Very watchable.......2007-10-17
The film is well acted with an interesting and unusual storyline in respect of the lives of two American black gay men and the complicated lives of the family they become involved with. An interesting twist at the end. A very enjoyable film which I was happy to watch twice.
Amazon.co.uk Review
It's not surprising that My Big Fat Greek Wedding grew more popular over the course of its US theatrical release (whereas most blockbusters open big and then drop precipitously)--not only does it have believable situations and engaging characters, but these characters (particularly our romantic heroine Toula, played by writer/performer Nia Vardalos) look like actual human beings instead of plastic movie stars. The result is the very accessible tale of a Greek-American (whose family sees her as over the hill at 30), who falls for a WASPy guy named Ian (John Corbett) and then has to endure the outrage, doubt, and ultimate acceptance of her deeply ethnically-centred family. The actors invest their wildly stereotypical portrayals with sincerity and compassion, giving the movie honest warmth instead of Hollywood schmaltz. But My Big Fat Greek Wedding ultimately succeeds because of Vardalos; with her intelligent, down-to-earth presence and charm carrying the film. --Bret Fetzer

It's not just the Greeks.......2007-08-10
A delightful romantic comedy based on culture clashes. Toula's huge sprawling noisy Greek family are initially aghast that she has fallen for a "xeno", the ultra-Anglo Ian. Ian's family are probably just as aghast but are too uptight to get emotional. Will their relationship overcome the obstacles so that they can get maried and live happily ever after? Of course it will. But there are lots of laughs on the way, and not just at Greek family life and culture. Fun is poked in many directions and never maliciously.
I watched this film with a group of friends from a Middle Eastern country far from Greece, some of whom were almost hysterical with laughter at the way they were spotting their own relatives, and their own attitudes, in Toula's Greek kin. Culture transcends nationality. This isn't just a movie about Greeks and WASPs in Chicago, it's about human beings. And it's very enjoyable.
Overrated but sweet none the less.......2007-08-07
I was expecting more from a film tipped to be the funniest of 2002, but it was nice to watch on a dark and cold evening.
A dowdy greek woman has a SHOCK HORROR makeover to ensnare the man of her dreams. Dad's a bit cross as he's not greek, but they have a lovely big greek wedding anyway. Yup, that's it in a nutshell. However, it is sweet and reasonably funny at times.
Rent it rather then buy it, but it is worth a watch.
My Small Fat Review.......2007-07-05
This movie is about an ordinary rather plain looking thirty something unmarried woman who comes from a large extended Greek family. All Greek women are expected to go to Greek school, find a good Greek man, marry him and have lots of Greek babies according to the narrator who is also the main character in the movie. This simple premise is what sets us off in almost two hours of raucous humor centered around planning a wedding where a couple coming from completely different backgrounds has to deal with all the external pressures that happen when two people decide to go down the aisle together.
A similar film that can came out in the same time was 'Monsoon Wedding' where the characters are Indian.Watch both of them as a double bill; A Big Fat Experience
Another recipe from the American Melting Pot.......2006-10-08
"America the melting pot" is a worn out cliche, but its tiresomeness doesn't detract from the fact that MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is an amusing and appealing tale of the process in action.
Nia Vardalos wrote the play on which this film version is based, in which she stars as Toula Portokalos, the 30 year old unmarried daughter of restaurateur Gus Portokalos (Michael Constantine). Toula is a frumpy, bespectacled "seating hostess" in her father's Chicago establishment. Though the life cycle of a Greek girl is to marry a Greek boy, have lots of Greek kids, and spend her life feeding an extended Greek family, Gus is beginning to doubt Toula's ability to pull this off - particularly the first bit. Realizing she doesn't have a life, Toula connives with her mother Maria (Lainie Kazan) to land a job in her aunt's travel agency. Now, out in the real world - with the help of a cosmetic and fashion makeover - she meets and falls in love with high school teacher Ian Miller (John Corbett). Ian is decidedly not Greek. He's the only son of affluent, coldly reserved, WASP parents. The film's comedic plot revolves around the awkwardness resulting from the collision of two very different cultures during the course of Ian and Toula's BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING. For example, when the elder Millers pull up in front of the Portokalos house for an initial get-acquainted get-together, they're appalled to see the entire Portokalos clan - Toula has 27 first cousins - roasting an animal carcass in the front yard. Did I mention that the Millers are vegetarians?
I never felt the same affinity and sympathy for Gus and his family as I did for Lalit Verma and his family in MONSOON WEDDING, a splendid Indian film that is driven more by character development than by comic situations. Perhaps it was also because Lalit was coping with some very real predicaments, while Gus's problems are of his own mind's making. However, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING still works because the people seem very real. Toula and Ian are attractive in a reasonable, but not intimidating, way. (This isn't a cutely tousled Meg Ryan meets a handsomely charming Tom Hanks soap opera.) Ms. Kazan is terrific as the "family neck" which can turn the obstinate "family head" (Gus) in any way that she pleases. Both movies stress the value of large-family relationships, something long forgotten by the miniscule, Nuclear Age American families of WASP heritage that strive for independence from tribal obligations.
Oh, and I have to believe the makers of Windex forked over some big bucks to support this film's production. Otherwise, who would've brought to our attention this stuff's amazing properties?
My Big Fat Greek Wedding: AMAZING!.......2006-02-13
My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a charming film about a less than perfect, everyday women(called Toula Portokalos played by Nia Vardalos) who is surrounded by the new youth and mordern city of Chicargo, America. But her VERY Greek family try to hide her away from it all.as quoted in the film by toulas father costas " there are two types of people in this world, Greeks and everybody else who wishes they were Greek!" Toula falls in love with an non-greek. strictly off limits in the world of the portokalos family! As well as being a romantic film its also a very funny comedy! usualy picking out all the outragous antics of the greek youngsters. Its a happyily ever after film ...or is it? i only wish there was a sequal!

A funny comedy with a heart.......2007-10-06
Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson show us in this film that they are a great comedy team. That play a pair of long time friends who are close and have the same strange vacation.... the Crash Weddings.
The movie sets us up with a montage of how they crash these weddings. And we see that not only do they have a great time, free food & drinks and always get their woman...but also they do it in such a way that you do not hate them. They seem to be the reason the wedding is so much fun. And you know that you would want them to crash your wedding. I think we are also shown this to see that they have developed a formula that they have found to be very successful.
Everything changes when they add one more wedding they did not plan for. A wedding of a daughter of a very powerful Washington, D.C. political family. The move in with their formula, but then things starts to go wrong and they start breaking their own rules. And they start to get really involved in the lives of the girls they are chasing and their family.
The movie is very funny, but has moments that are tender. Almost turning into a Romantic Comedy, but right before that happens, we get pulled back into the comedy and it breaks the moment. Though you know it was there. It is as if the first half of the movie was written as a pure comedy and then the last half the writers wanted to show character development and slip into a Romantic Comedy. It still works, but if they had gone for one genre it would have been much better. Still worth watching
Top comedy.......2007-10-04
Seen it loads of times and it's always as funny. Really hits the mark. If you like Adam Sandler, Ben Still, Owen Wilson, etc style comedies then I would recommend this to you. Slightly juvenile humour but very light hearted and watchable.
Hillarious comedy! .......2007-08-25
I went to the cinema to watch this the first time around and most of the cinema were in tears with laughing. The story's pretty basic - 2 guys crash weddings to pull girls. They have a set time limit and other crazy rules until... at a wedding one of them falls in love. Its a posh wedding and thats when the fun starts. The sisters are crazy, the brothers even worst (possibly the funniest bit in the film) and ah as you'd expect it has a happy ending. I love this film and its definitely worth a watch if not buying! It's on my dvd shelf and its there to stay!
Not that good..........2006-02-14
Well at the beginning it seemed like it was about to get funny.
But i thought it was silly, it wont go on my shelf or anywhere else for that matter, waste of money!
