Land of the Dead (2005)

Amazon.co.uk Review

Bolstered by the success of 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, the Resident Evil movies and the hit remake of his own Dawn of the Dead, George A. Romero returns to the horror subgenre he invented with Land of the Dead. The fourth installment in Romero's zombie cycle (and the first since 1985's Day of the Dead) presents a logical progression of events since 1968's horror classic Night of the Living Dead: Zombies (also known as "stenches" for their rotting odor) are the dominant population, and they've begun to show signs of undead intelligence and gathering power. The wealthiest survivors live comfortably in a luxury high-rise within a barricaded safe zone, ignoring the horrors of the outside world while armed scavengers stage raids in the zombie-zone to gather much-needed food and supplies. Simon Baker and John Leguizamo play mercenaries-for-hire; Dennis Hopper is their nefarious boss; and horror favorite Asia Argento (daughter of Suspiria director Dario Argento) plays a former hooker recruited into Baker's scavenger squad. While none of this seems particularly fresh or inspired, Land of the Dead benefits from hints of the social satire that made Romero's earlier zombie films so memorable. Not so much funny as gruesomely peculiar, Romero's plot isn't as inventive as it could've been, but as a big-scale B-movie, Land of the Dead delivers a handful of shocks and horror-celebrity cameos (including gore-masters Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero) that should keep horror buffs happy until the next zombie opus comes along. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars Another classic from the king of schlock........2007-10-31

So, it looks like Hollywood threw a load of cash at George A. Romero.

It also looks like George A. Romero stuck to what he does best. Naffness. Extremely intelligent, ironic, naffness.

First of all, if you're looking for frights and shocks, look elsewhere. The effects are unconvincing, the zombies are walking comedy and the acting wooden. But this is the whole point of George's movies. His works are one long montage of cliches, based around deeply ironic scripts that reflect human fears, often political and then turn them on their heads.

This is a director that solely owns his own horror genre. Others have tried to imitate and emulate and have failed. He may just be one of the cleverest directors around. Roll on the next sequel. I hope its as naff as this one.

4 out of 5 stars Preety good!.......2007-03-08

Being a fan of the zombie genre (yes, even resident evil!) the promising return of the grandfather of the flesh eating hordes George A Romero was a welcome relief!

It is unbelievably gory in moments, but is presented almost with a tongue in cheek sense of fun at these times. Yet beneath this exterior, there is clearly some really strong themes that Romero is seeking to address.

Zombification can stand for disease, capitalism (dog-eat-dog, or rather human-eat-human!) or moral decay or many other things, or maybe the director is wanting to explore the notion of a doomed scoiety in light of climate change and its consequences.

One of the strongest images of the film is when a zombie looks toward the horizon and sees the skyscraper and is drawn to it. It is this sense of aspiration that gives the zombies almost a sense of humanity. This is a similar notion to Fritz Lang's Metropolis, where the working lower class rise up against the rich. The glimpses of intelligence, such as when the zombies use a gun or tool has an almost touching child-like quality to them, almost as if the zombies were a load of rampaging toddlers!!

I guess this intelligence suggests an evolution and that maybe the zombies are the new caveman and will evolve back into man over the years.

Anyway, more practical matters such as building a PROPER WALL to keep zombies out would have been a plan, possibly. Fencing just don't seem to cut it, and frankly you'd expect more from a load of military types that run the perimeter. I guess this is showing that the survivors are a bit blase about the encroaching threat.

The acting from Dennis Hopper is as good as ever, giving a real maniacal edge to his character. The other leads are preety strong too. All round, its an entertaining film that is definately worth a watch!

Regarding the ending, I don't want to give the game away, but I very much doubt that there's gonna be a sequel!

Anyways, i've rambled on enough. Give it a look!

3 out of 5 stars The lack of credibility doesn't stop it from being quite enjoyable.......2006-07-06

Land of the Dead is a zombie film more about the longer-term aftermath of a worldwide zombie apocalypse. The film itself is set 3 years after the outbreak, in zombie-free Manhattan, where most of the city is run by one man, Kaufman. All non-bourgeois people live in the slums, while all the rich live up in skyscrapers. This anti-capitalist theme continues throughout the film -- make of it what you will.

I think that the base of the storyline itself made it hard for Romero to produce something really believable. The story with the zombies is that they are learning to think. You see alot of one zombie, whom I shall calll "zombie genius". He shows compassion and rage when he sees fellow zombies killed; he knows that barriers can be broken down with use of weapons; he even learns to shoot rifles (albeit not very well). However, the scenes of compassion for fallen comrades that you have seen so many times in action thrillers simply doesn't work in zombies; compassion just doesn't go that well with brutally murdering and eating innocent people. So it was hard to make this film credible from the start.

The believability is not helped by some ridiculous violence that should have been left out; for example, a zombie grabs someone by their hair and rips their head out of their shoulders. Two zombies grab an arm by opposite fingers and tear it down the middle. A zombie grabs someone's upper lip and pulls their face off. This does not do the film any favours.

Even so, the film is quite enjoyable to watch. There are no big moments where you will jump with fright, but the sustained sense of doom and disaster is well implemented, and causes long-term suspense. The one true piece of idiocy comes from the lead character, right at the end of the film; watching the zombies leave Manhattan, he says: "They're just like us; looking for a place to go." After witnessing the zombies massacre and eat hundreds of innocent civilians who were still alive. Well, the filme was ridiculous, but quite enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars WELCOME BACK GEORGE - YOU'VE BEEN AWAY TOO LONG.......2006-06-09

First of all, I have to say that I celebrate this movie. To me, George Romero is one of the most down to earth people in the movie business and nothing brings me more joy than knowing that he finally got to make this movie with a budget.

Now, let me also say that, because I'm such a huge Romero fan, that I went to this film with huge expectations. I suffered some discomfort from moments in this movie which showed some sophomoric technique which seemed so below him. But overall, I left the Land of the Dead feeling satisfied.

The good: Romero really knows his atmosphere. The sets in this movie were amazing. Huge cities with empty, isolated districts, the contrasting pent-house of the upper crust and the outskirts where the dead walk were filmed and executed brilliantly. It really is one of there rare films where it creates a place in which the viewer can be absorbed while suspending their sense of disbelief.

The zombies looked excellent, with the exception of Big Daddy (I'll get into that later). There were so many varieties and they were vicious! All of the actors, with the exception of the main protagonist did an excellent job. This really was a humble but awesome performance by Dennis Hopper and he really added to a large part of the ironic humor that's spread across the film, which was also a big plus. A cheer also for Pillsbury, who had some of the funniest lines in the movie.

The bad: Big Daddy: First and foremost. I understand that this is a pickup from Day of the Dead, but the way in which it was executed did not work for me at all. Philosophically, I always thought that Romero's true masterpieces like Night / Day treated zombies as a backdrop to what the real issue was in propelling social atrophy: the interactions of people. In those first films, it was the developing entropy between individual minds that let the threat outside overwhelm and destroy them. The zombies themselves were just multi-faceted entity banging at the gates (plus they decapitated, ate and ripped people in half which was pretty cool). I feel like Big Daddy put too much emphasis on the undead and detracted from the colorful spectrum of actual personalities in the film which could have been developed and interacted with so much better without Big Daddy's spotlight. It also didn't work because his sentience was near immediate... and the idea of a zombie leader goes way below Romero's talent of extracting issues with subtlety. He should have left intelligent zombies out and kept the interactions with the main characters in.

The main characters: Because of the above, I do not feel they were developed well enough. I wanted so much more from all of them. Just as you feel you knew their personalities they became forgettable. Dennis Hopper especially! His character could have gone so far, that by the time he died... I was rooting for him and not Cholo.

The main protagonist was an empty shell of paperback wisdom. His only lines in the beginnings of the film are nothing but childish rhetoric. I wanted the burned man to be developed more, Asia Argento and the interactions between them and the strike force which went to put Cholo Down.

Last but not least, the ending. The film ended so abruptly, that the above issues didn't seem resolved. I wanted so much more and there was SO MUCH potential that I was slightly disappointed.

Even though by this review you may think that I hated it more than I liked it, nothing can be further than the truth. I only elaborate on the bad things, because they're essential in what didn't make this movie work 100%. But overall, I'm proud to see Romero back on the screen and doing what he does best: making movies and having FUN with it. I will support him to the end.

4 out of 5 stars Smarter Zombies with guns well not quite..........2006-04-03

Having worked through the zombie movies I must say I enjoyed this the most even more than Shaun of the dead. The bandstand scene alone is worth it and I did laugh a lot at the excessive gore.
It is just a bit of light entertainment with some pop politics thrown in to give it a little weight but it ended up like any old morality tale the greedy get their come uppance and the hero prospers.A new twist for Romeros films as the endings are usually bleak as all get devoured.
I would recommend this as a good get the friends round and have a laugh watch it with Shaun of the dead kick off your shoes and enjoy oh and stock up on fireworks.

4 out of 5 stars George A. Romero proves that zombies still creep us out.......2005-10-20

We should have known that if George A. Romero was going to go back to the well of the living dead another time he was going to come up with something different. What "George A. Romero's Land of the Dead" (the director's name goes up top so you know this is not merely another remake of one of his zombie films, like last year's "Dawn of the Dead") offers is two variations on the familiar theme. The first is in this brave new world humanity has found a way of perpetuating the old divide between the "haves" and "haves not," even when there are all those zombies out there suggest it should now be "us" versus "them." Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) has set up Fiddler's Green, a luxury high rise on an island between a couple of rivers (think the location of Three River Stadium in Romero's old stomping ground of Pittsburgh even though the movie is shot in Toronto). There the "haves" live while the rest of the island has the "have nots," some of whom are hired as mercenaries to go out into the world and bring back "necessities." Apparently money still matters in the "Land of the Dead," or perhaps people are merely trying to hold on to the old way of life, because the poor are not listening to those advocating going and taking away from the rich.

Consequently, humanity has found a way to survive. You can compare the more active approach of "Land of the Dead" with the mall rats of "Dawn of the Dead," who found a passive means of existence. Kaufman has built Dead Reckoning, a gigantic armored vehicle that leads foraging parties out into the world. These parties are led by Riley (Simon Baker), whose primary goal is getting everybody back alive, which does not always happen. That is because he works with Cholo (John Leguizamo), who has a different idea of necessities, one attuned to the fine tastes of Kaufman. Both men believe they are on their last mission at the start of this 2005 film, Riley because he will have now earned enough to pay for a car to get out of town and Cholo because he believes he has now earned the chance to move on up to Fiddler's Green. Both are wrong and that sets up the conflict to come.

This is where the second variation comes into play. Kaufman not only created a high rise where the "haves" are protected from that "have nots," some of whom actually help the "haves" have even more, but the entire island is zombie proof. This forces Romero to change the zombie part of the equation, and so we are introduced to Big Daddy (Eugene Clark), who runs a gas station and has a moment akin to when the ape looks at the thigh bone in "2001: A Space Odyssey." Just to help us along the voice over at the start of the film warn us that if the zombies ever develop anything approaching rudimentary thinking skills that would be a bad thing, a very bad thing indeed. So, of course, that is what happens. After all, if you can have bad humans, then you can have good zombies (Joss Whedon has convinced me being dead does not make a character inherently bad).

Having a zombie to root for is quite a different experience, but Romero also delivers on the guts and gore when the zombies go into their patented feeding frenzy. The narrative can offer all the sly social satire it wants, we watch these movies to be disgusted by the bloody scenes of cannibalism. The people Romero hires to do makeup and special effects are clearly on the cutting edge when it comes to this type of work. Even when you watch the DVD special features and you see what they are doing in bright light most of it will still creep you out, so the scenes in the film shot at night or in the shadows with the liberal application of blood and other things it is even worse (which is a good thing in a zombie movie).

The bottom line is that Romero delivers just what his fans want with this movie so that there is not a problem with failing to meet expectations. No, "Land of the Dead" is not the best of the bunch, but for my money nothing will surpass the original "Night of the Living Dead." The important thing is that here we are four films into the series, limiting ourselves to just the Romero helmed ones, and the series is certainly going a lot strong than the other comparable horror series, all of which have been abandoned by their creators (which is either a cause or effect). Final Note: Look for Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright of "Shaun of the Dead" fame as the photo booth zombies in one of the classic cameos of the early 21st century.
