One of my all time favorite movies.......2008-02-06
This film has it all what it takes to make a really great movie. It is well done, an impressive cast, deep emotions, drama, deep friendship, laughter and never in a tacky, unrealistic way. One can relate to these characters very easily. The switch between past and present works great. I was hooked from the very first moment. I share the previous reviewer's view that one can see it several times and not getting bored rather seeing different aspect of this excellent movie more clearly. This is "toowanda"... see the movie and you will understand what it means. For now 5 stars would actually not enough to give to this movie. Just see it!!! You really must!!
movie you can watch again and again.......2007-08-22
This is a womens film has all the things we woman love best love, comedy, drama what a beautiful film put together so well and has you glued to your seat at all times, one to pass onto your daughter, best friends, mother. I have watched this film at least 10 times over the 3 years i have had it, buy this film you will enjoy every moment.

Kathy Bates stars as an unhappy wife trying to get her husband's attention in this amusing and moving 1991 screen adaptation of Fannie Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. After befriending a lonely old woman (Jessica Tandy), Bates hears the story of a lifelong friendship between two other women (Mary Stuary Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker, seen in flashback) who once ran a cafe in town against many personal odds. The tale inspires Bates to take further command over her life, and there director Jon Avnet (Up Close and Personal), in his first feature, has fun with the film. Bates develops a real attitude toward her thickheaded spouse at home and some uppity girls in a parking lot, but dignity is generally the key to Avnet's approach with the story's crucial relationships. Tandy is a joy and clearly loves the element of mystery attached to her character, and Masterson and Parker are excellent in the historical sequences. --Tom Keogh

Sweet, gentle tear-jerker.......2007-10-03
No matter how many times I watch this film, the charm of it's excessive sentimentality never fails to draw me in. This film is engaging and warm-hearted, bringing us into the life of Evelyn, a gentle and good-natured Southern woman who is going through the menopause, played by Kathy Bates. After going with her husband to a local retirement home to visit one of his relatives, Evelyn meets and befriends an elderly woman named Mrs. Threadgoode, played by Jessica Tandy.
The way in which the film seamlessly flits between past and present is admirable. After befriending each other, the two woman share the details of their lives, and Evelyn learns of the stories of Mrs. Threadgoode's various family members, from long ago, in a tiny little town called 'Whistle Stop'.
The past sequences are full of beautiful characterisation, lovely Southern locations and plenty of tear-inducing moments, if you're that way inclined. The way Mrs. Threadgoode describes the unwavering friendship between two of her relatives, Idgie and Ruth, and the various twists and turns of their lives, is at all times engaging, sometimes funny and sometimes sad. Throughout, however, this film is a sucker for sentimentality, but what prevents this from falling into pure American schmaltz is the high quality of both Jessica Tandy and Kathy Bates' acting, which is impeccable throughout.
Whether it's the mid-life crisis of Evelyn, who seeks to turn her life and her dull marriage around, or the truly moving friendship and loyalty between Ruth and Idgie, this film is never anything short of engaging. There are no dull moments, but plenty of saddening and humourous ones, which all contribute towards making this a classic tear-jerker. Allow yourself to cry at this sweetest of films.
ultimate version.......2007-02-27
we are in the UK still waiting for this version to be released years later. This USA version includes behind the scenes and interviews with the cast and director, this is the ultimate extra to a fantastic film. I am sad the relationships have been toned down, but this was like the colour purple, I can only hope a specially director's version will come out in years to come.
minimal extension.......2005-11-09
Fried Green Tomatoes is a great film, most of us already know this, just as we know that the only thing it lacks is for the romantic relationship between Idgy and Ruth to be realised on screen. Do not expect this from the extended version, the only hint of mysterious deleted scenes is at the end of a special feature documentary; while the credits roll - Ruth and Idgy are lying on a blanket (during their honey excursion). I'm surprised it didn't make the cut of the extended version. However, the documentary is good and the extended scenes, in the film, add a little more depth to the emotional ties between the characters.

Fried Green Tomatoes is an excellent feel good movie with wonderful performances by Jessica Tandy, and Kathy Bates, highly recommended.
completely unexpected.......2004-03-16
i had heard from some friends that i really should read a book called ' fried green tomatoes', and as im lazy i bought the dvd.
i know it's wrong to judge a book by it's cover. and i saw the cover and though 'oh no'
But i was dumb-founded. I didnt expect the story line to go along as i did at all. The Twists in the story line. The Death of a closely loved brother. The abusive Husband, all intertwinded well with one another.
i found it funny, touching, and heartbreaking.
i definatly recomend this film

A tale of two friendships, one which existed several decades ago and another in the present day. Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) is a middle aged woman who has seen a son off to college and now finds herself trying to get her husbands attention again. One day while visiting a relative in a home she meets Mrs Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy) who begins to tell her the story of two old friends, Ruth and Idgie. Evelyn's visits become a regular occurrence as Mrs Threadgoode continues her story and the two women become good friends which helps Evelyn come to terms with her life and mid-life crisis.
At the same time we are treated to the story of Ruth and Idgie. Ruth has been asked by Idgie's mother to help tame her wild daughter and the pair form a strong bond which gets tested several times over the years by racism, an abusive husband and illness.
This is a beautiful movie about the wonders friendship. I've watched it many times and still love it. Several `laugh out loud' moments but also those which will bring a tear to your eye no matter how many times you watch it.
A must see for everyone.

This film takes a while to get going but it is worthwhile waiting. It takes as its story a remininsce of the past history of the cafe as retold to a lady visiting at the nursing home.
Fried Green Tomatoes - yes please!.......2006-02-20
The raint day when you have a cold, feel a bit tired, stay off work and can't face the housework - snuck down on the sofa with some home made popcorn, a big mug of hot chocolate, a fluffy duvet and Fried Green Tomatoes.
Kathy Bates plays a housewife in a rut who befriends an older lady, Idgie. Idgie takes Evelyn back into her past, portraying a beautiful story of female friendship and a dark secret. Meanwhile downtrodden Evelyn throws of the shackles of her daily grind to blossom into an assertive, happier woman, and we can scream with laughter at her journey (the parking space!)
And it has a good ending.
Girl power. Girl film Yay!
A best friend of a film.......2006-01-14
Fried green tomatoes is one of those return again and again to films,the more you watch it the more you like it.It tells the story of an old friendship within the story of the start of a new friendship. The acting is superb,the storyline poignant . It will touch your heart and also make you smile.
