5 out of 5 stars How the West was Won , A tribute to all the westerns.......2003-11-14

Way back when they could afford it(1962), under the name of Cinerama "How the West was Won" came to be.It employed several directors, and many of the great actors of its time ,and was shot in the tri/camera system know as Cinerama, and sterophonic sound. It was and still is an impressive piece of film making although some of its impact is lost on the medium of video. If like me you are a fan of the western none of "How the West was Won " will be lost on you ,from its magnificent musical score to the story ,whose telling ,of the fortunes of the Rawlins/Prescott family through several generations, and many adventures,Its just great !watch and enjoy

Countryman [1983]

Amazon.co.uk Review

A contemporary Jamaican fable with a remarkable, out-of-nowhere hero, Countryman is the story of a Rastafarian fisherman, Countryman (credited to "Himself"), who rescues a marijuana-smuggling, American couple from an airplane crash. The good deed doesn't end there, however. An ambitious and power-hungry, emerging despot, Colonel Sinclair (Basil Keane), hypes the significance of the crash to impress political leaders, maintaining the smugglers are, in fact, enemy agents plotting against the government. Thus Countryman's new friends are in great danger, and he keeps them out of harm's way between smoking spliffs and putting up a preternaturally agile fight against Sinclair's weapons-wielding thugs. The film exudes an infectious, contact-high energy, and Countryman's gravity-defying stunts should please fans of similarly spectacular martial-arts movies such as Hero. The soundtrack to this 1982 movie features some of the greats of Jamaican reggae, including Bob Marley, Toots and the Maytals, and Steel Pulse. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack to bad bad film.......2008-03-15

Being a 70s film with cult status is no excuse....the soundtrack is superb, the film is truly aweful. Boring, boring, boring with poor acting and a flimsy plot. My advice would be....buy the soundtrack and a big bag of ganja and enjoy.

Did I mention it was boring?

5 out of 5 stars Country roads, take me home!.......2007-08-01

One certainly wouldn't recommend this film for the plotline or, indeed for the acting, which is almost universally comically bad. This is a document of a place in time, Jamaica in the late seventies, politics, nature and culture all portrayed with stunning realism.

The story follows 'Countryman' a simple rastafarian fisherman who rescues an American couple when their light plane crashes in a remote swamp. Facing an election, and with public opinion swinging against them, the government seizes on the incident as an opportunity to make political capital by portraying them as CIA agents smuggling weapons to opposition supporters. Somewhat oblivious to the politics, Countryman hides them and helps them escape their army pursuers.

One might think the plot had been lifted straight out of 'Tarzan' if it weren't such a faithful reflection of the climate of political intrigue and violence that characterized the bloody struggle between the JLP and the PNP in late seventies Jamaica. In fact the involvement of the CIA, publicly denied by Kissinger at the time, has since been confirmed on the record by retired CIA operatives.

Countryman (credited as 'himself') is superb, injecting some depth to his part which is conspicuously lacking among the other actors. However, it is the scenery and (some ghastly supernatural effects apart) the production that are the real stars. The atmosphere of rural Jamaica is caught as faithfully here as urban life is in 'The Harder They Come' and anyone who loves the country couldn't help but be deeply moved.

The soundtrack too is awesome, right up there with THTC as one of the ultimate documents of authentic Jamaican reggae.

So, cineasts need not apply. For lovers of Jamaica, five stars all the way. Irie.

5 out of 5 stars Countryman.......2006-06-11

This has to be the best film ever and I went to the UK premier, reggae has a vision, soul and a feeling with great images. The Music is special and the story not great but for photography, great soundtrack and a belief that you were there this is the best, enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Forget The Harder They Come!.......2004-12-23

This is the ultimate reggae lovers film! Forget the film, the plot is plausible but the music is the best! A celebration of what reggae should sound like, missing all the modern sell out cross overs, just pure roots. In a word 'Fantastic!'

5 out of 5 stars Great Film to watch.......2003-04-24

This film just puts you in the mood for a holiday in the sun, just listening to great music and chilling out. I am currently looking for a new copy, only a friend of mine let her dad watch the film and he said it made him think of home. As he was an OAP, I let him keep the film.

5 out of 5 stars more than a documentary, a beautiful story.......2006-10-25

This just blew me away when I saw it on television a while ago. I think it's from the seventies, certainly has that feel about it. It is just soooo beautiful the way they portray all the animals. I laughed out loud several times and even fought back some tears at a heart-breaking scene involving baby pelicans. It just shows you nature but from a human angle, treating the animals as if they were people. As I said, beautiful, sometimes very funny, very accessible for children (although sometimes a little sad) and just fun to watch. Who knew monkey's could get drunk from eating rotten fruit?
Just such a shame that it's region 1. I really NEED this in a region 2 encoding.

5 out of 5 stars Everest, (Miramax).......2004-07-25

Obtained from Canada via Amazon UK as there seems to be no PAL version available, the first test was to see that the DVD would play on multi standard equipment, which it did. Thankfully so, as this high budget production filmed in May 1996 has given us a really top quality programme about Everest. Good scene setting before the climbing starts, and then breathtaking visuals when the climbers were on the mountain. The role that the team who made the film played in helping those caught up in the May 10th disaster comes over well. With that enormous budget at risk it is heartening to see that was put second to trying to help save human life when the chips were really down. The superb quality of the filming continues right up to the summit successes, which is perhaps no surprise as those wonderful Sherpas took not only their usual loads up Everest, but also the 42 pound IMAX camera! For the summit that allowed just one 90 second film cartridge to be shot, every second of which is said to be in the 45 minute programme. There is more than that length of extremely interesting Bonus material which includes an extended interview with Beck Weathers, a survivor from May 10th, who made what may be one of the most miraculous "returns from the dead" seen in any walk of life. Watching that interview it wasn't just Beck who was choking back the tears. Excellent video diaries from the three main climbers are included within the Bonus material as is sufficient material deleted from the main programme to raise the question as to why it wasn't used to extend the 45 minute finished product by a few more minutes. And that is the only possible way I can see this programe could have been improved.

1 out of 5 stars You bunch of Sickos !!!!.......2008-02-24

Any one who enjoys this is sick!! When i was young and started my love for movies i was in to all genres and had a look a some of the video nasty range or grindhouse films. This one was one of the last i watched and belive me if it had been the fist i would not of continude. There is one scene in the movie where they get a large turtle and pull off its shell and beat and stab it. Make no mistake the creature is reall and any one who takes plesure in that kind of thing is sick!!!!!!. I would have give this ess than 1 satar if Amazon would have let me

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and a well made film; classic of the genre.......2008-02-04

I will skip the synopis as all viewers will be aware of the story. I watched this film in 1981 at a friends, just before it was listed as a video nasty; could not really remember, so was hesitant in purchasing a copy. The copy I ordered was NOT the one I had choosen, NOT from Amazon, but another retailer; Amazon I shall stay.

Well,............. I watched it all through, UNCUT version. What I liked about this version, was when a scene was due, which was cut from most versions, you had a animated little skull, with spear through it, to inform viewers that the next scene would normally have been deleted; viewers have a choice to view, or look away.

I cant understand why some reviewists have slammed the quality and special effects; remember, there was NO CGI until the 90s !! This is a B-Movie, so acting is a little wobbly at times; this was NOT an oscar nominated film.

The camera work was very good, scenery beautiful and viewing the second film reel was almost believable, and this was before Blair Witch. Cannibal Holocaust is FAR superior than Blair Witch, remember both were on low budgets.

Yes, plenty of gore to keep the real horror genre fans clued to the screen, watching the first reel, yes, there are flaws with the special effects, but hey, this is a low budget film, but, viewing the second reel ? scarred the hell out of me, I did not know whether I was watching a snuff film, as the filming and ` special effects' looked so reel, and the actors when being killed off, seemed to reel at times.

The only thing I was unhappy about, is the real life animal killings, I liked to scarred and thrilled with movies, BUT NOT !! at the expense of animals/wildlife. The only thing I will ask about this, were the animals consumed by the actors ? as budget was low. If they were, then my condonment loosen's slighty, but if they WERE killed, just to shock views, then please please do NOT use animals for killing in any film, just leave it to your geographical documentries.

Thought provoking, challenging, powerful and at times, shocking, but a classic in it's own right.

Those with delicate tummies, and dont like much blood in films, stay WELL CLEAR and leave for the fanatics.

3 out of 5 stars SHOCKING!!!!!!!!!.......2008-01-17

Watched this a couple of days ago and I can honestly say it was one of the most disturbing films I have ever seen. It's not amazingly gory but the real killing of the animals in the film is shocking and cruel as are the rape scenes(but remember the one of many points the director is trying to make: even the most "civilized" of people can be savage and hide the true extent of their savagery through the eye of the camera - errr....War on Iraq springs to mind here!). Not sure if I watched the complete uncut version but I can say it did show something between the legs of a woman in the first rape scene! This is not a movie I could watch over an over again as the rape and animal slaughter scenes are intense BUT I can assure you that you will get the message(s) first time unless you're a savage!

5 out of 5 stars the most disturbing film i have ever seen.......2008-01-07

i am not going to analyse the film in the depth that some reviewers have done here... i will put it simply, if u have a strong stomach and like extreme horror films then this is really unmissable...if not then steer away! great cinematography and one of the best fitting pieces of music in horror films i hv ever heard... plus seeing the idea behind blair witch project in a film that is 20yrs older is a revelation itself .. forget all the zombie, evil spirits/gorefest, slasher type of hollywood films.. this is the real deal.. u ll never forget it

4 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC.......2007-10-26

Following a high profile news group disappearance, anthropologist Prof. Harold Monroe, (Robert Kerman) is sent to the Amazon to find them, and along with trackers Chaco Losojos, (Salvatore Basile) and Felipe Ocanya, (Ricardo Fuentes) go into the jungle. While searching, they find a small tribe of warriors in the jungle, known as the Yanomamo, and are accepted into the tribe. He finds that the Yanomamo have canisters that the film group, consisting of director Alan Yates, (Carl Gabriel Yates) his girlfriend Faye Daniels, (Francesca Ciardi) and cameramen Mark Tomaso, (Luca Barbareschi) and Jack Anders, (Perry Pirkanen) had left behind. Taking the footage back to New York, he screens the footage and becomes appalled at seeing the cruelty and torture the group inflicts in the film. As they get more and more violent towards the tribesmen in the jungle, he senses that they will turn and seek revenge, all culminating in the foreboding last reel of footage to be screened.

The News: This is one of the best horror films around and the cream of the crop of the cannibal sub-genre. Simply, what gives the film it's power and enjoyment is the fact that this is one of the strongest stories ever told. The first half of the film is a normal jungle adventure, replete with the viewing of the native rites, acceptance into the tribe, and other assorted jungle adventures. It isn't ground-breaking but it gets the job done, keeping the viewer focused on what's happening and setting up the trump card that is the final half. This is the main footage of the lost crew and is a whole different story. Consisting of raw, hand-held images shot from two cameras by a quartet of film-makers as they callously tromp through the jungle, committing sexual and violent acts against the "mud people" and even offing an animal or two in the process. This is also where the film's heart comes into play, where it makes the valiant charge that civilized man is no more savage than the people out in the jungle. The great trick that this pulls off is that the film is essentially a non-violent protest that attacks the civilized man and the media for their ability to spin any story to a sensationalized account. This can only be possible with a peaceful tribe being assaulted by a rowdy and extreme outsider force, the camera-crew, coming in and destroying their way of life purely for ratings. Conducting extreme amounts of carnage, including setting fire to a series of huts and forcing the occupants to stay inside, raping villagers in full view of others and then reminding themselves to become serious and poignant because they're being filmed. This even occurs during the abortion sequence, where they visibly force the natives around so that the camera filming can get a better shot. They also are the main ones who dish out the animal violence, as they slaughter several creatures and the natives merely do one in a really quick shot. Aside from the ending retribution, all of the violence in the film is caused by the crew towards nature or the tribe, and as they are nearly all done in the last segment, this really helps to sell the message of the savage man and the media. Away from the message it makes, this is one of the greatest horror films around. It assembles a series of images that are both violent and disturbing, but in the end, they are no more graphic nor more violent than any other gore-fest. Instead, it is the tone and nature of the violence. Some of it is rawly primitive and all of it is unflinching in detail. Even more, this approach makes the viewer a participant in the carnage. As much as the lost film crew, it is the audience's demand for more blood, darker thrills, that drives the acts on screen. The gore gets extreme, as legs get severed, multiple rapes, a castration, a chest-cracking scene, eye-gouging, a woman impaled to the point of the stick coming out of her mouth, organ eating and so much more in here that are simply brutal. This brings up the biggest and most controversial segment of the film, which is the actual animal slaughter present. The on screen killing of animals is completely indefensible, of course, and are nothing more than a nauseating nature snuff film, the verisimilitude of these sequences causes the viewer to then question the reality of everything else on screen. Indeed, many of the more memorable moments come with the unnecessary torment and torture of innocent creatures, but such blatant abuse is a necessity. It sets up the whole potential premise of the film. When we see a pig being shot or a sea-turtle gutted and chopped up, the reaction is instant. They have instant impact, before being identified for their fake-ness. Since they allow the viewer to put up barriers and prepare ourselves for the next instance, the result is that it really happened. However, the cruelty obliterates any chance of becoming a credible social commentary. In no way, shape or form is murdering helpless creatures suitable for entertainment. What's most sickening about these scenes, is the way the actors behave, appearing to enjoy these barbaric acts. It makes the whole affair much more unsettling. Even still, this is one of the best films in the genre.

The Final Verdict: This is one of the hardest films to get into, but it's well-worth it, not just for the extreme gore and story, but for being a smart film as well. While the animal carnage is hard to get through, those who can will find a film with a lot to love, but that is one big obstacle in itself.

3 out of 5 stars Good dogs, but why let the cat let out of the bag so soon?.......2008-03-14

A good film essentially; a cast of characters you would be hard pressed to feel any sympathy for but this is not detrimental to the film. A group of young offenders go to a prison service owned remote island, a kind of outdoor team building/boot camp affairs. I did find it a bit unrealistic that half a dozen very dangerous offenders (murderer, bank robber, serial sex offender etc) would just be accompanied by one staff member, but small point.
They meet some females who are basically there for the same reason and the film revolves around an individual with an array of weapons and dogs hunting them down. Strangely I thought, the 'maniac' and his motive are revealed very early on, soon after the first killing which does take some of the suspense and guesswork out of it especially as there were another couple of strands which could have been used to keep the viewer guessing. Very watchable for what it is, has been compared to scum, dog soldiers and Lord of the flies but is not quite as good as any of those.
I would say be wary of another review that reveals the protaganist but it is revealed so prematurely anyway it probably wouldn't matter too much if you found out beforehand. All in all good effects, nothing wrong with the story and acting fine, worth a watch.

4 out of 5 stars ASBOs vs. Alsations.......2008-01-02

With this low-budget gem, we British are continuing to prove our worth in the horror/suspense genre. Yep, with WILDERNESS we have another cult hit on our hands, to rank alongside DOG SOLDIERS and SEVERANCE.

They almost nailed this one perfectly, let down only slightly by some very cheesy dialog in places (especially the dialog of the hero yob). The suspense and mystery is nicely built up, and satisfyingly resolved as the film reaches its end. There is nothing worse than plot-holes that aren't tied up, and thankfully WILDERNESS has little or no unresolved questions by the end.

The writer's choice of opposing teams - ASBO yobs vs a lunatic and his hunting dogs - is quite possibily a stroke of genius. Darkly funny and, at times, uncomfortably gratifying when the yobs meet their gruesome deaths.

Over all, this film is enjoyable for its oddness and its... erm... Britishness... and even in the laughable scenes (hiding in the sea from dogs) you find yourself transfixed. Well worth buying!

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable overall. Three-and-a-bit star rating........2007-03-27

I liked this one. Quite a lot, actually.
It's a gritty and believable Brit-flick in that it's well-acted and convincing, if unspectacular.

There ARE strong parallels with the excellent Dog Soldiers - if you didn't like that then I'd give Wilderness a miss.

I found that the plot developed nicely and, unlike so many films, I was effortlessly drawn into the film without having to suspend any disbelief of what I was seeing. One could possibly criticise the film for being 'tame' in this respect as it wasn't 'fantastic' in the horror sense.

There is some sexual attraction between two characters, but when this results in some physical contact, there is no graphic sex or nudity whatsoever, which I found hugely disappointing. I don't know why they included this aspect of the plot if they couldn't pull it off. Not a single raspberry-ripple on display. Hrmph!

I would say that even though the film could do with a supernatural or other horror enhancement, that as it is it's still a most enjoyable jaunt. Not a complete woofer.

4 out of 5 stars Gruesome and gory but entertaining.......2007-03-12

I never thought this would be the kind of movie I'd watch repeatedly, but it has turned out that I've watched it two or three times since I got it. If only because the first time around I kept losing track of which character was which.

It's gripping and scary, but if it's trying to be a psychological thriller, it fails utterly. It's not one of those clever horror movies which stay with you long after it's over, but as a gruesome horror movie it works. The mysterious figure controling the dogs doesn't really inspire as much fear as the dogs themselves.

It's worth watching, and it is good, but nothing particularly special really.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant film with a great action!!!.......2006-12-30

Great film. I wasn't sure i would like this film but really enjoyed it. More than just your normal slasher movie. Some great scenes....those dogs ouch they hurt. Really recommend this movie!

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating but Flawed.......2008-01-29

This series held my interest from beginning to end. How could it miss with such a monumental protagonist and such absorbing subject matter. I especially liked Nigel Havers as Randolph, and the actors who played Stanley Baldwin, Ramsay McDonald, and Clement Atlee. I am afraid that I am less enthusiastic about Sian Phillips, who always plays Sian Phillips, and who, in my estimation, managed to make Clemmie rather unpleasant (almost as unpleasant as Phillips, appropriately, made Livia Augusta in "I Claudius."). As for Robert Hardy, he does an on-target impression of Sir Winston Churchill, but I think that he was misdirected.

Did Sir Winston really orate twenty-four-seven? Surely he spoke in a more modulated voice with the family around the dining room table [when he wasn't shouting at Randolph] or in the privacy of his bedroom! In this production, he addresses his "dear Clemmie" in his "fight-them-on-the-beaches" persona, to such an extent that Hardy's portrayal sometimes slips into parody. But again, I believe that the fault must be laid at the door of the director.

This quibble aside, the production is excellent. The recreation of the scenes in the House of Commons is fascinating. When Churchill is at the dispatch boxes letting the coalition government have it, Hardy is magnificent. This series is highly recommended for anyone interested in British political history.

      Amazon.co.uk Review

Japanese filmmaker Masanori Hata made this above-average family film about a dog and a cat--friends with a tendency to make mischief--who go on an unanticipated adventure when one is rushed downriver and the other follows. Hata, who took four years to complete the work, relies on purely cinematic storytelling techniques (these animals don't have human voices on the soundtrack), making The Adventures of Milo and Otis an international favourite. Dudley Moore narrates, but the film works because Hata's filmmaking fundamentals are so good. Children love this, but adults can easily appreciate and enjoy it, too. --Tom Keogh

I spent many nights watching it as a child it never grows old

5 out of 5 stars my favorite childhood film.......2005-11-14

I loved this film as a child, I had my mum renting it every week at the video store, I must have watched it about 100 times. Even though its been at least 10 years since I last saw it I can still remember what happened and the song at the end. I definatly recomend this to any one who has young children especially if they love animals.
