjoy both!)
Anyway, the couple of DVD I have bought have also been far too slow paced.
Now this one....................thrst time I tried it I was sucked in straight away. It is well explained, easy to follow and a real good workout!!! The next day all of my muscles ached and I haven't felt like that since I started working out 10 yeasr ago.
It is brilliant and I really feel like I have had a brilliant workout. Definitly try it, it is hard going but great!!!!!! 5 STARS!!!
Difficult at first but rewarding.......2008-03-01
As neither a complete beginner or an expert i decided to buy a yoga dvd that i could do at home when i had the time. I read plently of reviews on amazon and this looked like one of the best.
I would definately recommend watching the dvd through first without attempting it to get an idea of what some of the names mean (especially if you are a beginner). This is because the movements are quite fast paced and it is off putting to keep looking up to try and follow what Rodney Yee is doing. This however is not a weak point as after completing the section you feel fully stretched out and relaxed. There are a variety of positions that work your entire body.
The positions are set to relaxing music and can be fairly difficult but with practise they become easier and you become more supple and focused.
dynamic, challenging, engaging.......2008-02-05
This is a great way to get a lot out of a home yoga practice. I practised in the morning for several years and attended a weekly class with a very inspiring teacher until I moved and couldn't find a new class. I got this and found it does the job of a class pretty well if you can't get to one. It starts off gradually waking your body up by slowly coaxing it into sun salutations before adding variations such as extended side angle. Of the four sections, I only use the first and last as I have neither the time nor the strength to do more.
Rodney Yee's directions are pleasantly quiet and clear but they are few which means that this would really not suit a beginner. However, his instructions are very insightful and helpful in the tiny actions of a pose which make it come to life. I finally overcame my difficulties with triangle pose (and it is now one of my favourites) through his guidance which I think is a remarkable feat for a DVD.
This is a very challenging practice but for the guidance you receive and the energy, strength, focus and alignment you develop it is excellent.
A challenge with good results... My favourite!.......2008-01-17
I love this DVD, combines flexiblity/stength/relaxation very well and i don't need to look at the moniter to follow either Rodney Yee explains this very well.
Not for beginners, would need to be of resonable fitness to follow this.
But perfect for those who are bored doing the celebrity dvds with numberous child-pose's.
Great!.......2008-01-08
This is a great Yoga DVD. It is definitely not aimed at beginners but those with a fair amount of yoga experience will find this session easily accessible. Rodney's tuition is clear and precise, and as said above he seems to say the right things that help you into your asanas. You find yourself following his instruction with ease, which is not always the case with Yoga DVDs. It allows you to develop your practice, you definitely feel that you are pushing yourself physically during the session whilst the calming voice of Rodney and the beautiful setting in which he practices settles the mind. Highly recommended!

Fantastic.......2008-03-12
This is brilliant. I've been doing the exercise sequences on this DVD for 8 weeks now and I can really see the difference. My arms are more defined, stomach is toned and legs are so much stronger. Aside from that Yoga really does de-stress and make you feel good. The exercises are progressive so you don't get bored but at the same time you can start as a beginner, as I did, and work your way up. I reckon that you need to use it 3 times a week to see the results. I even bought my mum a copy for mother's day and she rates it too!
Currie makes yoga enjoyable yet challanging.......2007-06-09
I have tried yoga now and again, but could never really get rid of the feeling that it was boring. Since I liked the idea of combining strength and flexibility, and even meditation, I kept coming back to it though. I'm glad I did. I have been following Power Packed Yoga a couple of times per week for a little more than a month now, and this is actually a dvd that I long for (I also follow some other workout dvd:s). Currie usually repeats a position two times, so while she doesn't let you off the hook - you have to work it - it never becomes boring. She is also not afraid to introduce challanging poses, but always offer an option for beginners. While I follow the dvd I have - fun. And afterwards I just feel great; relaxed and at peace. And yes, I feel it in the legs the day after.
The dvd countains four programs, one morning engergizer, one with focus on balancing postures, one with focus on stretching, and a relaxing and calming sequence. It totals about 1½ hours.
more aerobics than yoga........2006-12-19
Not a yoga practice. Currie's voice is strident and her manner irritataing. Her postures are difficut to follow and not clearly explained. Im not sure what she is trying to achieve.
Mixed messages.......2006-05-09
I have very mixed feelings about this DVD and have concluded that she didn't really think through what her core messages were when deciding the format. It tries to be all things to all people and I'm not sure it succeeds... I'm a fit (ardent runner)but horrendously stiff and un-limber 46 year old, who trains with her lithe whippersnapper 13 year old daughter. This didn't really cater to either of our needs. Despite pacing myself and doing the exercises in the beginners' format as recommended, I have a really stiff and sore back and neck this morning. I have never experienced this when doing Louise Solomon's yogalates workouts. My daughter found the pace much more to her liking, but still found it really frustrating that Currie admonishes us to go at our own pace, not over-do it, be sensible etc etc and then smugly twists herself into a passable iimitation of spaghetti junction and grins smugly into the camera. I think she thinks it will inspire us to keep going so that we will one day be able to achieve this pose, but it doesn't. All it does is make her look like a show-off and beginners like me feel as if I have bought the wrong DVD - ie. one aimed at really advanced yoga practitioners - which I may one day be, but not for many years. Seeing somebody really, really advanced isn't inspirational, it's a bit demoralising and also slighly frightening for someone like me who has had spinal surgery and still has slight confidence issues with trusting my body to work again. Some of the pose sequences are also ridiculously fast. On the plus side, there isn't any nauseatring music and the exercises are very well explained, but Currie needs to get back in touch mentally with what it feels like to be a complete beginner.
a great dvd.......2006-01-28
This dvd is great! Barabara Currie really expains the yoga moves very well, even for a beginner like me. I've had this dvd about a year now and i still use this dvd till this day. I have also just bought this dvd for my mam for xmas and my mam rates it high.
This yoga dvd is good if your going on holiday in the sun and you need toning up, and if your like me slightly over weight and diets dont work for you then this dvd is for you. After about 4 to 5 sessions a week for 6 weeks you'll see your body shape trim down, toned up and your posture improve and you feel more confident. I've seen the results for my self.
Other yoga dvds I would recommend are 'Geri Body Yoga', Barbara Curries 'Seven Secrets Of Yoga' and the Barbara Curries 'Total Body Plan' but not the Barbara Curries 'Power Yoga'.

Only for the advanced!.......2007-08-20
I read the review of this and thought a yoga workout that incorporates some of the more advanced positions would be a good challenge. Thankfully I studied yoga some years ago or I don't know how I would have gotten through this!
First of all, there is little to no instruction on how to properly get into the poses. The sun salutations are completed at a very quick pace which doesn't allow you to get into the pose fully before moving on. And, the pilates section (ab workout) is incredibly short.
I like this DVD for the advanced positions (full back bending, side plank pose, eagle pose, etc.), but think I'll stick to my other yoga DVDs!
intense but good .......2007-01-03
I love this DVD it's a really strong workout and the great thing about it is that it caters for all levels in it, but be aware from the start that this has some very challenging poses in it and the pace is pretty relentless as well. If your looking for a more intense yoga workout that is well thought out and has some postures that you don't often get in a lot of yoga DVDs then this is for you. Highly recommended.

emotionless.......2008-02-23
I found this DVD quite dissappointing and as a result I have not used it.
One of the things I love about gaiam dvds is the loving and caring way in which the yogis show you how to get the best out of the asanas chosen.
Sadly this one is very "hum drum".
There is no interview with Rodney Yee - something which I would usually watch beforehand to get me into the spirit of yoga. Also he seems to just get on with it in a very machanical sort of way. -Shame, but I have others.
Extremely short.......2007-11-08
I was very disappointed when I received this video to discover that the workout on it is only 25 minutes long. As I understand, this DVD and the strength and flexibility ones are all just very short sessions made to accompany each other. These would be much better presented together in one DVD - rather than charging £9.99 for each separately. I notice that for Region 1 there is a 'strength and flexibility' DVD that combines two of the three, unfortunately not available to people in the UK without a multi-region player.
Also, I got this DVD hoping that it could deepen my practice and challenge my flexibility as someone who has practised for a long time. Unfortunately again, the box and review do not point out that this DVD is part of a 'Power Yoga for Beginners' series (only mentioned in the DVD menu page). Although I do not think this would be appropriate for beginners - he moves to through the postures too quickly, as if he is really trying to squeeze them into the 25 minutes - there is also very little included here that is not in the complete workout in the Total Body DVD - one that I would recommend much more.
The only way this DVD will be useful is for people who have very little time available and need to fit in a very quick yoga session. It's just a pity that is not made clear on the box or review, and a greater pity that they did not combine the three short sessions into one DVD.

Terrible DVD.......2008-03-12
Barabara Currie is fantastic at tutoring Yoga. I purchased this DVD however and the production quality is terrible - this is certainly the worst purchase I have ever made from Amazon. Aside from the quality of the DVD, the flow of exercises is extremely poor and very difficult to get into. If you want to buy a Barbara Currie yoga DVD, pick Power Packed Yoga for a professionally produced DVD with excellent exercise combinations.

Rodney Yee one of the best.......2007-11-01
I have been into yoga for about 5 years now and practise 4-5 times per week in a yoga room in the house I live in, in Spain. Rodney Yees instruction is second to none, you do not need to look at the monitor just listen to his voice which is soothing yet motivating. This dvd is fab, really hard work for 30 minutes, not for a beginner though. I have all of Rodneys dvds and they are all super, I am working on completing all his moves in his advanced class which as yet not managed but maybe in a couple of years I may. These dvds coupled with David Swenson primary series are the ones that should be bought for all yoga enthusiasts.

great results.......2005-12-30
WOW!!! everyone noticed when i was doing this workout.
I can honestly say that I thouroughly enjoyed this workout, especially the compliments. It was only about 2 weeks before I noticed a difference in my body shape and tone. Good luck to anyone who trys this.
Excellent.......2005-12-06
Having read good reviews of this I bought it and I am so happy I have got it. Is really excellent, I only wish it had a few more sequences...never mind next time. I really hope that Anton Simmha releases another DVD soon.
Many thanks
This could be what you are looking for.......2005-08-23
I bought this DVD after having practiced Pilates for the last six months. Power yoga is an natural partner to Pilates, and Penny Smith's DVD is simple to follow, with step by step instructions and explanations. One very good innovation is that the commentary is a few seconds behind Penny, so when you look at the screen you can see what you should be doing next.
A well thought out programme, a good basic exercise which should suit anyone with a reasonable level of fitness
Good basic ashtanga.......2005-04-21
Good basic ashtanga - not advanced, but a great workout nonetheless. Anton explains the positions well, and the pace is strenuous but not a killer, building flexibility and muscle strength with ease. I combine it with the Pump It Up workout (weird combination, I know) and they complement each other brilliantly because even though I feel fantastic when I do yoga, it just doesn't ever feel like it makes me lose weight, which Pump It Up does.
Accessible Ashtanga.......2004-02-02
This is an easy version of the Ashtanga First Series, removing many of the later postures in Ashtanga which are more suited to circus acrobats than home yoga practitioners. Ashtanga always follows the same sequence, there is no day-to-day variation, and Penny's version does the same.
Unless you are familiar with Iyengar or Hatha yoga postures, you will find it difficult to keep up, particularly with the second set of Sun Salutations(Surya Namaskar B) which are performed at the same rate as Ashtanga Series 1 which is quite fast(but only three of them instead of 5).
Not a beginners video, but accessible Ashtanga. I use this routine regularly(I also use the Geri Body Sun Salutations which are a good warm up too.) Thanks Penny.
