This terrifying adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel was directed by shock maestro Brian De Palma for maximum, no-holds-barred effect. Sissy Spacek stars as Carrie White, the beleaguered daughter of a religious kook (Piper Laurie) and a social outcast tormented by her cruel, insensitive classmates. When her rage turns into telekinetic powers, however, school's out in every sense of the word. De Palma's horrific climax in a school gym lingers forever in the memory, though the film is also built upon Spacek's remarkable performance and Piper Laurie's outlandishly creepy one. John Travolta has a small part as a thug, De Palma's future wife, Nancy Allen, is his girlfriend, and Amy Irving makes her screen debut as one of the girls giving Carrie a hard time.--Tom Keogh

ONE OF THE BETTER KING ADAPTIONS.......2007-11-02
Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) a senior in High School, is considered a social outcast and pretty much ignored by her peers. Her home-life is even worse. Her religious mother Margaret (Piper Laurie) is convinced Carrie has become a sinning woman and treats her like a captive. When Carrie goes through her first period in the locker room after gym, the whole school begins to humiliate her to no end, including popular Chris (Nancy Allen) who turns on Carrie and revokes her prom tickets from her. Margaret is pleased at that, as it means Carrie can stay home and not become corrupted by the sinning going on at prom. Carrie thinks she is being unfair to her, and she tells friend Sue Snell, (Amy Irving) who agrees to lend her boyfriend Tommy (William Katt) to escort her to the prom. Once there, Chris makes Carrie's humiliation so extreme that it leads to a shocking revelation about Carrie that no one at the school wishes would've been discovered.
The Good News: This is a little more graphic than I remembered it was. We get lots of impaling, a couple of people set on fire, and other such graphic happenings. There isn't a whole lot of that I want to spoil, so that will be up to the viewer to find out. We also get a lot of great action scenes towards the end. Everyone knows that the prom is one of the highlights of the genre, so that part is no doubt a part many will want to see. It's also got a 70s feel to it, the way it is filmed and the way it is executed, that you become completely fascinated by it and don't want to turn it off since it might show something you don't want to miss. It is action-packed and full of ingenious surprises that keep you on the edge of your seat and wondering what will happen next. This is done greatly by the perfect cast assembled. Piper Laurie looks and sounds like such a complete nut that you actually begin to want Carrie to finish her off. Her rantings and ravings are perfectly done that makes the viewers sympathize against her. She plays the part so well that the performance is etched in your mind for a long time afterward. Her house is like a containment camp for the religiously devout: crucifixes in every possible location, "Last Supper" paintings placed in ominous places, and her special confessional is just weird. All of this is building up tension, and it actually succeeds from others that haven't before. It's also great at building tension earlier, when we see what happens to her at school. That is some of the scariest images of a high school ever committed to screen, and it really makes you feel for her. The initial bits used to show her gift are also some creepy images, and the events are pretty creepy. This is more of a character-based movie, so there's not much else until the spectacular third act.
The Bad News: The main thing I want to say is that it takes a long time to get going. There is at least a long portion of the film that takes place before we get anything remotely interesting. That can be an eternity for those that like faster moving films. There are also so few jumps that after repeated viewings, it loses some of its initial impact. The film is a little dated so it shows itself very quickly. Also, some of the religious discussions can be a bit much for those that aren't that versed in religion or don't believe in it. The religious aspect of the film is a large part of the film, and if you don't believe in what is presented, it can lead to some unpleasant experiences.
The Final Verdict: A little overrated, but that doesn't take anything away from it. A little slow in the beginning like all of King's works are, but there is a lot of good stuff towards the ending. King fans are encouraged to check it out, as are those that like the 70s feel for horror.
Don't mess with her !!!.......2007-09-29
At first, this movie seems to be your typical high school film. We're introduced at once to Carrie (Sissy Spacek) and the hellish life that she lives. Everyone at school picks on her and make her life a living hell. As if that wasn't bad enough, she lives with her mother (Piper Laurie) who's a religious fanatic, thinks everything is a sin and regularly locks Carrie in the closet. You can't help but sympathize for her.
Unknown to everyone, however, Carrie has telekinetic powers. At first, her powers are really underplayed in the film. By the time the prom scene approaches though, they become more and more prominent. Carrie uses them against her mother while waiting for her prom date and then she uses them at the prom in a very destructive manner. The whole prom scene is both scary and sad. Sad because Carrie finally has her moment where it looks like she's finally been accepted only to have it all end in humiliation. And it's scary to see her powers come full circle in such a destructive and deadly manner. The scene where she slowly walks out of the gym as it burns is a really chilling moment.
While this is a scary movie that has earned its place as a horror classic, it's also a really sad movie as well. Carrie's life is miserable from the beginning right to the end. Watching Carrie kill all of her tormentors at the prom is every high school misfit's dream come true. Carrie has her revenge, but at what price? The DVD,perhaps...
De Palma's Standout Creation of King's Carrie.......2007-07-16
The only flaw of this Brian Depalma vehicle is...dare I say this...the story? Yup, telekinetic devil child? It's certainly not boring but I almost can't possibly grant it a five star rating. I'm going to anyway. King's first novel is not his best, but it is still very good. I will assert that the film is actually better and Carrie is one of the best adaptations of a King novel ever made into a film. My hats off to Depalma for creating one of the scariest films of all time in the process. I'm a huge horror fan, so Carrie has quite a few things to take into account for your own tastes. It's a bit dated and requires some imagination from the viewer...I'm probably preaching the quire here anyway.
Most people my age have only seen the edited television version which is on about three or four times every Halloween. The made for television remake was a horrorshow in a different way because it came close to ruining the credibility of its original. Depalma holds back his amazing technical abilities intentionally and builds this tale of revenge and justice up for one of the most climatic sequences ever made. "They're all gonna laugh at you" rings in Carrie's ears after a bucket of pig's blood is dropped on her head...the music goes from extremely happy and glorious to tense and terrifying, the lighting goes from normal to blood red like Carries now blood soaked appearance. We go from feeling sorry for her to feeling sorry for the kids who we thought for one minute might deserve what's coming to them in a few moments. What follows is quite possible the most brilliantly filmed horror sequence ever. Split screening and panning from Sissy Spacek's amazingly tense eyes and face to her victims soon to be lifeless bodies. Then the fire comes in and we realize that these kids have unknowingly unleashed hell on earth. The film keeps going down a very dark road and doesn't disappoint.
Anyway, it's one of the greatest horror films of all time and is totally unforgettable. In the long run its films that you remember fully that stay intact as classics and Carrie is certainly one of them.
creepy Carrie delivers.......2007-06-07
This movie has always stayed with me. Yes it's rather dated, and the effects compared to today's are lame, but still it conveys a certain level of genuine creepiness that, well, current horrors rarely deliver. I suppose this comes from the music, Brian de Palma's direction, and the focus on Carrie's relationship with her Christian fundamentalist mother, played wonderfully by Piper Laurie. Ultimately the tension and abuse Carrie has had to endure both at school from bullies, and at home at the hands of her crazed mother, culminate in perhaps one of the most famous scenes in movie history. Its build-up is just as amazing, as it ratchets up the tension immensely to the final "bloody" act.
So, put away your brash, overboard modern day Hollywood horrors ladened with gore and nothing else. If you want a real horror movie that stays with you, that affects you in ways you might not understand, get this movie.

Carrie is a film that is directed by brian de palma and based on a stephen king novel so all of that isnt a bad start.
The film deals with bullying and what can happen and clearly what people that have been bullied wish could happen if they had telekinetic powers which carrie develops and can use when she is annoyed.Sissy Spacek plays carrie who is a teenager who is shy, socially rejected and awkward and lives with her over zealous christian fanatic mother who bullies carrie in her own way as well.
Carrie deals with it all in her pomp but something is building inside and the results are manic to say the least, featuring a cameo by john travolta ,this is cracking stuff, and is truly a film where you are praying that the bad guys get punished and whether they do or not will be known to you if you have seen this,
