    Amazon.co.uk Review

Holes is a scrupulously faithful adaptation of Louis Sachar's book Holes and should delight the book's fans. After being wrongly found guilty of stealing a pair of sneakers, Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) gets sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile correctional facility in the bed of a long-gone dry Texas lake. There--under the watchful eye of overseer Mr Sir (a zesty Jon Voight), sneakily mean therapist Dr Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson), and the cool and cruel Warden (Sigourney Weaver)--Stanley and dozens of other delinquents are forced to dig an endless series of holes that the warden hopes will lead her to a precious secret left behind by a long-dead female outlaw (Patricia Arquette). Sachar's book is beloved for its vivid characters and suspenseful plot; by sticking close to its source, Holes has become a dynamic, exciting and surprisingly touching movie. --Bret Fetzer

    5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2008-02-29

Didn't know what to expect which was probably a blessing as on paper I wouldn't have chosen it. Watched it with my 7 year old and was surprised that he followed the story as I thought it was quite complicated for someone of that age. Just goes to show what I know and that children are capable of more than we adults give them credit for! He enjoyed it so much that he watched it again the following day and the day after that! It came out of it's case again at Christmas for a group of boys and everyone of them loved it. From an adult perspective I thought it was great, not your predictable children's fodder that you can have a nap half way through and not miss anything. This is a clever, well acted film particularly for boys.

3 out of 5 stars Good but no cigar.......2007-07-23

I liked the film on it`s own, as it is quite well made except for some of the crew appesring in some shots, and reverse sceens. It`s good on it`s own, but after reading holes I had mixed feelings. Indeed it is very very similar in storyline, which is one of the things I gnjoyed most about it, But the charecters contrast like black and white: In the book, for example, the main charectar [Stanley] is said to be fat. In the movie he is lanky, and so on! Still, a very enjoyable one for the kiddies!

    5 out of 5 stars A Brill Movie.......2007-05-12

I read the book of Hole's at school and my teacher said if you got the movie you would understand every thing more. I got the Movie and put it on and soon all my family came in! They loved it, it's a great family film and I would tell you to buy it and see what you think.

Treasure Planet [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

    Amazon.co.uk Review

Treasure Planet, a pet project of Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Hercules codirectors Ron Clements and John Musker, is an ambitious animation hybrid (traditional animation combined with elaborate CGI backgrounds). It was the subject of numerous in-studio battles, but Disney office politics and a poor public reception shouldn't distract one from its many admirable qualities, not the least being its overall fidelity to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Treasure Island. Curiously revamped as a sci-fi adventure with space-faring galleons, flintlock ray guns and extreme-sports attitude, it caters to a young audience for whom Stevenson's adventure is an undiscovered treasure, revving up the material with arcade-game excitements. It's entertaining, for what it is, and kids will surely enjoy it. Maybe next time, however, Disney will follow its own legacy and properly adapt Stevenson (as they did with their 1950 live-action classic) for a new, and hopefully receptive, generation. --Jeff Shannon

    4 out of 5 stars A novel idea.......2005-03-22

It must have seemed like a good idea on paper. Take a much loved childrens classic like "Treasure Island" and update it with a good splash of "Star Wars." Get the same guys that produced previous hits like "Aladdin" and "The Little Mermaid" and surely the result will be a winner.
    Well in a word, no.
I went into the latest Walt Disney animated movie "Treasure Planet" really wanting to love it. I grew up just an hour away from Edinburgh and many times passed the island in the center of that city which, the tourist brochures tell us, served as an inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island".
The mesh of classic literature and science fiction does occasionally create a magical moment when you are left saying to yourself "wow, now that was cool," but during too many instances in that movie theater I found myself wondering what I should pick up for dinner or, more telling, what this movie could have been, should have been.
It's novel to have the space ships in this production based on the design of the galleons that cruised the seas during Stevenson's time, complete with sails to capture the suns energy rather than the wind. It was interesting to see the character of Long John Silver turned into a cyborg with a shape shifter on his shoulder instead of a parrot.
The rogues galley of aliens and a robot that owes more than a casual nod to C-3PO also add color to this production, but it really is a mixed bag.
The story is so well known that it seems almost unnecessary to produce here. Young, adventurous and impetuous Jim Hawkins dreams of escaping the dreary life he leads and sailing the open sea, errr, I mean space. Then one night he rescues a dying traveler who has on his person a treasure map. Following his dreams he embarks on an adventure across the universe in search of untold wealth.
This movie may be fun for the kids - which I guess was the target audience for this production, but adults would be better served throwing the newly remastered DVD of "Bambi" into the DVD player.

5 out of 5 stars Am I gushing about this movie? You bet I am!.......2005-02-18

Young Jim Hawkins (voice by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) grew up reading about pirates, and dreaming of finding the fabulous lost treasure of Captain Flint, the greatest pirate ever. When a dying sailor gives Jim a special "map", Jim and family friend Doctor Doppler (David Hyde Pierce) set off to find it. But, the crew of their ship looks more than a little bit untrustworthy, and none of them more so than the cook, John Silver (Brian Murray). Sailing through mind-blowing dangers, Jim encounters more adventures than he could ever have imagined, and finds a treasure more valuable than gold.

I must admit that I did not see this movie in the theatre; I was that sure that it was going to be a bad movie. Well, I am kicking myself now! This movie is great! The combination of eighteenth century pirates and technology was handled masterfully, and it produces an exciting and visually breathtaking movie! Am I gushing about this movie? You bet I am! This is a great movie that you and your children will all love. (My kids thought that Morph was the best part of the whole movie.) Get it!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2004-12-06

A "Must see" adventure film, filled with spectacular action sequences. Another instant classic by disney. It has a different plot than regular disney movies. After watching "Treasure Planet", a question does arise in our minds i.e."What is our place in the universe?"

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2004-10-18

I cant belive some of the comments above, I loved this film! My son who is 7 rented it from the video shop and I have to admit that I thought it would be rubbish, but I enjoyed this far more than "A Bug Life". I thought the story line was great and the animation wonderful. Highly recommended!!

2 out of 5 stars Can't match the success of Lilo and Stitch.......2004-03-07

I found this film to be a grave disappointment and a major let-down in Disney's cannon, with it resulting in utter failure at the box office. The film does have some good parts, but really it's just for the impressive animation and fantastic soundtrack. The storyline is well recycled, but poorly turned into a film on the big screen, the characters and film were mainly dull and uninteresting, and the voices were uneven and wooden. In the end the final result is a mediocre film that only gets 2 stars for the animation and the soundtrack, though the amount of songs is slight. Disappointing. Just can't compare to the amazing Lilo and Stitch. Or its equally brilliant sequel.

        5 out of 5 stars A**hole ? I think not !.......2003-12-24

Kinky Friedman is one of Country musics' great overlooked. He enjoyed a brief but glorious musical career in the mid '70s and has since gone on to pen some of the finest cult detective novels that I have read.

Widely misunderstood when touring, the 'Kinkstah' prides himself on being a Texas Jewboy ! This video tells the story of a fascinating, multitalented, amusing and sensitive genius. In addition to the biographical documentary, vintage live Friedman footage is included. All his 'hits' are here so fans will love it.

I'm not sure about the uninitiated, its worth a shot though. Just remember how firmly his tongue is planted in his cheek and then get better aquainted. I guarantee that you won't regret it.

I had the good fortune to see Mr Friedman live in Leicester this summer. He was superb, witty and very affable after the gig. Even though he signed my poster - 'See you in hell' ! You really do have to be on his wavelength. There is a very thin line between genius and madness after all !

An added bonus, for me, is that unlike most of my favourite country artists the Kinkstah is still ALIVE !!!!
