Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A classic horror.......2008-03-15

The Fog is simply a classic horror film. I saw this in my childhood and it left a big impression on me. When watched today it appears a bit low budget, but nevertheless this is still a great movie.

The film is based around a small coastal town and a revenge mission from the darkness of time. There's a fair bit of violence here but I wouldn't consider The Fog to be a slasher movie like many of counterparts which followed in the 80s and 90s. Instead, this is a good old fashioned horror film with a story. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars One of Carpenter's most atmospheric films.......2007-12-24

'The Fog' may be slow in parts and it's characters may be less interesting than his other films, but John Carpenter is on top form in terms of creating mood and tension.

From the outset, the film is set-up as a bedtime ghost story and the opening sequence with John Houseman is arguably the finest moment in the film and from Carpenter's whole career. As an old sailor tells his spooky tale to a bunch of kids, the camera pans over across the dark and silent bay and from here on in it's grim.

A ship of lepers are led into the rocks by the small town residents and decades later return to wreak revenge on the community, disguised by the fog in which they crashed. The basic story works for this type of old-school horror, but the film drags at times and many feel that the climax never really pays off. However, this is still a classic work from Carpenter in his heydey and still a damn site scarier than some of today's so-called horror films.

3 out of 5 stars NOT TOO BAD.......2007-10-26

Starts well but like so many horror films, when you see what caused you to hide behind the sofa, you might prefer Eastenders.

The story is good and quite tense in places. Worth a watch but there's better of the genre to be seen.

4 out of 5 stars CLASSIC GHOST STORY.......2007-08-06

It's the 100th Anniversary of the death of a horrific maritime disaster for Antonio Bay, and as night-fall approaches, a mysterious fog-bank rolls in. A fishing trawler is lost in the fog, and Nick Castle, (Tom Atkins) is assigned to go find it while the rest of the town prepares for the celebration. When he finds the trawler, he brings it back into town, which has been experiencing supernatural occurrences all day. He goes to Kathy Williams, (Janet Leigh) who finds out the truth about the town's celebration. That night, the ghosts attack the town, hiding inside of the fog-bank, leaving DL Stevie Wayne, (Adrienne Barbeau) to lead the surviving towns-members into the local church and safety from the ghosts.

The Good News: As this is one of the early films made from Carpenter's early career, which was filled with classics, this one is also in that class. It's the most underrated of his classics, and features so many Carpenter-isms: the beautiful shots, the great characters, and a classic old-school feel. The shots in here are simply marvelous, and it looks quite spectacular. This is right on par with his best movies, and it really will appeal to the cinematic fans out there. The characters are so normal for these films, and as such doesn't need to be explained in here. Also, the film is just dripping with an old-school feel. There is a feel in here to try to replicate the old ghost stories with the film. The way they come back into the action is great, and it has an old-school feel to it, which is what these films should have. It's a pretty classic-horror film aura around it, and it proves that it doesn't need a bucket-full of gore to be disturbing, which is shocking considering when it came out. It speaks volumes about the power of the story and script to be like that and still be great. Of course, most of that goes to the special effects in the film, which are quite innovative and work quite well. The sights of the ghostly fog creeping around buildings, down streets, congregating in specific areas and the story about it that is spoken makes it that much more powerful a source. The opening is pretty great and spooky, and it builds loads of tension quickly.

The Bad News: Sometimes, I feel as though it been a little faster. There were plenty of occasions where the story got bogged down because of the high amount of side-plots all needing their breathing space, that probably didn't need to have as much time as they did. This is merely a problem because there is a lot going on, and certain subplots had a little more weight to them than others, and so by giving precedence to one over the other, it gave the film a little bit of a slower pace and an overall convoluted atmosphere.

The Final Verdict: This is one of Carpenter's best films, and it features a little bit of something for everyone. A slow pace isn't the worst thing a movie can be accused of. Carpenter fans will no doubt love this one, and all fans of the old-school horror feel should track this one down at once.

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully filmed horror movie with a bedtime story feel.......2007-07-04

I love this film and out of all John Carpenters earlier films, Escape From New York, Assault On Precinct 13 etc. of which I am also a fan of, this is my favourite of his along with Halloween and The Thing, but this is only because I am a huge horror fan and so I am biased towards these particular three.

I just love the way in which this is filmed and the ghost town like seaside location of Antonio Bay is absolutely beautiful. I think that John Carpenter himself loved this location so much that he bought a house somewhere nearby and who can blame him, I am sure that it is in the documentary or commentary on this DVD that he mentions it. Like I said I love the way this is filmed, there is something that is really unique about it, for example the way in which it begins with John Houseman sat around a fire on the beach telling the children the story of The Fog, this to me gives this film the feeling of a cosy bedtime horror story but in a creepy way. I also really like Adrienne Barbeau in this and the isolation of her job as the lighthouse DJ, this really adds to the atmosphere because of her view of the sea.

Without going into detail of the story, this as with all John Carpenter films at his best, all starts off with nothing much happening as it is all about atmosphere and clever camera work but has the film goes on, it gets more and more tense and claustrophobic right until the end and this is why I love John Carpenter at his best, it is just a shame that he didn't make a few more horror films to match this and the others I have already mentioned. Another thing I really love about this film is the soundtrack as with Halloween by John Carpenter himself and I am not just talking about the main theme but also the music that plays during the drive that Adrienne Barbeau makes to the lighthouse in particular.

This is another one of those films that I love because I never get bored of watching it and it is because of this that it is one of my all time favourite horror films. I was a little sad to hear of the death of Debra Hill who died of cancer (she played a big part in making this film alongside John Carpenter) not long after I bought this special edition version, I think she was only fifty something. For those of you that don't already know, she also worked alongside him on Halloween and she also played a bit part in that film, the opening scene as young Michael Myers when he takes his mask off and takes the knife out of the kitchen was her hands, RIP Debra Hill.

If you have never seen this but you have seen John Carpenters other early films and liked the atmosphere of them, then I am sure you will really like this also.

This is a definite must for any Barbeau collector. She keeps up her high standards found in "Swamp Thing" (1982) and "Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death" (1989). This film also is designed to add to your John Carpenter collection.

Fog night and slow pacing will drive you up the wall. The unseen is just as spooky as the seen. There is gold, revenge, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Janet Leigh. What, want more? What if we throw in John Houseman and Hal Holbrook? Still more? There is a lot more. But don't get greedy. Sit back and enjoy what you can see in The Fog.

5 out of 5 stars A truely scary film!.......2004-03-02

I was about 10 when I watched this film for the first time, and being a child with an over active imagination who's family owned a lighthouse you can imagine how it affected me. Or rather lol how it affected my mum and dad. This is a very scary film if you watch it with the lights out on your own. I’m glad that I have finally tracked it down on DVD, now I won't have to watch the video recorded off sci-fi channel that still has the adverts from like 10 yrs ago in. The music is especially good and sets the mood for the scene in a remarkably eerie way.

Anyway buy this film if you want to watch a classic scary horror film.

4 out of 5 stars ATMOSPHERIC GHOST STORY..........2004-02-29

This vintage John Carpenter film was made in collaboration with Debra Hill, who with Carpenter was responsible for the runaway success of "Halloween". When "The Fog" was first released, it was met with a fairly lukewarm reception. It has since gone on to achieve some acclaim, though it has never reached the heights of commercial success touched upon by "Halloween", though, then again, few films have.

"The Fog" is a highly atmospheric ghost story. The ghosts manifest themselves on the stroke of midnight, as the fishing village of Antonio Bay gets ready to celebrate its centennial. As the midnight hour rolls in, so does an unearthly fog that begins to engulf the whole town. It is a fog that enshrouds of the ghosts of those whose ship was lured to the rocky coast, only to find itself dashed to bits on the rocks, causing all aboard to plummet to the nether regions of Davy Jones' locker. These ghosts are now hell bent on seeking revenge for their fate on the inhabitants of Antonio bay.

The special effects in the film are excellent, as is the musical score composed by none other than John Carpenter himself. This is for the most part a subtle, creepy film, highlighted by a stellar cast. If you are looking for a blood and gore slasher film, this is not the film for you. If, however, you enjoy a terse, tightly written script, as well as a pulse pounding musical score, then you will enjoy this highly atmospheric, ghost story. I originally saw this film in the theatre when it was first released and still remember the effectiveness of the fog rolling across the huge silver screen and the pulse pounding, musical score, which was such an excellent accompaniment to the film. Time has not diminished its power.

This DVD provides the viewer with pristine visuals and clear audio. It is a fully loaded DVD that includes two documentaries, one of which was made at the time of the film's release and one made recently. It is interesting to see and hear some of those who were involved with this film as they appeared then and as they look now. One may also elect to view the film in either full screen or letterbox format.

5 out of 5 stars SCAAAAAARY!!!!!!!.......2003-06-29

John Carpenter's "The Fog" really is a classic. John Carpenter directed it after he did Halloween, and it is yet another terrifying masterpiece. The Fog is a chilling tail about six sailors who drowned in a shipwreck and return to avenge their deaths by murdering six people one hundred years later, in Antonio Bay, California. But they only come at night when they are in the presence of an unearthly glowing fog that drifts in across the sea. The fog sweeps through the town and the night is alive with the screams of its terrified victims.
This film really is one of the scariest made and if you enjoy cowering behind a cushion, you should buy John Carpenter's "The Fog" now.
