Resident Evil 2 - Apocalypse [2004]

Amazon.co.uk Review

2002's popular video-game-derived hit Resident Evil didn't inspire confidence in a sequel, but Resident Evil: Apocalypse defies odds and surpasses expectations. It's a bigger, better, action-packed zombie thriller, and this time Milla Jovovich (as the first film's no-nonsense heroine) is joined by more characters from the popular Capcom video games, including Jill Valentine (played by British hottie Sienna Guillory) and Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr, from 1999's The Mummy). They're armed and ready for a high-caliber encounter with devil dogs, mutant "Lickers," lurching zombies, and the leather-clad monster known only as Nemesis, unleashed by the nefarious Umbrella Corporation responsible for creating the cannibalistic undead horde. Having gained valuable experience as a respected second-unit director on high-profile films like Gladiator and The Bourne Identity, director Alexander Witt elevates this junky material to the level of slick, schlocky entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A great sequel.......2008-02-25

The sequel to Resident Evil is pretty much what you'd expect. After being captured by the Umbrella Corporation at the end of the first film, almost-sole-survivor Alice (Milla Jovovich) wakes up in an abandoned laboratory in Raccoon City to find that the zombie-inducing `t-virus' has infected Raccoon City. Half the city is already infected and Umbrella Corporation has sealed off the city limits and is planning to "sanitize" the area.

Hooking up with a rag-tag group of survivors, Alice makes a deal with a rogue Umbrella scientist who promises to get them out of the city if they rescue his missing daughter who's lost in the city. But as you may imagine Umbrella has its own plans for Alice and seven-foot armour-clad mutant called Nemesis who's using the infected city as a training ground. Cue much shooting, fighting and explosions.

I really enjoyed Resident Evil: Apocalypse as a thriller with action, suspense and a bit of gore thrown in to keep up with the genre. Mila Jovovich is brilliant as Alice and with the addition of Sienna Guillory as Valentine and Oded Fehr as Carlos Olivera you've got all the ingredients for a shoot-em-up action thriller with a twist. As with the first movie the cliffhanger ending leaves the door wide open for the next installment in the series.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SEQUEL.......2007-10-19

Resident Evil was great, but this sequel is equal/better. Rarely can you say this about a sequel, but i thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is fast paced and there's more action than you can shake a stick at.

The story links well with the end of the original and when the third film is released, i reckon we'll have a great trilogy on our hands.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the first one.......2007-09-17

If you felt the first "Resident Evil" movie didn't quite capture the atmosphere of the original game, you can sleep a little easier now. "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" has EVERYTHING: from dark, creepy graveyards, a Gothic cathedral and classic lorries in an "Escape from New York"- style deserted city to a cigarette smoking Jill Valentine and half naked hooker zombies. Although this sequel clearly had a much bigger budget than the original film, director Alexander Witt has kept it credible and didn't use digital technology to bombard your senses and keep your mind of the lack of a decent storyline. Rather than making you feel like you're watching a computer- made movie where nothing seems real, the special effects help create a desolate and panicky atmosphere with credible characters who struggle to survive in a city that's infested with their undead compatriots, partially decayed K-9s and other creepy lifeforms. The scene where one survivor has to go up against a class of elementary school zombies is just terrifying. Unlike the director of the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, Witt and producer/ script writer Paul W.S. Anderson have opted not to follow in the footsteps of the fast- moving "28 Days Later" zombies, but has clearly been inspired not only by George Romero's view of walking corpses, but also by his opinion of our western society. The real evil in this movie is not the zombies or even the killer mutant Nemesis (who looks and sounds like he has just stepped out of the original game and into this movie), but a Big Brother- style multinational that puts itself above the law and has no respect whatsoever for morale, decency or anything human. Even if you've never played the video game, didn't like the first "Resident Evil" movie or don't care for a lot of high tech military action in a horror film, I'd still highly recommend you take the time to watch this one. If you liked both the 1978 version of "Dawn of the Dead" and "Aliens", you're going to love "Resident Evil: Apocalypse". Besides, if internationally acclaimed Milla Jovovich agreed to add it to her résumé of, among others, "the Fifth Element", "the Messenger: the Story of Jean of Arc" and "the Million Dollar Hotel", it has to be good!

5 out of 5 stars a cracker of a movie.......2008-02-14

I've never played the games, so I don't have a reference point to comment in that regard. I enjoyed this movie, great pace, nasty creatures, evil zombies, and the shadowy and malicious Umbrella corporation - fantastic. We even get an explanation about where the T virus has come from and the motivation behind it. The film advanced the storyline perfectly for the next installment - I can't wait!

3 out of 5 stars only good bits are the special bits!!.......2008-01-10

tbh i thought the first film was a good adaptation on the resident evil story, a little wayward, with some exceptionally dodgy moments and some quite bad cgi (i.e the licker) but as the film was done on a budget a decent attempt. This however, well where do i start.

if you've played resident evil 3:nemesis you'll probably be let down. you will remember the scary streets with horrifying zombies and the scariest (yet very annoying) nemesis bursting out to attack you every which way you turned. This, well... its nothing like that. nemesis is no longer scary, he doesnt pop out from nowhere and try to club the characters to death, just plods about, and maybe shoots some people with his newly aquired minigun. admittidely its not that bad a change, but the story has! its went from the struggle of a few S.T.A.R.S members, into another "im alice and i'll save the world" fest. what happened to the storyline following jill, after all isnt she the main character in the game??? now shes nothing more then a sub character thrown in, just to make it sound more like the game a kinda "we have to put her in, to make the film a tiny bit like the game otherwise people wont like it". i admit it would be hard to make the game into a film, but i feel like they've just used certain locations, and characters just as a backdrop to a new story they just happened to make up, on the day.

saying all that, its not really a bad film, not really scary, but not bad. but as someone who slaved away for hours trying to find a stupid gem to fit into some stupid statue, while getting attacked as you walk down a suspicious alleyway, its just not good enough, and the one bit that really blew it for me and made this film completely stupid. the fact that nemesis has feelings, it just feels tacky and cheap and undermines everything the character nemesis is meant to be.

Although The special features are very good though it cant redeem the film from being just another way to squeeze moeny out of resident evil fans. :(

4 out of 5 stars JUMPY MOMENTS.......2007-10-24

Watched at the cinema this week and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I felt it was the weakest of the trilogy and lacked some of the storyline the previous films enjoyed.

The world has been decimated by the Umbrella Corp's 'T' virus and only a precious few remain uninfected. The story follows a convoy of survivors who keep moving to avoid the millions of zombie dead wandering around. The special effects are excellent, particularly a Las Vegas reclaimed by the desert, and the action scenes come thick and fast. The film makers have cornered the market for 'make you jump' scenes, even though you know it's coming, the drink, popcorn and Minstrels fly into the next row (fortunately you get stuff back from your adjoining audience members).

Deffinately one to see if you enjoyed the first films but the story has been left open for a fourth episode, i just hope we don't end up with a Nightmare on Elm Street/Friday 13th situation.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe 4 after a few beers.......2008-03-07

Image quality and sound were OK/good for blu-ray, but not top notch.
However I am pretty new to blu-ray so don't give too much weight to that.
As far as film goes it depends what you are wanting.
If you are after a shoot 'em up full of zombies being shot as the hero's go from A to B, to C, to D.. then you are in for a treat.
If you are after an intellectual challenge then prepare to do a crossword at the same time.
Some decent acting (shoot zombie, kick zombie, hit zombie) by some attractive looking actresses/actors and Milla plays her part well.

5 out of 5 stars Even better on Blu-Ray!.......2008-01-03

This is an excellent film (as is the first one) that I've had on standard DVD for ages but this version is simply stunning, its almost like watching the film for the first time as there seems to be so much more to see that isn't apparent on the standard DVD.

NB: I'd recommend adjusting your TV's picture to a setting with high brightness & contrast and cool colours as too much 'warmth' can ruin the HD effect.

The special features are very good too and there's a Blu-Wizard that allows you to select from a list of extras designed to be watched with the film. your choices are seamlessly integrated into the film at appropriate points, which is an excellent concept.

4 out of 5 stars A fun, action-packed horror flick.......2007-12-05

'Resident Evil: Apocalypse' sees the outbreak of the deadly T-virus spread onto the streets of Racoon City, infecting it's residents and turning them into flesh-eating zombies. If that's not enough there are also zombie dogs, creatures with razor-sharp tongues and the Umbrella Corporation's deadliest weapon, Nemesis, who's primary objective is to eliminate all the members of the rescue team S.T.A.R.S. Milla Jovovich returns as Alice, who alongside Jill Valentine and Carlos Olivera takes the Umbrella Corporation head-on whilst also trying to save as many of the city's survivors as possible.

This is easily the best in the Resident Evil trilogy of movies - especially for the first hour. If you've ever played the game of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis that came out a few years ago, you'll see that this game is pretty much spot-on to the locations, characters and action of the game, just with the addition of Alice from the previous movie. Although it isn't very beleiveable or realistic and doesn't provide the scares that you'd get from other zombie films like George A Romero's Dead movies, this is an extremely enjoyable film with enough cheesy acting to keep you entertained throughout and the action is literally non-stop and the special effects are brilliant.

I can't think of many bad points about this movie and watching it on the Blu Ray format is simply breathtaking. Highly recommended for anyone after an exciting, action-packed no-brainer.
