Slightly missed the eek!.......2008-03-09
As scarey films go this is about as scarey as a basket of dirty laundry. The plot holes are huge and somethings are never explained. People do stupid things for no reason and there's the usual entering dark rooms without turning the light on, etc.
All in all the story had such promise but the execution lacked any kind of talent, relying on clever camera filters and shaky cam to provide suspense. Give it a miss would be my recommendation - unless I've missed the eek, sorry point.
Awful. Another Asian film remade and ruined by the Americans.......2008-03-04
Possibly the least scary horror film I have ever seen. After about 20 minutes I was ready to turn it off, but I thought, I've paid for it, I may as well watch it. That was a mistake on two counts. The script was awful, embarressingly so in places, and I think they could've put a baseball cap on a chimpanzee and it would've done a better job in the directors chair.
How anyone can give this this stink anything but 1 star is beyond me. (I think 1 star is generous, but I can't give zero. If I could, I would)
If anyone was actually scared by this, I think you possibly have some kind of nervous disorder.
Another reviewer stated it's about as scary as Scooby Doo. I'd go along with that. The acting was better in Scooby Doo though.
Pathetic beyond belief.
Buy something else.
Anything else.
Surprisingly good.......2008-01-13
I had pretty low expectations for Pulse, based on a number of the other reviews. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. The premise behind it seems like total nonsense, but it was well done and had some decent characters in it. Certainly worth watching if only so you can make your own mind up on it.
BEAUTIFULLY DONE BUT REALLY CONFUSING.......2007-10-26
Following a strange disappearance, Mattie Webber, (Kristen Bell) becomes concerned over their welfare, only for friends Isabell Fuentes, (Christina Milian) and Stone, (Rick Gonzalez) try to get her to calm down. When she learns the awful truth of what happened, they gather around to support her again. Trying to get over it by tracking down what killed him, the trail leads her to the owner of his stolen computer, Dexter McCarthy, (Ian Somerhalder) who has difficulty explaining what happened. Plagued by strange dreams and visions, they find out that a virus within the computers is causing all the problems and hysteria. When it becomes all the more dangerous and is able to spread throughout the internet at a whim, the survivors manage to find a way of restoring the virus before it comes to haunt them.
The Good News: This wasn't all that bad as it could've been. The film's at it's best when making the characters feel paranoid or delusional with it's ghost gags. These are simply fabulous and really make the film any sort of watchable. To begin with, they're quite creepy-looking in their own right, and they do manage to produce some good shock jumps from their sudden appearance. The beginning, where one appears from a darkened corner of a library is simply superb, and a later sequence where it slowly and surely emerges from the shadows in front of a potential victim is simply chilling. Great care is taken in all the set-ups out there, as each one is extremely creepy in their opening stages and some, including the bathroom shock and the instant-chat scenes being the big winners in here for being creepy and creative at the same time. The others in here are just as good, but those aren't as big in the chilling area as the main ones are, yet every single set-up offered here is creepy to a degree. That means that there's always this sense of tension in the background of nearly every scene, making it play out a lot faster than it seems. The pace is one of the least acceptable things, but the fact that the mystery plays out pretty rapidly and that the chilling scenes are pretty well spaced-out to allow for over-crowded and interest to come in nicely. These elements are it's best points.
The Bad News: There wasn't as much wrong with this one as it should've been. One of the biggest flaws is that the film bases itself around a really non-scary idea. The idea of having a cellphone being used to contort and terrify perceptions isn't that terrifying. The only way this would've worked was if it was slowly realized that functions within could do it on extreme cases, where here it's just said as a fact along with some computer tampering. There's no way that this is taken seriously as there's nothing able to connect with reality, which is the intended target. What makes it even more ludicrous is that it's that they're able to bring demons from a hidden wavelength into a different dimension, and that's just stretching it to a really impossible angle. That there is what will harm this one most of all, as it's way to impossible to believe for it's own good. That also makes the film really hard to understand, as it's got to tie all these elements together that don't make sense into something, and it only results in confusion. The only other factor that doesn't really appeal is the look of the film. The film is coated with a drab, bland feel to it with a washed out look. It's a really unattractive look that makes it feel even more artificial than it really should. These are the main flaws here.
The Final Verdict: Even though it's not all that intelligent or looks pleasing, this is at least passable entertainment, considering it's good moments. Give it a shot if you're frightened easily, love the current spate of remakes or the teeny-bopper films while others should give heed.
