3 out of 5 stars funny!.......2008-03-04

i have a very weird way of looking at horror films, sometimes they scare the hell out of me and other times they are so bad or poorly shot that they actually make me laugh. This film did both, i actually really liked the way this was shot especially the scenes where we are viewing the friends through the eyes of the evil dead, the flying camera shots that skip across the ground and go as fast as lightening. On the other hand, though there were a few scary moments, the majority of the film had me in hysterics, there was no way i could be scared by the creatures when they looked so funny!!

5 out of 5 stars The original classic.......2007-10-09

Sam Raimi's genre-defining splatter-fest still remains one of the most inventive and entertaining horror films ever released. I rather ashamedly admit I only saw this gem for the first time quite recently and I immediately wished I had discovered it years before.

It is quite evident that 'The Evil Dead' has shaped an enumeration of horror flicks across the years and the teenagers-trapped-in-a-remote-cabin them has been recycled to death. Even with its low-budget, and decidedly eighties effects, this film hacks and splices glossier rivals into itty-bitty pieces for sheer entertainment value. More of a serious chiller than its sequels, there is a nice line in black humour pervading the script nonetheless and, of course, Bruce Campbell is utterly fabulous as geeky hero Ash. In fact, I challenge you to come away from this film without uttering the words, " Bruce Campbell is a legend"! His bemused look of incomprehension as the blood count rises (and rise it does, my friends) is one of the film's many enjoyable moments and it is easy to see why Campbell has become such a cult hero.

So, in short, this is one of the greatest horror films of all time. In terms of pure and simple fun, things don't get much better than this. So open up the Book Of The Dead and unleash The Evil Dead onto your DVD player tonight!

5 out of 5 stars I REALLY ENJOYED THIS ENTRY INTO THE ZOMBIE FILM GENRE.......2007-08-06

Five friends, Ash, (Bruce Campbell) Scotty, (Richard DeManincor) Cheryl, (Ellen Sandweiss) Linda, (Betsy Baker) and Shelly (Theresa Tilly) head on up to an old cabin for a fun weekend. As they settle in for the night, there's the opening of a cellar door in Linda's room that draws everyone's attention. Scotty descends into the basement and finds a secret room full of artifacts and special treasures, including a strange book and recording that details the resurrection for an ancient species of creatures that feast on human flesh. While listening to the recording, strange things begin to happen. During the night, Cheryl is brutally assaulted and raped by the trees surrounding the cabin. Trying to take her away, Ash finds out that the only road out is no longer usable. Returning back to the cabin, she begins to show symptoms of being possessed by demons. Soon, Ash is the only one not possessed, and he must fight them off to save his insanity.

The Good News: Oh, my god, this was the best movie ever. "The Evil Dead" has to be the best horror film ever. There was so many times that I was jumping during this film I loved it. That is the way a true horror film should be. It holds nothing back, and just throws ordeal after ordeal at the viewer. What makes the film so appealing is that jumps/suspense and gore can go together in a film. This is one gory film. We get one body completely dismembered, with no two body parts connected together, one is stabbed in the foot with a pencil and two are melted down in a long, unbelievably gory way. Both last for a long time as well, so the gore is even more intensive. First, the skin melts away, then the bone starts to melt away and then it just becomes like a giant pool of blood on the floor. There is even more gore inside, and is possibly one of the goriest films of all time. There are very few movies that might be gorier than this one. What makes the gore work so well is that this has so many creepy moments in it that it just makes the gore that much more potent. Anytime the possessed Linda appears on screen, I get freaked out. She is easily the creepiest thing about the movie. Her look, with those blank white eyes, dead man's look make-up and that voice all combine to make her creepy. God, I think that voice alone, though, is more than enough to creep me out. That song she sings all the time is creepy. Even scenes without her are creepy. Ash descending into the basement to look for Scotty after he disappeared is pretty creepy. The low-light in the room, the music playing in the background, Ash's slow, cautionary movements and the odd noises heard from inside the room are perfectly handled, and you are just on edge waiting for the moment when something will pop out and startle someone. That does happen a few times in the movie, and here it works because the viewer is expecting it and it doesn't happen when we think it will. The others are pretty great, as when a pair of hands break through a door and grab Ash around the chest, but the other scene is far better. Everyone knows this is where Bruce Campbell was introduced to the world, and here we get one of his better performances. He is the smart aleck in the later movies, and this one plays it straight. The amount of blood spilled on him throughout the movie is phenomenal that he had to subject himself to that in his first film. All this aside, one of the best things about this movie is the constant use of filming scenes from the demon's point of view. The way that it was filmed is pretty legendary, and the practice of it has become pretty revolutionary and inspirational. We get tons of great, creepy scenes including the opening and ending shots, where we crawl over landscapes in a supernatural way. The ending is great and is a perfect way to end a movie. It sends you out on a high that not too many movies do.

The Bad News: Nothing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best and most unique horror films ever.......2007-08-02

At the time of writing, The Evil Dead is now a quarter of a century old but it is still one of my all time top ten horror movies and it is still capable of giving me the creeps. There are still plenty of timeless moments but the thing that I have always and still really love about this is the creepy camera work and weird noises, I was only a child when I saw this on video not long after it was released but was far too young to understand all the hype and controversy that surrounded it, so from a personal point of view, this just made it all the better. Right from the beginning when the five youngsters are travelling by car on that narrow road alongside those woods and the way in which the camera view hovers over that river as if something evil that cannot be seen is following them, I just had a feeling even at such a young age (I had already seen plenty of horror movies before it and so I was already a converted fan) that this was going to be something like I had never seen before but I wasn't expecting what was about to follow.

Like I said, I love the camera work in this movie for example, when they first arrive at the cabin, the way in which they very slowly drive towards it surrounded by woods and it goes almost deadly silent. For some reason even though absolutely nothing happens when they first arrive, it never fails to give me the creeps when they get out of the car and they all just stand there without saying a word just looking at the cabin as if they don't know what to say or think plus at the same time that thing (I still don't know what the hell it is) outside the cabin which makes that banging noise (and stops when one of them picks up the cabin keys) also for some reason never fails to give me the creeps and I find the whole look of the cabin inside very creepy, all these little underappreciated moments that I find really creepy and this is in the first ten minutes, it just brilliantly plays with my imagination, proof again as far as I am concerned, that the low budget look will always be more scary than any expenisive mainstream blockbuster horror movie can ever be.

Although sometimes the effects in this do look a litte cheap or ridiculous (especially that animation type scene near the end), there are still plenty which are still very effective in my opinion, I still particularly find the eyes by those possessed and the noises that they make truly horrible and that legendary card guessing scene, timeless.

If you have never seen The Evil Dead and you like your horror movies, then the best way I can describe it overall is plenty of blood and guts, funny at times, not at all complex but most importantly it is creepy with some of the best camera and sound effects ever to appear in horror movie. AN UNMISSABLE LOW BUDGET CULT HORROR CLASSIC.

Amazon.co.uk Review

In the Autumn of 1979, Sam Raimi and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Tennessee to make a little film called The Evil Dead. They emerged with a roller coaster of a film packed with shocks, gore and wild humour, a film that remains a benchmark for the genre. Ash (cult favourite Bruce Campbell) and four friends arrive at a backwoods cabin for a vacation, where they find a tape recorder containing incantations from an ancient book of the dead. When they play the tape, evil forces are unleashed and one by one the friends are possessed. Wouldn't you know it, the only way to kill a "deadite" is by total bodily dismemberment and soon the blood starts to fly. Raimi injects tremendous energy into this simple plot, using the claustrophobic set, disorientating camera angles, and even the graininess of the film stock itself to create an atmosphere of dread, punctuated by a relentless series of jump-out-of-your-seat shocks. Much of the film's energy is supplied by the "Raimi-cam," a gliding, swooping, rushing camera that suggests a dislocated, otherworldly point of view while injecting a lively if spooky fleetness to the pace. Though it's no comedy, Raimi's dry wit and cinematic cleverness pervades the entire film. The Evil Dead lacks the more highly developed sense of the absurd that distinguish later entries in the series--Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness--but it is still much more than a gore movie: it marks the appearance of one of the most original and visually exciting directors of his generation, and it stands as a monument to the triumph of imagination over budget. --Simon Leake, Amazon.com

On the DVD: For a film made on the tiniest of budgets and shot in 16 mm, The Evil Dead looks impressive in this widescreen 1.85:1 anamorphic print, even if the picture quality is never going to rival that of 35 mm. The revelation here is the soundtrack, with optional DTS 6.1 audio mix, which showcases Sam Raimi's bizarre assembly of sound effects and Joseph LoDuca's minimalist Bernard Herrmann-inspired score. Director Raimi and Producer Robert Tapert chat amiably about making the film on the first commentary track, but the real treat is Bruce Campbell's "alternate" commentary, which is not only extremely informative but laugh-out-loud funny, too. Among other nuggets we learn that: the distinctive moving camera effects were created by strapping the camera to a plank held between two people who had to run very fast through the woods; most of the actors were so worried about appearing in a horror movie that they made up stage names for the credits; and Raimi's 73 Oldsmobile has since reappeared in almost every one of his films. A trailer and stills gallery complete the extras package. --Mark Walker

5 out of 5 stars WE'RE GONNA GET YOU !.......2006-07-24

Evil dead is something special, something sinister, and something that really brought the horror genre to its knees and started the gore trend that followed. It also brought the world a new nerdy superhero in Ash (bruce campbell).
This is 25 years old,and if you look at the low budget special effects then its fair to say that they look slightly suspect to say the least, but what the film lacks in budget and the kindness of age it makes up in the sheer fear factor and a strong script and cult status in terms of the following that the film would get years after its release.
The story borders on simplicity itself, nothing fancy and over the top here except the gore.Five friends enter the woods to rent a cheap cabin in the woods and awaken the dead by playing a tape that recited words of the book of the dead and thus the dead awaken and lets just say that they aint happy to be woken from their slumber, you would think they would be grateful but they aint.
from here on the blood pours and so does menace and chilling moments such as when the forest turns on one female, certaimly insane. This is one dark film that has hidden depths to it,the sequel is certainly better, despite basically being a remake with more laughs, but in terms of opening the gates of hell to the horror industry this is the leader of the pack.

1 out of 5 stars Poor transfer on Anchor Bay editions.......2006-07-11

Avoid the Anchor Bay edition of this movie like the plaque. The picture quality is atrocious. I must admit that the picture has never looked brilliant for this low budget movie, but I did a side-by-side comparison of this movie between the Elite Entertainment and Anchor Bay editions.
With the Anchor Bay transfer the colours look all wrong and the picture is darker and muddy looking.
The Elite disc the colors look more crisp and the picture is clearer and brighter.

On the Anchor Bay disc the picture has been re-framed from it's original fullscreen 4.3 ratio to fill a 16:9 display. The movie was never shot in widescreen, black bars have simply been added to the top and bottom of the picture resulting in the loss of a lot of picture information and it looks terrible.

The best version and correct version to buy is the Elite Entertainment edition which was released in the U.S. several years ago. It's also region 0 so will play in any DVD player.

Don't let the fancy packaging and cheap extras tempt you into buying the dreadful Anchor Bay editions.

4 out of 5 stars fun with condiments.......2006-02-28

As with many of these films, Evil Dead begins with dialogue so insipid and acting so bad, it's a relief when the zombies actually show up. After that, this is a satisfying ketchup fest, completely over the top, and mercifully free of the dreaded cgi. It's too silly to be frightening, the plot is confused (rapist trees? a self-automating film projector?) and the characters are so flat that zombification actually lends them depth. But if you like to watch cackling, porridge-fleshed, wall-eyed demonesses being dismembered by knife, stake, shotgun, and shovel, while spurting ketchup, mustard, and rice pudding around the interior of a small log cabin, (I do), then this is about as good as it gets.

5 out of 5 stars Histeria in the gorest fashion.......2005-05-25

I intended to watch this film and find it extremely comeidic and it surrpassed my expectation as the line "join us" came out I cried possible annoying after a while but entertaining for a long time even if u detest zombie films check this out. But I don' understand why evil dead 2 is not on this site.

5 out of 5 stars My very very favorite movie.......2007-06-06

Hi guys, I really love this movie since I was a 10 years old kid. I saw it at my home in VCR those days and time to time I watched it and enjoy it more and more. Now I have owned this movie in DVD. so even now I really do enjoy to watch this movie on DVD.
I have only one objection on this DVD release because the mated wide screen version is really sucks, a high amount of picture go disappeared behind the black upper and lower mates really looks a poor wide screen conversion. The movie was recorded in full frame 1.37:1 ration and both in home video and the cinema release in 1980's so this should be watched in real full frame version even now.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC !! !! !! !!.......2006-01-22

The Evil Dead would have been nothing without its over the top gore and blood, The acting is crap, as with the picture quality and the special effects. But the sort of people who did watch this film and didnt mind the violence are probably the sort of people who dont have a film in their collection without these things!
So the film was a hit, but not to the censors, so this was put on the video nast list and banned! (this was also one of the main five most controversial films on the video list along with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Driller Killer, I Spit on your Grave and Tool Box Murders!)
There have been 2 sequels, both (especially part3) have been nowhere near close to surpassing the origonal! Its unique blend of horror and gore has seen that it is to this day famed as one of the most well known zombie/horrors of its kind!
The blood in this film is also well known for bieng as thick as jelly! And looking like jelly! And bieng the colour of (strawberry) jelly! Whatever it is it isnt blood! But the more the better! And The Evil Dead doesnt dissapoint!
And now it comes in this amazing set! Not only does itr come in the coolest box a DVD has ever came in (this reffers to you even if you dont even like gory horrors), it is also packed with loads of extras!
For all gore fans and NOT FOR 'ANTI GORE' PERSONS OR HATERS OF CHEESY B-MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars GIVE ME SOME SUGAR BABY /This edition did it/.......2005-10-07

It is all about the packaging, and this is one of the best Anchor Bay packages, if not the best at all, and the August/2005 release of The Evil Dead - Book of the Dead comes as a 2dvd set with the second disc inserted along with booklet into the paper holder on one of the pages of the book. The 2nd disc contains the movie RUNNING TIME starring Bruce Campbell, it is a 66 minutes long feature shot in one continuos shot, /such as A.Hitchcock's The Rope /USA 1948/,English:DD2.0+DD5.1+DTS5.1/
There is already a BOOK OF THE DEAD edition of the second EVIL DEAD /Evil Dead 2 - Dead by Dawn 1987/, currently available only in the USA, it has a new design /face on the book now has teeth/ and it is supposed to have a VOICE CHIP /like Shrek 2/ activated by poking into the right eye /a scream or something should come out/.
So long ASH fanatics and give it up for Mr.Tom SULLIVAN, the genious who designed both books and all the stuff in the evil dead movies. G R O O V Y

5 out of 5 stars The first step to a trilogy of pure brilliance........2004-04-23

What a film! This is the first of three brilliant horror movies by theinfamous Sam Raimi. Bruce Campbell is a star and you cant help but lovehis unlucky yet unintended comical nature. This film is basically the sameas Evil Dead 2, you could call it the original Evil Dead 2 but a more fullversion. This film not only frightened its early eighties audience, italso amused them and Raimi always said he would remake the film on abigger budget, hence, Evil Dead 2. Definately a film to watch. BruceCampbell delivers a great performance in a Jim Carrey meets Freddie Krugertype of way and what great directing from the superb Raimi. Buy it, watchit and then watch it again.Classic!

5 out of 5 stars Grueling horror at it's best!.......2008-02-07

This is Sam Raimi's feature film debut, and he couldn't have made it any more perfect! This film is over the top gruesome zombie horror at it's best! The movie was made simply because Raimi and friends thought it would be a cool flick. The film became a cult classic and still no matter how dated, is fun to watch. The acting isn't amazing (although Bruce Campbell gives a good preformance) but what do you expect from a B-movie? It's the puss-oozing, carnage enthused, demon posessed zombies that make the film so badass! It's shockingly putrid and fans like myself would have it no other way. I'm not sure if this is the full uncut original version or edited for UMD but either way it's a great purchase!

4 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST "VIDEO NASTYS"........ON UMD !! !! !!.......2006-02-11

The Evil Dead is a great film and is one of my favorite video nastys! The awful special effects and ivers of jelly-like blood make this film unique and way better than any of the sequels!
For an old B-movie there is some decent acting (Bruce Campbell in particular) but not anything too great. The story is very good and reminds people that it isnt the budjet or acting in a film that makes it a great movie!
If you like zombie films then buy this on UMD but if youre not then youll probably be better off leaving this one out!

Amazon.co.uk Review

In the Autumn of 1979, Sam Raimi and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Tennessee to make a little movie called The Evil Dead. When they play the tape, evil forces are unleashed, and one by one the friends are possessed. Wouldn't you know it, the only way to kill a "deadite" is by total bodily dismemberment, and soon the blood starts to fly. Raimi injects tremendous energy into this simple plot, using the claustrophobic set, disorientating camera angles and even the graininess of the film stock itself to create an atmosphere of dread, punctuated by a relentless series of jump-out-of-your-seat shocks. Much of the film's energy is supplied by the "Raimi-cam", a gliding, swooping, rushing camera that suggests a dislocated, otherworldly point of view while injecting a lively if spooky fleetness to the pace.
