Jennifer Garner glows like a rising star in 13 Going on 30, a girly version of the Tom Hanks classic Big. Jenna (Garner, Alias, Daredevil), a frustrated teenage girl, just wants to skip past all those annoying adolescent years and arrive at a glamorous adulthood--and thanks to some inexplicable wishing dust, she does. But once she re-orients herself to a life as a high-end magazine editor with a sports-star boyfriend, she discovers that in the 17 years she skipped she became a not-so-nice person, including casting aside her best friend Matt (played as an adult by Mark Ruffalo, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). There's no question that Jenna will rediscover her lost innocence, but Garner rises above the lack of suspense. 13 Going on 30 floats along, buoyed by her goofy sweetness. Her lovely looks are made accessible by her unfettered silliness; it's a winning combination. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars A surprisingly delightful, feel-good comedy.......2005-02-01

I was rather pleasantly surprised by this film. Obviously, the storyline is by no means unique, and I've seen too many films featuring kids and adults miraculously switching places to feel all that confident about going once more into a similar breach, but 13 Going on 30 is actually, well, delightful. I'm a big Jennifer Garner fan going all the way back to her role in the short-lived Time of Your Life; by and large, I think she did a wonderful job in this role. It is certainly a different Jennifer Garner than we see on Alias, and it certainly appears as if she relished a role in which she got to be silly and whimsical. I would have to credit Mark Ruffalo with an even more impressive performance, though, as his was the subtle glue that held the fantastical elements of the plot together.

Young Jenna has just turned 13; already unhappy with the way she looks and anxious to be popular, she suffers an embarrassing indignation which has her fervently wishing to be 30. Thanks to some wishing dust on the model dream home her obviously infatuated by "not cool" friend Matt built for her, she gets her wish. I thought the early scenes featuring 13-year-old Jenna reacting to the instant passing of 17 years and adjusting to her new, uh, accessories was a little awkward, and a certain lack of continuity in regard to her reactions to new stimuli popped up sporadically as the film progressed. One minute she's acting like a young teenager, and then she will suddenly seem to have grown up into her new age to a significant degree. Anyway, she discovers that all of her dreams have come true: she was popular, and she has become mighty successful in life - actually sitting atop the fashion magazine she was addicted to as a kid. Before long, though, she begins to see that having it all isn't all it is cracked up to be. This grown-up body she inhabits is actually a rather empty shell of a not so nice person. She learns that she has done some rather nasty things over the course of the missing 17 years. The only person she can turn to is her friend Matt (Mark Ruffalo), but the two have gone in very different directions over the years. In the process of trying to save her magazine, Jenna learns that the dreams of childhood don't turn out the way you thought they would and other obvious life lessons, etc., etc. You can probably guess what happens at the end.

The film does succeed rather well as a comedy; the Thriller dance scene, while uncomfortable to watch, is indeed quite silly, and some of adult Jenna's interactions with young teens also play well. I also loved the fact that the movie helped take me back to the 1980s, to some degree. There are some classic 80s tunes on the soundtrack, and beginning the film with the sound of the Go-Go's definitely qualifies for a star in my book. That being said, I have to say that I don't remember some of the awful hair-dos of the film actually existing in the late 80s - certainly not among the girls my eyes gravitated toward in those halcyon days of youth.

In the end, this is basically your silly, entertaining, feel-good comedy, and it stars one of Hollywood's most attractive, talented actresses. It doesn't try to be anything more than what it is, and that is a big reason why it works as well as it does. It is by no means a must-see, but I do believe it is a film you cannot help but enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars very good!.......2004-12-30

i was excited when i heard of the new jennifer garner film 13 going on 30 earlier this year. the moment it cam out i grabbed my two best friends and dragged them down to the local cinema to watch it. i must admit i was slighly disappointed by it, sure its a great film with a great plot, i dont no what it was but something was missing. but apart from that it was a brilliant movie i would recomend it to anyone who like a chikflik film with laughter, love and sadness.

5 out of 5 stars BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR..........2004-09-13

This is an absolutely charming and delightful comedy with an excellent cast. Do not, however, see this film unless you are ready to suspend disbelief. After all, the premise of this film is that a distressed thirteen year old girl suddenly finds herself propelled into the future and into the body of her thirty year old self.

Jenna Rink is a typical teenager, a little gawky, a little insecure. She pals around with her uncool best friend, Matt Flamhaff, but, at the same time, is trying to make it into the cool six chicks clique at her school, a nasty little group of teenage hotties who use Jenna for what they can get from her. They agree to come to her thirteenth birthday party, if she will do a class report for their leader. She agrees.

Matt is the first guest to arrive, and he gives her a little, doll sized dream house that he has made for her, replete with magic dust. When the other guests arrive, they soon depart with the needed report in hand, after playing a very mean trick on Jenna and leaving her desolate. A set of circumstances causes the magic dust to fall upon Jenna, just as she makes a wish that finds hers transported into the future and into the body of her thirty year old self.

Jenna discovers that she now has every thing for which she had dreamed when she was thirteen. She also discovers how she has changed, and it is not a change for the better. She turns to Matt, whose friendship, she is shocked to find, has been lost somewhere along the way. Jenna then sets about putting to right what went wrong. Of course, there are any number of humorous incidents that arise out Jenna's current situation.

Jennifer Garner is sensational as a thirteen year old girl trapped in the body of a thirty year old woman. She infuses the role with just the right amount of innocence and joyous abandonment that teenagers often exude. Kittenish and coltish all at once, her charm is infectious. Mark Ruffalo is perfectly cast as the grown-up Matt. He exudes sensitivity and niceness, all rolled into one very compelling package. One cannot help but like both characters tremendously.

This is an entertaining film for those who enjoy light-hearted fantasy films. This film has been compared to the film, "Big", and while there are some similarities between the two, this film stands on its own two feet and deserves its own accolades. Deft direction by Gary Winnick and excellent performances by the entire cast make this film a comedic gem to be enjoyed by those who like a charmingly realized film.

5 out of 5 stars 13 going on 30.......2004-08-23

This film was hilariously funny in some psrts and really touching in others. I would definately recommend it to people that want to buy it. i will be first in queue at the shop to buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Funny And Well Conceived.......2004-08-21

At first sight, this looks like a teenage girl fantasy movie and the first fifteen minutes seem to be just that. However, once Jenna (Jennifer Garner) gets her wish (it's a silly fairy dust scene) to become thirty, Garner manages to pull off a thirteen year-old as a successful businesswoman as well as Tom Hanks did in "Big". She is truly funny at discovering how her life has turned out. Finding out that she and her friends are not the nice people she thought, Jenna tries to save her famous fashion magazine from folding and save the boyfriend she neglected as a teen (Mark Ruffalo as Matt). Garner really pulls out all she has and glows in this funny, heartfelt and human comedy. Not being one for this genre, I was very surprised at how well conceived the entire film was. The entire family will go for this one.

    3 out of 5 stars disappointing remake.......2007-06-07

This version is nothing compaired to the original, visually lacking in atmosphere,as it was filmed in Australia, rather than on a Pacific island. Some of the original versions scenes were shot in the Hawaiian islands and the lighting and scenery is superior.
The military equipment and scenes are authentic looking and of interest.
To be fair the singing is very good,if you like that, which I don't,I wish both versions were non-musicals,I always find it very distracting somehow.
Glenn Close is a fine actor but was totally miscast in this, she looked too old and butch with very short hair,I picked up from the behind-the scenes movie that came with this dvd that Glenn Close always wanted to play this part and is in fact a co-producer.Thats whats wrong, she was totally unsuitable for this role, its a pity no-one told her!If a younger more attractive actor could have been used,it would have been a great improvement overall.I would not watch it again, but I do watch the original from time to time for its visual beauty and atmosphere,I even put up with the singing!that says it all.

4 out of 5 stars Both versions have their say.......2007-01-17

I like both versions of this great musical. The earlier one I equate with the stage musical, having more to say musically, but with less punch in the anti-racist message (though it is there, of course); The later version gets closer to James Mitchener's original anti-racial message given in "Tales of the South Pacific", on which the musical is based. I also think it has a fresher, South Seas ambience to it. There is more military realism, too. One wouldn't expect the earlier version to be surpassed, musically; therefore I don't find the later version disappointing, rather a most enjoyable contrast. And the music is still very good....

5 out of 5 stars the newer the version, the better........2004-07-16

South Pacific (2001) is far the best version out of all of them.
This one has more laughter in it.The acting is more enthusiastic. Also the singing is superb.
My favourite character is 'Bloody Mary'. She has me in stitches. Her character is so enjoyable and she has such a happy face.
Glenn Close really show cases her vocals in this. They are phenomenal. Also bringing harry connick jnr into the picture is great. He has such a jazzy frank sinatra voice. And he looks pretty hot.
This film is a gotta have movie! It will have you in tears at one moment and stomache ache because of laughter at the next.
I think that this film can be watched by any age and anyone would enjoy it. It has everything from comedy to war!
This may sound a bit wierd but it's nice for just a chill out night with ya boyfriend or girlfriend. Snuggled up on the couch, a blanket, very close, chinese and a nice bottle of wine!
BUT THIS IS NO FILM 4 A GIRLY PAMPER NIGHT IN, NOOOOOOO WAYYYY!
So anyone whoes interested i'm positive that you'll love it.
Don't lisen 2 what that other person from the UK had to say.
They don't have a clue what there talking about.
So trust me on this you've gotta have THIS VERSION.

2 out of 5 stars A pale shadow of one of the greatest American musicals.......2004-02-20

I was very much looking forward to seeing a new version of perhaps R&H's greatest work. The 1958 version is not without its faults - for example the excessive use of colour filters can be distracting. Nevertheless Logan's film as a whole is magnificently produced, looks beautiful, and well captures the mood of James Mitchener's original- snatched moments of happiness under pinned by nostalgia, war and loss. It is well cast and well sung ( Juanita Hall as Bloody Mary was a member of the original Broadway cast and the rest are well up to standard although de Becque and Cable were dubbed by others).
Sadly the new version is far from the equal of the earlier film, still less a replacement. It is generally poorly sung. De Becque's songs were written specifically for an operatic bass- "Some Enchanted Evening" arguably the greatest single song in American musicals would still benefit I believe from being performed as the composer intended ,and not palely crooned.Even Harry Connick (Joe Cable) who at least looks the part doesn't quite capture the transcendent joy of "Younger than Springtime" but then his Liat lacks the transfixing beauty and innocence of France Nuyen in the earlier film. But the greatest and fatal weakness is the casting of Glenn Close as Nellie. She is undoubtedly a fine actor including musical theatre (as for example in Sunset Boulevard)but she was badly advised here. She is frankly and obviously far too old for the part thus making a nonsense of chunks of the dialogue and plot and much too experienced and knowing to be the naive "little hick" from Little Rock!
This screen portrayal of South Pacific looks and feels very much like the economy version but it is no bargain. Look elsewhere for the music. There are several excellent versions on CD including the 1949 Broadway cast led by Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin, and the 1958 film soundtrack as well as more complete modern recordings which all do the superb score full credit. As a film there is still only one viable version even if it is more than 45 years old. Joshua Logan, all is forgiven!

I have seen this film twice on Cartoon Network with my son aged 5 and we have both enjoyed it immensely. The computer graphics are amazing and, bearing in mind this is a children's film, the storyline is very appealing. Glad to see it coming out on DVD.

    4 out of 5 stars Pinocchio 3000.......2005-01-14

I saw this film on the plane back from Canada and thought the CGI animation was fantastic. My little boy was enthralled for the whole hour and a half and has since been asking on a daily basis to see it again!

As a piece of computer Generated animation, it is superb. The quality floods through at every level - just admire the way they do hair, or liquids, or shadows, or reflections, or the subtlety of the backgrounds, or the depth of the 3-dimensional feel. The images are sharp, the colour ablaze with life, the movement and emotion beautifully captured. It is a magnificent invitation to explore a futuristic world, and you are instantly caught up and carried away.

1 out of 5 stars Good looking but poor storyline........2004-12-27

Futuristic remake of the Pinocchio story.
Good looking movie but with such a weak storyline even young children will fall asleep. It isn't such a bad thing if you want to put your three year old to sleep. The comic relief are not even worth mentionning. Better get back to Disney's classic or wait for the new Blue Sky movie, Robots.
