Save Our Souls!.......2008-03-11
This is a pretty good horror film which keeps the tension going throughout. The only flaw for me was that the massacre on the ship in 1962 was only partly elucidated, though the motives were clear enough. Pretty bloody, the film does not stint on horrific detail. As for the performances, the little girl's performance is great and sensitive and the 1962 cabaret singer is, well, fantasy material lol! What can I say?!
A salvage crew go out after a thirty-years-abandoned ocean liner is spotted floating in the Bering Sea. They find a lot more than they bargained for. That, in essence, is the plot. But it is well done.
A film well worth about one and a half hours of your time any rainy evening.
it's behind you.......2008-01-16
this is a creepy ghostly film and that's exactly what i love but it just didn't grab me like some other films do. I love the idea of a ghost girl trying to help humans still alive on earth find the secret of the ship etc but still there was something about it that i wasn't keen on, i would recomend you watch it, but don't buy it, rent it so you can give it back soon after!!
Creepy thriller.......2007-11-20
I really enjoyed this film, there may have been similar films made before it but I haven't seen them so that didn't affect my movie experience.
An intriguing plot with a twist at the end, some gorey moments but the film builds suspense very well......
PRETTY CREEPY.......2007-11-02
Years after the disappearance of a mysterious cruise-ship, undersea salvager Sean Murphy, (Gabriel Byrne) hears of it and sets off with his crew, Maureen Epps, (Julianna Margulies) Dodge, (Ron Eldard) Jack Ferriman, (Desmond Harrington) Greer, (Isaiah Washington) Santos, (Alex Dimitriades) and Munder, (Karl Urban) to find it. Going aboard, they find the ship empty and decide to tug it back in the morning. There, they discover some problems with the ship before they can bring it in, and decide to fix it on the spot. While fixing it, the group is beset by ghostly apparitions that appear intent on scaring them away from a horde of stolen gold on board the ship.
The Good News: I wasn't expecting a whole lot going into this one. It surprised me a lot more than I thought it would. Most of that was due to the spectacular design of the interior of the ship that is perfectly built to generate suspense. This is one of the creepiest sets I think I've ever seen, and it creates an unbelievable atmosphere. It's eerie corridors, large empty rooms, and the general darkness of the surroundings combine into a really nicely-realized setting. The ambiance of the ship is best part of the film, and it does a brilliant job of setting it up to deliver the shocks coming later along. There a large amount o those kinds of scenes spread throughout, keeping you constantly on end about whether or not there is something there. Most of the tricks to generate suspense are used as well, from the rapidly closing rows of doors, creepy noises off-screen, to sequences where the characters shouldn't be doing what they are doing in the situation. None of the sequences are worth spoiling, so they won't be revealed. It is just a really creepy film with loads of suspense. The story of how the ship came to be haunted and the special twist associated with it is pretty nice to see, as it doesn't resort to a traditional story in any sense. It's a nice change. The biggest surprise, of course, is the spectacular opening that sets the mood for the film perfectly. It's nice and quite bloody, which is the perfect combination.
The Bad News: There wasn't much wrong with this one. Once it hit the hour mark, it slowed down pretty much and changed ti's pacing. It wasn't a bad shift, but still one that's noticeable. Its not enough to diminish the entertainment factor, but it's still there.
The Final Verdict: Had it kept on the pace it was going, it would've been a great film, but the shift makes it slip a little into just being a really great one. It's creepy, its fast, and it keeps you entertained, if only for the slight shift. Very recommended.
FAILS TO DELIVER.......2007-10-26
Pretty good cast and the budget was obviously quite good with the special effects etc.
The story, however, was just a bit lame. I did enjoy the film but just needed something to kick it along.
Amazon.co.uk Review
You won't need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, even if you haven't experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There's a galleon's worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp's androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor's daughter). They set out on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he's made Pirates of the Caribbean into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. --Jeff Shannon

The only one that I enjoyed, or that made sense.......2007-11-06
This is such an enjoyable movie, it's a pity that the ones after it were so bad. However, I must say I did not watch this movie expecting to really enjoy it, but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a funny, and highly enjoyable movie, and I really enjoyed watching.
The plot:Elizabeth Swan met William Turner when she was a kid, and he was a dying pirate boy. He was wearing a black pearl, which she took off him. Years later, Elizabeth ( Keira Knightley ) is an adult. The black pearl that she took off Will Turner ( Orlando Bloom ) turns out to be more important than she could have expected, when she is abducted by a group of pirates, who want to get it back. Captain Jack Sparrow ( Johnny Depp ) eventually comes into the story when he is escaping from prison.
The great humour and good plot will make most people enjoy this movie, even people ( who like myself ) don't normally like movies with pirates, I highly recommend this movie, but I recommend you stop there because the ones after this are just awful, plotless, and a lot less funny attempts at getting the filming crew loads of money.
The best film in the world!!!.......2007-05-29
I have to say, this is my most favourite film of all time! The acting is excellent, the CGI is fantastic, and, the storyline is just incredible!!!
This has to be the best film Gore Verbinski has directed in his whole career, as he used some imagination, and turned a simple idea of pirates kidnapping the govenors daughter, into the pirates being cursed as well!!
This film has everything you want in a action movie. It has fights, humour, and, main of all, Capt. Jack Sparrow. He's such a ledgend!!
Overall, this film is just brilliant, and, you MUST buy it today, otherwise you'll get a curse yourself, for not buying the best film ever made in motion picture history!!!
Yo Ho Ho A Pirates Life For Me.......2006-10-16
"Pirates of the Carribean" is very simply, one of the finest action films to reach the cinema this decade. Gore Verbinski (Director of the film) leads a great pack of actors which includes the underrated Johnny Depp playing the infamous pirate Jack Sparrow, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner the young Craftsman turned hero, the blosseming Keira Knightley as the governor's daughter & a very good performance by Geoffrey Rush as Capitan Barbosa doesnt hurt the cast much either...
This film is not stop fun, the action is very apperent throughout and the same can be said about the comedy. I was 100% involved for the entire 143 minutes that it was playing. Johnny Depp's performance is astounding and should have been more seriously considered for the best actor award at the Oscars ... but I really dont think that it is Jack's Charactor is not the only thing that made the film so good. The collection of all of the witty comedy, non-stop suspense & action as well as some stunning special effects is what made the film so great. The film had great direction, a clever script and about as good of a cast as it could have hoped for ...
Gore Verbinski is one director that I think deserves a little bit more credit. He made a very funny film in "Mouse Hunt", a very creepy movie in "The Ring" and an all around good job in the film at hand ...
"Pirates of the Carribean" will go down in history as being one of the great summer hits, the same can be said about Johnny Depp's wonderful performance playing Jack Sparrow..
The second film is good but not as good as this one, though it is still very much entertaning ... the next few should be a blast, I cant wait!

What a magical film! Fantastic effects and CGI and a wonderful cast. I was glued to my seat watching this movie and have watched it time and time again. Cpt. Barbosa and his crew are amazing and when they show them selves as skeletons under the moonlight - that is one of the best scenes in the film. Johnny Depp as Cpt. Jack Sparrow is quality. The way he portray's his character is superb and pulls it off a treat!
Can't say enough good things about this film!! Well done Disney!!

A huge disappointment.......2008-02-25
Of all the hundreds of DVD's I have purchased I have never felt so dissappointed to go online and post my thoughts.
This documentary is a rambling wreck of a film in it's own right. I'm sure there must have been many hours of good film footage taken in the making of this film. However, the way it is presented with multiple picture-in-picture style (sometimes with as many as 6, 7 or even 8 images on screen) makes it almost impossible to see in any detail what your actually supposed to be looking at. Allowances have to be made for the fact that is was shot for Imax presentation where I'm sure the clarity of the huge screen made all the difference. On even a large home screen however the imagery is cramped and confusing. Almost everything of any interest is reduced to mini postage stamp montages.
And then there is the inane commentary that is absurdly thin on historical fact and big on exclamations like 'wow, look at the size of that', 'thats huge' and, well - you get my drift. You wouldn't have thought that they actually had historians along for the ride but they hardly get a word in. So annoying was Bill Paxton's bland commentary, it actually makes better viewing with the sound off.
In all a wasted opportunity. I really really wanted to like this, to be amazed and dazzled by it. And in there, somewhere the footage is there to amaze. I just wisth it had been put together by someone other than James Cameron and Bill Paxton.
BEWARE - Region 2 not the same as Region 1.......2007-12-08
Beware - All the previous reviews are those of region 1. Region 2 has a lot less extras than region 1. The actual feature is certainly worth watching though there could be more footage of the interiors of the wreck. I understand that the extended version available only on region 1 has unseen footage of the interiors of the wreck. I find it ridiculous that we in Europe should be deprived of the real deal. The extended version alone would make this DVD more worth buying - hence the 3 stars.
In memory.......2006-10-10
I found it strange when i watched it that this is down as a Disney film, but it is an amazing film, with great shots of the Titanic today. It was made during the 9/11 attacks, and it brought the crew to a halt while they grieved, then they realised that we all have seen a disater live. Anyway this film has outstanding CGI showing the events of Titanic. I would have liked to have seen more shots of the ship, but that doesnt cause any problems for me.
There were some extras including featurettes and trailers.
Ghosts Of The Abyss (2003).......2005-03-18
brilliant film would advise anyone to get this film the footage at the bottom of the sea where they found the titanic is just unbelieveable and some of the items that are still visable inside the ship are just execellant.
Just watch it to see the craftmans ship still intacked after all those years under water.
A Titanic Tribute!.......2004-05-09
Director James Cameron does everything on a mammoth scale. After viewing this DVD, I wish I had seen the 3-D version. This is an exhaustive search of the remains of the Titanic. The inner portions of the ship are explored with two mini robots and the two submersibles with the director, actor Bill Paxton and the crew members aboard. This is at over 2.5 miles deep. Paxton adds some human humor/drama with the crew, but the real star is the ship. Starting from the stormy surface waters to the calm, eerie depths of the North Atlantic, Cameron leaves nothing out. There are still glasses and plates peacefully resting where they were left on that fateful night. Brass beds lay intact. Particular rooms of celebrity passengers are found with items left as they were. This is miraculous, as the ship spun wildly around in its' decent, spewing debris everywhere. Stained glass is still intact everywhere and the robot lights cast magical colors and shadows throughout. Cameron puts everything in perspective by frequently superimposing transparent actors dressed in period clothes strolling the deck. These "ghosts" add true scale to the Titanic.
The 90-minute version adds more information about the sea-life existing around the Titanic with comments from Dr. Lori Johnston. More of the Captain's personal life is explored as well as life aboard the state of the art research vessel. The 'making of' feature, "Reflections of the Deep" is interesting and includes some more information, but not a great deal more insight. "The ROV Experience" is more for the technically minded, but fun to experience. For extras, not much beats this collection, but glorious excess is what James Cameron is all about and he does justice to the Titanic.
Footnote: Towards the completion of the exploration, the crew heard about the attacks of 9/11. This was an all too eerie coincidence considering the massive tragedy of the Titanic that had been waiting decades to be explored
