I saw this movie in the theaters when it was originally released, and I've always been very fond of it: it was the first movie I'd seen that didn't make all the gay characters camp (as much as I liked Cage aux Folles..) but instead just showed ordinary people coping with difficult situations. The synopsis isn't quite right: the key character is Michael, who is simultaneously losing both his live-in lover (Robert) and his most trusted friend and former lover (Nick), the first to an overseas promotion and the second to AIDS. It's well acted and poignant, and if nothing else it has, in I think their earliest movie roles, the always interesting Steve Buscemi and Kathy Kinney as a kind, earth motherly artist light years removed from the role that's made her famous, Mimi on the Drew Carey Show.

Decent watchable film. Good humour and well acted........2006-11-13

Some good acting involved here. Easy going film, nothing too exciting but has good humour along the way. A bit confusing trying to follow some main storyline but it's a typical 80's gay decade story as depicted in the review. One guy wants to break away from his 5 year relationship and take time out, friends gather for a leaving party for him. I liked the party atmosphere and 'camp' humour along the way. Everyone looking for someone! Jimmy Sommerville background music popping up appropriatley. Not a sleeze movie but some good lookers in there! Well worth a watch but don't pay too much for it.

Parting Glances is one of my favourite ever gay films and all the more special because it is one of the first to tackle AIDS in a responsible and honest manner. Set as a day in the life of a gay couple in New York who are about to split up because one is moving with his job it involves a whole constellation of gay and lesbian characters and culminates in a farewell party. The thing that struck me most when I watched it first was that although many of the characters are recognisable gay types - none is a stereotype. And Steve Buscemi is very impressive in his first film role as a young new romantic/punk star dying of AIDS. In a roll call of gay films down the years this would have to be far and away my favourite.

Only a pity that the DVD is available in just Region 1

A truly touching and beautiful film.......2003-07-26

I first saw this film when I was about 14 and at the time I was just awakening to the reality of my sexuality. This film I watched over and over again for years to come because at the time it was the only thing I could identify with. It is touching because of the relationships within the bizarre love triangle which end up causing a certain amount of friction and confusion aswell as an element of discovery for one of the characters.

The main high light of the film comes from the fact that it is a product of 80's downtown New York and the nostalgia and elements generated from this era are colourful, memorable and stunning. Set within 24 hours it portays the Breaking up of a relationship and the effect of Aids and the music and drugs on the scene at the time.

It is quite a simple film but one that has been overlooked somewhat. Everyone should see this film because it is both charming and entertaining and may even make you cry.
