3 out of 5 stars THERE ARE WORSE FILMS OUT THERE.......2007-11-02

Ellie, (Christina Ricci) and her brother Jimmy, (Jesse Eisenberg) are involved in a savage accident, and return with strange bites and scratches. As they try to recollect what happened to then, they start to realize that they are suddenly have strange abilities that they never had before. Ellie isn't too convinced this is happening, but Jimmy does, and his attempts to convincer her go unnoticed. When Ellie's boyfriend Jake, (Joshua Jackson) opens a new club in Los Angeles, the werewolf crashes the party, forcing everyone to deal with the creature instead of their personal problems.

The Good News: Though some may not like this one all that much, this one wasn't all that bad. I'll get to the rating later, as that's a cause here, but that was one of the few things I didn't like about it. The film does have a few great scenes of suspense that are classic Craven. The opening attack is the prime example, as the surroundings, the action, and the camera angles , combined together, make for a great scene. The jump at the end is one of the attack is one perfectly timed one as well. There is a great stalk sequence inside a parking garage that also works beautifully, and it provides the best scares and moments in the film. It's pretty clever how it works out. The attacks are pretty brutal, so it can be a joy to see some of the attacks play out.

The Bad News: Well, the film is 15, and I know that is some kind of impetus on many films. It never allows the film to be what it really can, be the all-out gore-fest and brutal werewolf film that it so desperately wanted to be. The attacks are brutal, the suspense is high, the main thing missing is the gory, brutal attacks, which unfortunately handicaps the film. The CGI used for the werewolf is a major distraction, and it seems to work against it more often than not.

The Final Verdict: The film does try hard, and it occasionally does rise above the rating restriction, but several times it does hamper the film. If you have preconceived notions about the film's rating, then go for the unrated edition, but werewolf fans owe it to at least give this one a chance. Fans of "Scream" will find a lot to like here as well.

1 out of 5 stars WHY?.......2007-10-26

There was a single moment during the film where i looked up from reading a brochure for guttering, a scene with a werewolf woman attacking somebody. I don't know who was being attacked or why, or indeed who the werewolf woman was. I DID, however, order uPVC gutters for my porch.

This was a gripper from the moment i switched it OFF.

1 out of 5 stars A real dog. Get it? Dog? That's werewolf humour!.......2007-06-06

Brother and sister Jimmy and Ellie have just been attacked by a large and mysterious wild animal. Next thing you know, Ellie is stalking around sniffing things, while nerdy Jimmy comes over all confident and tries to pash the school hottie. They've been cursed with the Mark Of The Beast, you see, which is a fanciful way of saying they're turning into werewolves.

What you get with Cursed is a film with an infamously troubled production history, beset as it was by re-writes, re-shoots, and a major re-edit to secure a lower rating on its inital release. Consequently, scenes don't feel as though they connect to one another, Shannon Elizabeth's part has been hacked down to a virtual cameo, and Joshua Jackson pops in and out of the story as though he was added as an afterthought. The film narrowly avoids degenerating into incoherence, but this one is still a disjointed, unsatisying affair without enough blood and scares to perk things up.

All in all, there's not much to recommend this disappointing effort from the Scream team of writer Kevin Williamson and director Wes Craven. I enjoyed Jessie Eisenberg's funny turn as the dweeby Jimmy, but that's about it. Unless you want to count the werewolf who used the 'S' word and gave the finger, which I guess would make it a swearwolf. Did you see that? That was more werewolf humour!

1 out of 5 stars Wes Craven at his worst.......2006-09-17

Where do we begin? Firstly, awful acting. Secondly, rubbish special effects. Thirdly, doesn't make any sense!
Christina and her bro are cursed after being attacked by a werewolf, they only got a few cuts! Then, Zipper, their dog, starts being like a wolf. Is He cursed? I don't know? He wasn't attacked by a were wolf so there is a muddled storyline.
Anyway, this film is awful and i would only recommend it if you like this sort of thing. Avoid like the plague!!!

1 out of 5 stars I felt I had been CURSED watching this..........2006-01-25

My, how the great have stumbled. Wes Craven serves up this soul-less, blood-less, talent-less piece of celluloid where the only scary thing on offer is the acting.

The completely unoriginal story (werewolf stalking LA - a huge leap of imagination there) coupled with a endlessly dull snails pace, and unintended laughs, make this film just one big cliche from start to finish. Gypsies included!

Rick Baker is on werewolf make-up duties, but even his usual above standard effects are on holiday here. The werewolf looks shoddy - whether it's CGI or a man in a suit.

And the nods to other classic horror films are just so blatant it's a wonder why Craven even bothered. This film can't live up to those horror masterpieces.

4 out of 5 stars Lycnathropy in Los Angeles.......2005-10-18

My favourite Lycanthropy film is still "The Wolf Man", made back in 1941. Later films were not very good until 2000 when "Ginger Snaps" was made. This one is nearly as good.

The European version only lasts for 84 minutes whereas the Unrated version from the USA runs for 97 minutes. I was very pleased to have bought this version from a dealer in Puerto Rico. I do not know what was left out of the shorter version but I would certainly suggest you go for the longer one.

I have no problems in playing DVDs from the USA as I bought a Yakumo multi-region player from Amazon.

My favourite quote from it is "There is no such thing as safe sex with a werewolf".

3 out of 5 stars We expected a better werwolf movie from Williamson & Craven.......2005-07-22

If Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven want to write and direct an R-rated werewolf movie, then you would think with their respective track records they should be allowed to do it. But that is not what happened with "Cursed," and the studio edited it down to a PG-13 version. Whatever their motivation, I am inclined to think that avoiding having a hit like the R-rated "Scream" trilogy was not their goal. Still, the film Williamson and Craven created was butchered, they washed their hands of the film, and "Cursed" ended up on the shelf for a while.

Ellie Myers (Christina Ricca) is a segment producer for Craig Kilborn (Craig Kilborn), who is driving home with her brother, Jimmy (Jesse Eisenberg) when there is an accident. While trying to rescue a woman (Shannon Elizabeth), they are attacked by a werewolf. The woman ends up dead, while Ellie and Jimmy are now at risk for turning into beasts. We know this and Jimmy suspects it, but Ellie is going to take some convincing. After all, it was dark and there was a forest, so who knows what is really out there in the night. Then there is the question of who is the werewolf, because you know it has to be somebody that Ellie knows and there is either an obvious suspect or one of the more blatant red herrings in horror movie history (take your pick).

I did not see "Cursed" in the theater and I have no interest in seeing the "rated" version, so I cannot speak to how big of a crime against humanity can be pinned on the studio. For that matter, I am not absolutely sure that this unrated version reflects the vision of Williamson and Craven. What I can say is that I do not find "Cursed" to be an inventive revitalization of the werewolf film, which, I assume, was supposed to be the goal here. The problem is that Jimmy is a lot more interesting than Ellie, and is the main character. What happens between Jimmy and Bo (Milo Ventimiglia) the school bully is a lot more interesting than what anything happening with Ellie. If anything, she is a bit denser than most movie heroines, even when things are laid out for her. Another part of the problem is that since we are talking Kevin Williamson we are expecting the script to play with the rules of the werewolf game a bit more than this one. Instead, the pivotal issue in the film has to do with the metallic composition of a picture frame (then again, if you had to find something silver in your household right this very minute, what could YOU come up with?).

But the two key elements of any werewolf movie are, first, what does the beast look like, and, second, how tragic the target human happens to be. The werewolf in "Cursed" is okay looking, but Ellie is not a particularly tragic figure and that ends up being more important. I know because after watching this circa 2005 film the recommendation I want to make is for fans of the werewolf genre to go check out the "Ginger Snaps" trilogy, where the Fitzgerald sisters are a lot more interesting. Or if you really want something innovative involving werewolves go check out "Brotherhood of the Wolf" ("Le Pacte des loups"). Because whether you compare "Cursed" to other werewolf films or the "Scream" trilogy, you are going to be disappointed.
