Amazon.co.uk Review
Anyone who has even the slightest trouble with insomnia after seeing a horror movie should stay away from The Blair Witch Project--this film will creep under your skin and stay there for days. Credit for the effectiveness of this mock documentary goes to filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, who armed three actors (Heather Donahue, Michael Williams, and Josh Leonard) with video equipment, camping supplies, and rough plot outlines. They then let the trio loose into the Maryland woods to improvise and shoot the entire film themselves as the filmmakers attempted to scare the crap out of them. Gimmicky, yes, but it worked--to the wildly successful tune of $130 million at the US box office upon its initial release (the budget was a mere $40,000). For those of you who were under a rock when it first hit the cinemas, The Blair Witch Project tracks the doomed quest of three film students shooting a documentary on the legend of the Blair Witch from Burkittsville, Maryland. After filming some local yokels (and providing only scant background on the witch herself), the three, led by Heather (something of a witch herself), head into the woods for some on-location shooting. They're never seen again. What we see is a reconstruction of their "found" footage, edited to make a barely coherent narrative. After losing their way in the forest, whining soon gives way to real terror as the three find themselves stalked by unknown forces that leave piles of rocks outside their campsite and stick-figure art projects in the woods. (As Michael succinctly puts it, "No redneck is this clever!") The masterstroke of the film is that you never actually see what's menacing them; everything is implied, and there's no terror worse than that of the unknown. If you can wade through the tedious arguing--and the shaky, motion-sickness-inducing camerawork--you'll be rewarded with an oppressively sinister atmosphere and one of the most frightening denouements in horror-film history. Even after you take away the monstrous hype, The Blair Witch Project remains a genuine, effective original. --Mark Englehart, Amazon.com

Interesting And Very Different.......2008-02-16
For some reason I have had went best part of a decade before I saw this film. The initial mock-documentary footage is very realistic. The interviews with locals about the "Blair Witch" actually had me double checking that parts weren't really a documentary.
The highlight for me with this film is about half way in when things start to go a bit creepy for them. It's well done and very subtle. After that I was starting to become a bit irritated by them, especially the girl. I kept coming back to the fact that they were so stupid to have gotten lost in the first place! Also constantly at the back of my mind was the fact that the budget for this film was so low, almost like a student project. I started to ask myself if I could actually make a film like this!
Overall it's definitely worthwhile seeing. It's an interesting and very different film. The short running time actually is a bonus as I was starting to wane towards the end. I have no great desire to see it again but I can see it being the type of film people may watch over and over again to figure out parts, especially the ending.
6/10
Fantastic film...5 stars for not being spoilt by noisey, busy special effects.......2008-02-15
Unlike those who believe this film was simply hyped to hysteria, I sat back and watched this one evening recently and was hooked. Its atmospheric without trying to hard and the characters are normal and vulnerable like most of us. So simple, 3 characters, no special effects...just that fly on the wall feeling of watching these characters make some mistakes that any of us could make, however slowely they find themselves getting deeper and deeper into trouble. Lol - whoever thought a rattling tent could be so scary !! Simply put, watch this film and if you have an open mind and some imagination...then you may just find yourself hiding behing the sofa. If you havent then I suggest you go looking for high budget, special effects, slash and dash movies !!!
No Frills, No fear, lots of Yawns...........2007-10-05
This is absolutely a waste of money. Some kids go out into the woods with a camera and come back with what is a really lousy film. It isn't scary. It isn't funny. It isn't pleasant to watch. I do not mind new styles or experimentation in filming. But this does not work. Only good point is the very end...if you remember...but what it has to do with a witch.... Nothing. Save your money.
WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH !!.......2007-09-19
The Hype machine ruined this film. I expected to be terrified, i wanted to hide behind my seat, i wanted to run from the room in a hurry. NOTHING HAPPENED.
I have been more frightened shaving!! The whole thing was awful. Shaking cameras, yelling and screaming off screen, heavy breathing and sobbing. I really didn't 'GET IT' at all. Sorry film maker but not for me.
Is everyone delusional. Unoriginal crap.......2007-08-02
Firstly, let me start by saying i'm a massive horror fan. Have been for the last 30 years. I am a child of the 70s and a teenager of the 80s so have watched all the classic and the pre 1984 video nasties. My tastes are quite diverse and i basically enjoy anything that has the ability to scare and get under your skin. True psychological horror movies that stay with you long after the credits are the following:The Entity, The Omen, The changeling, The Evil Dead, Dawn of the Dead(70s version)The list goes on. Roll to the future and imagine my anticipation and the media frenzy that introduced the upcoming Blair Witch Project as the "most scariest film of all time" The Sun newspaper even told how one reporter was on the verge of a heart attack as she had a heart monitor on.This surely was an original idea: handheld, gonzo camerawork to add to the realism. The internet stories of how the 'actors' were really missing. I couldn't wait. Surely this form of low budget, in your face, horror was the new messiah of terror.
Now the reality.
This was the most painfully dull, pathetically over acted piece of tripe i have ever seen. When people say they were scared i feel like shaking them and asking "why was it scary? How could it scare you? What is there to scare you?"
I'm a strong believer in less is more. What i don't believe in is nothing is more, which basically this film is. Nothing happens! A shaking tent (in the dark) A "I saw something in the woods." Cue nothing! "Look someones made a sign out of twigs" Ooooooh!I can't look(sarcasm)"He's stood in the corner" The camera drops. You see a fleeting glimpse of.....yes,that's right. Nothing!
Jeez, the morons who made this are not horror fans. Real horror fans would place subliminal images into a movie, such as when the torch quickly scans the distant trees you place a faint white face somewhere. Not an obvious face. A face that last a nano second. Just enough for the viewer to think "Did i just see...no i can't have..must be my imagination" You get it! When the camera falls at the end. A fleeting darkness passes the lense. You don't see anything, but you think...yes you think...it's that simple.
Basically, we were all ripped off. The 'directors' took the money and ran. They were asked to make the sequel, but refused. Simple fact they weren't capable of making another 'proper' movie and although it's also a weak film at least the subliminal messages were there. Blair Witch was just a rip off of The Last Broadcast, which was made years before it and is much, although still amateur made, scarier. It just didn't have the internet hype to carry it.
I wasted my money at the cinema, don't let them take yours from this coffee coaster dvd. Scared of this film? Go back to watching Bridget Jones' Diary where you belong!
Only gets a 1 star because it won't let me give a zero or a minus in this case.
