Rose Red [2001]

Amazon.co.uk Review

The leisurely pace of the horror miniseries Rose Red is like settling into a long book full of detail--a book not unlike those of Stephen King, who wrote the script. The story (about a researcher into the paranormal who takes a team of psychics into a haunted house) recycles themes that King has used before--a telekinetic girl, a house with its own consciousness--but for his fans, the familiarity is probably comfortable and even enjoyable. The cast (including Nancy Travis, Julian Sands, and Melanie Lynsky from Heavenly Creatures) gives committed performances, and the special effects are television-grade but used pretty well. Most of it doesn't make much sense, but at its best Rose Red is absurd and creepy at the same time. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Haunted house movie.......2007-12-30

This film is a good tv movie, as I have learned from other reviewers; this was a three part mini series. It gives viewers a decent amount of entertainment; only if you like this sort thing. I mean, like the story of people entering a haunted house, although it seems to drag but satisfies people's fantasy of the haunted house genre. I would say this is a must watch for horror fans and of course for Stephen King admirers; but do not expect anything that has not already been covered in other haunted house movies. Other than the lack of originality; it is good entertainment and passes your time. There is also a nice special appearance by King himself. It seems that because King has established himself so well, as the horror writer/movie creator; that anything he does related to the genre is well recieved by audiences. This film is good, but far from excellent. There are parts in the movie, that could have been made better; and the plot although already well thought out by King, still could have been a little deeper giving this movie more punch. The ending of a movie can make or break it. I believe the ending could have included more action, however it is still satisfactory. It is certainly a decent tv mini series and I will certainly put it on for guests who have not seen it.

4 out of 5 stars She holds the key that will unlock Rose Red...................2007-06-24

I brought this dvd because of the postive reviews I read here, so thanks to all those who wrote them, as you were spot on!

Rose Red tells the tale of a group of psychics led by a slightly manic professor. Her ambition is to prove paranormal acitivty is real, by investigating Rose Red, a huge mansion thought to be haunted. The professor is dermined to obtain her proof in order to salvage her career, no matter what the cost to the others in her party.

The mansion is done very well and there is real sense of doom and forboding about Rose Red. It may not be jump in your seat scary, but it certainly does send a chill down your spine.

The acting is solid, as is the storyline. All in all, I really enjoyed this and will certainly be watching it again!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but not excellent.......2007-02-25

I like Stephen King films! Sorry, had to come clean with that first of all! I know alot of his hardened fans arent so keen on his film tie ins but I havent read any of his books so I view each film totally unbiased.

That said, Rose Red is a nicely comstructed story about the nature of obsession, for the most part the characters are well thought out and well acted, the Emmy character was excellently done and Julian Sandes character was cool but came and went far too easily (really wanted to see what that character could REALLY do)

All in all, I would say that for a TV movie, it was definately above average and I watched in twice in a week so it must have something!

5 out of 5 stars Luxurious Horror.......2006-09-10

Rose Red is the story of a vast, rambling, shape-shifting mansion with her own persona that has the nasty habit of "swallowing" visitors up in her apparently infinite rooms, and who are never seen or heard of again. A parapsychologist, driven to exasperation by the derision of her psychology department peers, sets out to recruit a team of psychics to prove beyonmd doubt that a haunting can be recorded scientifically.

A mini-series adapted into a two-disc DVD set, Rose Red actually plays out like a long movie. The production is sumptuous for a TV show, and in technical terms surpasses much of the other Stephen King stories that have been adapted into big screen films. The colourful characters, the elaborate sets inside the rambling old haunted house, and both the costumes and camera-work are all well done and frankly a joy to watch. The ghostly appearences are more in the brightly shining mode of the "Poltergeist" flms, but it's not the special effects that are the winners here.

The acting is really good from a cast portraying a highly eccentric group of ghostbusters paid to enter Rose Red, after twenty years of the house lying empty. From the deeply religious and goody-goody to the selfish and arrogant, the larger than life characters and their idiosynchracies provide the life of the story.

One of the most fascinating is the parapsychologist herself; at equally as eccentric as the rest of her team, she is a real enigma. Like many of the other strange characters, as the film picks up in its pace, one begins to doubt (or at least think about) what their true role and agenda is.

Although not in the gore-vein of horror, Rose Red is nevertheless a film of luscious creepieness with a strong cast and an engrossing story, which includes a history of the house's former occupants built up in flashbacks throughout. Well worth watching, whether you're a Stephen King fan or not.

4 out of 5 stars Chilling, yes but not terrorizing or even horrifying.......2006-02-04

In this mini-series Stephen King is not the original author and he remained faithful to the original book. And the result shows. The special effects, the general treatment and processing of all situations are perfect and very impressive, though not necessarily frightening. Stephen King tries hard to avoid gross elements and also tries hard to remain within the limits of decency. So we are not gripped in our tripe or gut and we remain intellectually active. The special effects then are an object of study and consideration, not a frightening element. The house itself is beautiful and the actors are quite good. The rhythm is slow, since it is a miniseries, hence video art and not cinema and that too gives time to develop a situation. The only real situational element is the conflict between the head of the « expedition » and the head of her department. The conflict leads to an interesting characterisation of university department heads as blockheads and narrow-minded, not to say blind, people. Stephen King also develops the characterization of the six psychics who take part in the expedition. There we have a lot of humor and it is even funny. And yet the house does not find a kingian dimension because the evil that lives in it is not identified in its deepest roots and hence in its most frightening dimension : fear comes from within the viewer and not from outside. If the viewer cannot identify himself with one character or one situation he is not going to be frightened or it will only be superficial and in no way time-enduring. Decently we cannot identify with this enormous house because we are not a house and because we cannot ever dream to have or have had such a fancy house. We remain outsiders in the film. We may identify with the explorers, and yet even so they are shown as different, as abnormal in many ways and we cannot project our normal selves into them. It is a shame because the house was obviously built along many lines we can recognize here and there on models that come from many films, some of them horror films. But the magic of horror is not there.
