not perfect but very good indeed.........2008-02-27
very interesting film indeed.. miles better than zombie's first offering "house of 1000 corpes" that starts good but kind of becomes a joke eventually.. his first film did show glimpses of his talent, but ended up as a self-indulgent, overly bizzare horror piece that made little sense.. on the other hand this one is very well structured, has no holes in the plot and has a focused simple story that has a grittier edge but doesnt get ruined from too many weird visuals and uneeded nastiness and gore.. also it easily stands on its own and can be watched without seeing the house of 1000 c first..
Many of the reviewers here talk about how brutal, disturbing and nasty this film is but i totally disagree.. Its nowhere close to other recent offerings like the saw trilogy, hostel, hills hv eyes, even the new texas chainsaw etc..
unpleasant and dark yes but def not gory or gross as some here claim. i am not even sure it can be classified as horror...
great characters even if mainly one dimensional, especially great camera work- not overdone as in his first film, clever cutting/editing and most of all not just great, but superb 70s soundrack that makes this film a bit more special than what it really is..
the combo of the ending with the song played is i think genious...
not 5 stars cause at the end of the day there is not much depth, but other than that just great........
An excellent follow up........2008-02-24
Rob Zombie here cements his reputation as a great cult director, with this gory, western-tinged horror sequel to the decent 'House of 1000 Corpses'. It's well written and acted, and surprisingly watchable even for those who are not necessarily horror fans. Unlike many horrors, it gives the killers real motives, personalities and makes them quite likeable, in a sick kind of way. If you can take a step back from the violence and see the quality of the film, you're in from a real treat here.
hidden gem ???.......2007-12-26
rented this just out of curiosity , not being a big lover of horror but....thoroughly enjoyed it. great soundtrack , well made ( this was a BIG surprise !) just felt it was a bit too o.t.t with some of the violence . loved the end ( thelma & louise anyone ? ) all this & a cheap trick t-shirt ( this gained it another 1/2 star in my humble opinion )
Don't watch it, you'll only encourage him to make more..........2007-10-29
When Rob Zombie made 'House of 1000 corpses', there was little original about the plot or directing. It was helped along by a surreal edge that kind of held the interest. Unfortunately comparing his films to the classic slasher/exploitation flicks is like comparing his music to that of 'Black Sabbath'. The original masters of the genre win hands down every time.
Now, for starters there are some changes to characters/plot that don't mesh with the first film to which this is meant to follow. This is meant to give a grittier edge, but I found it annoying. Secondly, the plot sides the viewers with the bad guys. No problems there per se, it has been done before and with great success (see 'Natural Born Killers', 'The Wild Bunch', 'From dusk til dawn'). Here it is attempted with such lack of subtlety that I was willing the whole lot of them to be gunned down as quickly as possible. As for the violence, I did not find it shocking or disturbing because again it was so unsubtle and gratuitous, played without any originality that it quickly tires. However, lots of people enjoyed it so as always, it's best to make up your own mind. Try doing so without parting with money though. On a more positive note, Mr. Zombie's 'Halloween' remake is much more watchable.
Top secret clown business........2007-10-26
First of all let me point out that although Devil's Rejects is technically a sequel to 1000 Corpses, Rejects can be viewed on it's own without having seen 1000 Corpses. When I saw 1000 Corpses I wasn't that impressed overall. It made little sense and wasn't very entertaining. I did however like Zombie's style, or at least the style he was aiming for. For this reason, and due to a positive review from Rodger Ebert, I bought this DVD. It's clear from the very start of this movie that Zombie has looked at 1000 Corpses objectively and tried not to retread the same mistakes with Rejects. His style is intact, but now it's clearer and in better context. There is a very clear advancement in Zombie's talents between 1000 Corpses and Rejects. The gritty look from 1000 Corpses is here but without the confusing camera movements and weird visuals. The script is much better, acheiving both humour and disturbing brutality often at the same time. Captain Spalding hilariously comandeering a woman's car is one of my favourite moments in the movie. The acting is good with not a single hint of overacting. The soundtrack is fantastic and a real stand out aspect of this movie. Zombie even throws in the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd song Free Bird. I recommend everyone to give this film a go.
