Great Set! Not Available in the USA.......2007-11-02
Here is one great set of movies! And in the Phantasm Sphere to store the movies yet!
Yet here we are almost three years after it's release and it's still not available in the USA!!??? And even if you wanted to purchase the complete set(sphere is not available), plus movie two (Phantasm II: The Ball is Back)is not available at all for purchase be it on DVD or VHS even!
So those who want these Phantasm movies need to have a multi-region (America is Region 1 and UK DVD are region 2) DVD player along with the player having an internal PAL/NTSC converter (we in America have NTSC TV).
This is one fine set of movies!
5 star box set!.......2006-12-30
In the states we can only get Phantasm 1 and 4. They won't release the other two on DVD. For that reason I bought this set and I'm more than happy. Due to some being better than others I wish they would have made it a trilogy instead. I'm still glad they made the fourth one to clear up loose ends. The sphere is well made with the discs sitting securely in foam. The movies never looked better and DTS sound is more than I could have asked for. You should pick up this set since you may never see it again.
Phantassimo.......2006-06-12
The Phantasm movies (all 4 of them) were always ahead of their time. Especially the 2nd and 3rd installations were the best movies of their genre until the digital movie era.
This set is also includes the "phantasmagoria" (5th dvd) which is a 97-minute feature, which cant be easily found as a stand alone dvd, with interviews from Don Coscarelli, producer Paul Pepperman, Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister, Michael Baldwin and Bill Thornbury (as well as the Lady in Lavender).
Dont miss this set if you are a fantasy/horror movie lover. I believe it will become a very valuable collectors item as soon as its out of print.
I hope Don produces a 5th Phantasm some day.
this isn't so much a review as a warning!.......2005-12-24
this has nothing to do with the films- they are all great and any one reading this will already know that. but please be very careful when opening your box as the outer package is so flimsy that it will rip the box open (like mine did) when you try to get inside. just a little warning!
Finally the best horror series gets its due on DVD!.......2005-11-24
The Phantasm series is my favourite horror movie series. Much as I love Romero's Dead and Raimi's Evil Dead films, Phantasm's loopy dream logic and anything-goes weirdness beats them hands down (and I like Reggie better than Ash too). However in terms of DVD coverage, the series has been treated poorly - until now.
BIG kudos to Anchor Bay for the stellar job they've done on this release. Every movie is beautifully remastered, and I've noticed a lot more visual detail than ever before - on the VHS release of Phantasm II I couldn't even see that one of the spheres was a different colour to the others!
The supplements are fappo too. The commentaries on all four discs are great, though III does suffer a little from Don Coscarelli's absence. Up & coming Brit cult auteur Jake (Razor Blade Smile, Evil Aliens) West contributes a phantastic doco on the bonus disc, and the other more minor supplements (the Reggie tour etc) are mostly worthwhile. Even some of the easter eggs are substantial featurettes in themselves!
The packaging is beautiful. Who hasn't wanted one of those lovely silver spheres on their shelf? Like all novelty packaging it's a bit suspect for actually storing the DVDs safely, but it looks damn cool - a lot better than Anchor Bay's chintzy Hellraiser puzzlebox.
The movies themselves are the real fappo. My personal favourite is II, because the first time I saw it I felt like I'd already dreamt it. I is a spooky and cool kid's nightmare a la Invaders From Mars and The 5000 Fingers Of Dr. T. III is a fun (if silly) action/comedy entry. IV is a beautiful return to the aesthetics of the original.
These movies are not for those who value coherent storylines and polished Hollywood acting above all else. However if you like a touch (or a huge dollop) of surrealism in your horror, the Phantasm movies are a must.

Angels and Diminishing Returns........2008-01-10
The three films decline in quality as is the way with sequels. However all three are watchable entertainment.
The first is truly original. With a small group of humans finding themselves caught up in the war between groups of angels which is apparently going on in heaven. Christopher Walken, Eric Close and Viggo Mortensen as angels all have great screen presence. Adding to the fast paced thriller atomsphere and the novel back story. Involving a girl being fought over by rival groups of angels and an ex-priest.
Number two manages to maintain some of the same atmosphere but doesn't have the originality of the first. Think 'B' movie straight to video quality rather than the quirky originality of number 1.
Number three is only for those who liked the first two or who will watch anything with Christopher Walken or Vincent Spano.

The Prophecy has a aspect ratio 2.35:1 { Classification: 18 }
The Prophecy 2 has a aspect ratio 1.85:1 { Classification: 18 }
The Prophecy 3 has a aspect ratio 1.85:1 { Classification: 15 }
Personally I prefer 2.35:1 ratio so its just a shame they did not keep that for 2 and 3.
anyway its good value despite the mixture of aspect ratio
The war between Heaven and Hell.......2005-03-22
The movie is great. Chritopher Walken is superb, the only problem with this movies is the way it was directed it makes you feel that you are watching a sieries not a movie.

my mate introduced me to the prophecy and i enjoyed it from the first time i saw it. the role of gabriel suits christopher walken down to the ground and he plays the part really well. the two sequels are well interesting i suppose, but the first in the trilogy is the best by far....
