Like a Gay Sunset Beach meets Amitiville .......2008-01-20
This is soooo hammy! But I loved it. Reasonably good sets, attractive people (although they have overdone the baby oil a little) The plot has potential to do lots of things provided they get a good writer. If you liked Sunset Beach you will love this. Loses a star because this 'Complete Series' is only two episodes.
Note - don't watch with your Granny!
good, but short.......2008-01-15
By naming this a series the makers are giving a bit of misrepresentation, this 'series' only has 2 episodes. It's good, but I was more than a bit hacked of when I opened the box and there was only one disc, and then even more when the disc loaded and there were only two episodes and the 'special features' consists of four trailers for TLA Releasing Movies and a few stills; no deleted scenes, no interviews with the cast/crew, not even subtitles. If I had known what I was getting I might not have bought it. I just hope season two is either longer and more heavy with special features or a lot cheaper
Totally Guilty Pleasure.......2006-12-26
I'm laughing at myself giving this 5 stars because basically it's total nonsense with dodgy acting and a ludicrous plot. BUT (and this is a very big but) it is totally engrossing entertainment if you're totally starved for good gay viewing. I've watched pretty much every gay movie ever made and this series has renewed my faith that you can have beautiful men in utterly romantic situations with happy endings. The men in this series are amazingly beautiful. They love each other and the romance is spine-tingling. Add to that they get their kit off at every available opportunity (it's filmed in the Caribbean, so they're pretty much semi-naked the whole time) and make love... on the beach, by candlelight, in romantic hotel rooms. Are you getting why I give it 5 stars now?
Some of the casting must have been done whilst drunk (or high). I've never seen a 53 year old play an 18 year old before (Tracy Soggins) and believe me, it DOES NOT WORK.
Not all the cast are gay, apparently, but straight or gay, they throw themselves into the gorgeous kisses and wonderful love-making.
With the supernatural theme, this is pretty much Buffy or Angel slashed. If I could give it 10 stars, therefore, I would. S2 isn't out on DVD yet, but I'll be signing up for it as soon as I can....
Loud and noisy and sort of superfluous.. .......2006-10-07
In 1840 the small seaside town of Dante's Cove was awash in strange goings on. Grace Neville (Traci Scoggins) is about to be married to a young Ambrosius (William Gregory Lee). Although she's getting on in years, Grace is now sure she's finally met the man that she wants to settle down with. Is Ambrosius, however, really all that he appears or does he just want Grace for her money?
Dante's Cove gravitates between the jaw-dropping awful and ludicrous guilty fun. There have been a lot of B-grade actresses over the past few years that seem to be making a career out of appearing in low budget gay material - Jill St. John, Jacqueline Bisset, and Morgan Fairchild, but now Traci Scoggins can add herself to the list. Although she's by far the best actor in this series, her performance still vacillates between mostly watch-able to appallingly trite and melodramatic.
Most of the male cast don't fair much better, babbling their lines until the next nude scenes which aren't really that sexy or even that titillating. Although done on the cheap, the series looks mostly well made - perhaps with a bit more money they could get a better scriptwriter and employ better visual effects. The cast is very attractive of course both in the nude and fully clothed. In the end, this is trashy television at it's best, truly awful but also quite compelling, Mike Leonard October 06.
