28 Weeks Later [2007]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Put that cynical look away, because the critics were right. 28 Weeks Later really is a sequel that delivers, that expands on the original, and in many ways even surpasses it.

Faithful in many ways to the enjoyable, if derivative, 28 Days Later, this sequel sees original director Danny Boyle (who went off to make Sunshine instead) replaced by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo behind the camera(director of the excellent Spanish film Intacto). And Fresnadillo is an inspired choice, putting together a film that's not bereft of flaws of its own, but one that proves to be an ambitious and surprisingly thought-provoking follow-up.

Many of the building blocks are the same. Primarily set over six months after the Rage virus engulfed Britain, turning many of its inhabitants into deadly zombie-esque creatures in the process, the film this time though sees the American military arrive to help sort things out. Only things quickly go wrong, allowing Fresnadillo to mould a pacey, exciting and desperately enjoyable action carnival, that's got a little more under the surface.

Grounded by Robert Carlyle as one of the survivors of the virus, replete with his kids in tow, 28 Weeks Later skilfully navigates the labyrinth of sequel hell and really, really delivers. What's more, it opens up the enticing possibility of a further sequel, and on the evidence of this film, that's a very welcome thought.

28 Weeks Later, like its predecessor, isn't a film for the faint-hearted, and wholesome family entertainment it absolutely isn't. But it's a very good, energetic horror movie, and far, far better than you might've originally given it credit for. --Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars This is my favourite zombie film. .......2008-03-14

Clever and absorbing directing and photography with respectful nods to other great scary films interwoven into the plot whilst maintaining originality. Good mix of characters. Keeps you guessing and hoping balanced by a sense of driving inevitable doom. I still keep watching it. This is a perfect sequal to the great 28 days later. I was surprised it didn't get better reviews in the press. Sorry if this sounds a bit too wordy but I hope I have managed to convey something of the flavour of this gem of a film.

4 out of 5 stars Great film.......2008-03-05

I really enjoyed this. Put aside the ridiculous concept of a virus that takes over the host in 20 seconds and you have a very scary idea for a horror movie. Unlike other zombie films the infected are very fast and strong, which makes it all the more terrifying as they pursue their victims tirelesly and relentlesly. One question I have though - what happened to Scarlet toward the end of the film? One moment she was knocking someone out with her rifle, the next - as far as I could see - we are just down to the 2 kids. To me it is an improvement on the original as it feels like things are happening on a bigger scale. One little error I did spot was that when the kids are going through the grave yard there appear to be fresh flowers on one of the graves. Who would have put these there 28 weeks after the outbreak of the virus?

1 out of 5 stars What I thought of this film?.......2008-02-26

When i first heard that a sequel to 28 weeks later was coming out. i was made up. I must say i was extremely disappointed through out the whole film. It was very predicable. Very Naff and just extremely stupied and if i had to pick a favourtie bit i would say the credits. 28 days later was much better. I was actually wanting the characters to get attacked as all of them where so annoying. Oh and another thing to wick me off There was no proper containment plan or any proper way to kill them off. it was poorly written and if i could give it less i would say 0 stars. dont buy it. rent it and see what a dissapointment it is.

but thats just my opinion

3 out of 5 stars It does what it says on the tin.......2008-02-25

The movie begins with the introduction of a handful of people hiding out from the infected. After a short time, the house is attacked and most of the group killed by the zombie-like masses. Robert Carlyle and his wife are separated and he escapes leaving her to her fate.

Next, the US military descend on the UK with the plan of repopulating London and thereby set up a `safe zone'. Carlyle's 2 children are reunited with their father - their father just happens to have complete access to everything about the compound they're living on. Day 1 back in Blighty and the kids easily slip out of the safe zone and head back to get some things from their former home.

Upon returning home, the children discover that their mother somehow (which is never revealed) survived the attack and has been living in the house for the past few months. The military arrive at the house and take the children and their mother back to the "safe zone". The mother is a carrier of the disease who shows no symptoms of infection and is therefore a precious commodity as she may contain the secrets to a cure. When Robert Carlyle hears his wife is still alive he goes to visit her. Predictably the wife infects Carlyle....he kills the wife and then sets off on his mission to infect everyone in the `safe zone'.

From here on in the film spirals into your basic "zombie chase". Robert Carlyle emerges as a logical zombie if such a thing exists as his sole purpose is to track down and kill his children. Then again this movie was never meant to be believable now was it.

Ultimately this is your usual zombie movie with lots of blood and gore but even for me there was a bit too much gore. I'm not squeamish but I had to turn away at this movie more than once. But if you enjoyed 28 days later then you probably won't be worried about the gore in 28wks later!

In summation.....it does what it says on the tin.

3 out of 5 stars Stronger Than The Original.......2008-02-22

This is a well made, intelligent sequel. London is being repopulated with British survivors and the country has been cleared of infection.....or has it! Moral issues are dealt with here - especially when things go to "code red". The film is well written and acted. There's a good soundtrack to boot.

However, you do feel quite depressed watching this feel - it's certainly not a feel good movie! But for this genre of film it does a good job. And in many ways it's probably a better film than the original.

3 out of 5 stars 28 weeks later.......2007-12-31

ok but not as good as 28 days later.

A bit too predictable

4 out of 5 stars Great picture, good film.......2007-12-11

I had read some bad reviews about this film. One of the main criticisms is that Danny Boyle did not direct the sequal. However, fans of the first film will not be disappointed. There is plently of action and the film is never dull.

The film follows Robert Carlyle's cowardly escape from an attack of the infected. He leaves his wife stranded and saves his own life. Eventually, he is forced to confront what he has done and pays the ultimate price.

The sub plot is essentially that London is under the control of American armed forces who are culling the infected and have created a safe zone in London's Docklands. Predictably, another outbreak occurs and all hell breaks loose. Cue music from first film!

Again, there are some eerie scenes of a desolate London inspired by the first film. The blue ray quality is superb and adds to the impact of this fast paced action horror. Perhaps most original is the use of a helicopter to eviscerate the infected hoards!

Anybody who enjoyed the first film or is a fan of zombie type movies will almost certainly enjoy this sequal.
