Beyond Expectations, Warm and Dark emotional Drama.......2007-08-17

I had no expectations when it came to Napola and usually I don't write reviews, however after spending an afternoon watching this beautiful piece of cinema I can't help but suggest this film, it is one of the best films depicting the time of the German Reign and ideology.

A remarkable drama that at moments are certain to distress viewers which only adds to the brilliant story.

Without saying much more, if you like foreign films this is certainly to make an impact.

A must see..................2007-06-09

As said in the previous reviews, this is a truly well made film and is well worth a viewing. The cast act their socks off and give a great performance and the story is quite gripping and remains so untill the end. Give it a go, you wont be dissapointed.

An Interesting Side Trip of the 2nd WW.......2006-10-27

Rising star Max Riemelt goes from strength to strength with his appearance in this film about a relatively unknown aspect of the Nazi regime, namely its reconstructing and discipling of the minds of teenagers destined to be future super troopers - or not as is the case for two of the cadets. The film explores the relationships between the cadets, and with their military teachers, and the perception of all of their roles in the Nazi juggernaut that unbeknown to them will ultimately falter, dragging down all and sundry into the ignominious but necessary end. The performances are strong, the scenic backdrop enhancing, and the technicalities underpin the film perfectly. It can be ranked as a worthy companion of the excellent film, Downfall.

Confronting Nazi Germany's schools of indoctrination........2006-09-10

17 year old boxing prodigy, Friedrich, leaves behind his family life to train at an elite NaPolA (Nazi Academy for youth), seeing it as his great chance for success. Through a meeting with the pacifist Albrecht, son of a Gauleiter, he gradually comes to see the school for what it really is: A grand youth indoctrination program to create the SS elite.

This is a fabulous film, well directed, acted and beautifully shot. It is another example of a young German filmmaker (Denis Gansel), attempting to confront the dark past of the Hitler era. Where Napola excels is it's portrayal of a seductive, honourable and masculine world, which attracts the impressionable young men to become elite fascists, unquestionably loyal to the Fuhrer, and that any who think outside the box, will quickly be weeded out and removed.

"Napola" serves as a fantastic partner to the film "Der Untergang" (Downfall), as another uniquely German perspective on the rise and fall of Nazism in Europe.
