Classic Re-make.......2007-10-15

The 1980s was not really a decade for re-making classic horror films; rather, it was a time when high quality original horror was being produced in great quantity. In fact, it is the late-1970s & 1980s horror that is now seeing a mass re-makeover of sorts ['Creepshow', 'Halloween', 'The Fog', 'The Omen', 'The Hills Have Eyes', 'Dawn of the Dead' and 'The Amityville Horror' to name but a few]. But there were a handful of classic re-makes directed during the 1980s, and two spring to mind, both being in the cross genres of horror and science fiction: John Carpenter's 'The Thing' and ...

... Chuck Russell's 'The Blob'.

This cool little horror tale is a re-make of the 1958 version starring Steve McQueen. Here we have Kevin [brother of Matt] Dillon, fresh out of acting roles like 'Platoon' and 'Catholic Boys'. Dillon is a competent actor and right for the part as small town bad boy, Flag. Other stars include Donovan Leitch [Cutting Class] as the high school football jock, Shawnee Smith [The Stand] and Art La Fleur.

Out of the night skies, a comet soars over the tops of pine trees before landing in the deep forest that flanks a small town. Soon an alien substance is making its way towards the town, taking victims and leaving their charred bodies in its wake. It appears unstoppable and soon government men in protective suits turn up, supposedly there to contain and destroy the intruder.

But not eveyone is who they appear to be.

Along with 'The Stuff' this movie is one of my favourite horror films of the 1980s. Chuck Russell ['A Nightmare on Elm Street 3'] has created a superior film with this re-make; the film contains humour as well as horror and the special effects are pretty good, even today. I liked the small town USA setting with all its typical characters [like Daniel Attias created with Stephen King's 'Silver Bullet']and the little twist at the end of the film.

Overall 'The Blob' has all the qualities of a good horror movie: a decent plot, scary moments, enough gore without being 'sick for the sake of it', humour and pretty teenagers being picked off one-by-one.

This sci-fi slasher flick deserves a 10/10. If you enjoyed 'The Thing' and 'The Fly', you'll love this one.

The Blob, what a monster, man-eating goo from space. What die hard monster fan choud rests? Not me for sure. I first saw the blob on an old VHS. That movie became part of my chidhood, like Clash of the Titans and Forbinen Planet.

Now years later I find the remake, and boy it's dose not disapont. It the old monster movie gave an gun-ho attude. The Acting is good, the effects are great and strong storie makes the one of the best movies of late 80s. This is a how remake shound be done, hollywood.

They Don't (Re)make Them Like This Anymore.......2006-08-08

It is currently the trend in Hollywood at the moment to remake classics, and horror is the biggest victim of all genres. Movies such as Dawn of the Dead, the Texas Chiansaw Massacre, The Fog, When a Stranger Calls and The Omen have all recieved this treatment and the end is result is always the same. Crap!

But in the 1980's some truly classic remakes were released that were superior to the originals in many ways (usually because the director was a fan of the original and wanted to pay homage to that). John Carpenter's The Thing and David Cronenberg's The Fly were far more impressive than the 1950's movies they were inspired by and that can also be said for the 1988 remake of The Blob.

Inspired by a rather naff Steve McQueen movie, Chuck (A Nightmare On Elm Street 3, The Mask) Russell's reimagining was a fun, gore-packed sci-fi horror that featured Matt Dillon's younger brother Kevin as the lead anti-hero, with Saw's Shawnee Smith as the cheerleader-cum-heroine, who try to save small town America from a jello-like substance that devours everything in its path.

While a little cheesy in places, this movie is hugely enjoyable and should be a lesson to modern directors that if you're going to remake a movie, do it properly!

I have fond memories of the 1958 original version of "The Blob," mainly because they actually showed this film to us in high school. Do not ask me why we were the beneficiaries of this largesse, especially since it lacks any of the implicit arguments against teenage sex that we find in this 1988 remake. Actually, my favorite scene in this modern B-movie is when a high school Romeo out on Lover's Lane has gotten his date into a drunken stupor and tries to take advantage of her unconscious condition. Of course, he is just one of many people to get there's in this film, but he also represents one of the few times that we are rooting for the monster.

On one hand this remake is fairly faithful to the original: once again it is the town's young stud juvenile delinquent (Kevin Dillon in the Steve McQueen role) who has to save the town from the invader from outer space and the film does a nice homage to the original's best scene, when the Blob takes out the local movie house. But because this is thirty years later the political sensibilities of the film are updated considerably. The damsel in distress this time around (Shawnee Smith), might need a hand from the aforementioned young stud, but she is also capable of being part of the solution. Then there is the whole government conspiracy sub-plot that makes this movie something of a precursor to "The X-Files."

In fact, if you want to get reductionalistic (and that is one of the fun things you get to do with a bad B-movie like "The Blob"), this movie is a cross between the original "The Blob," "The X-Files," the remake of "The Thing" (in terms of the gross special effects"), and any teen flick where the good girl and the bad boy end up together. The result is a modern version of a classic drive-in flick, which is to say, a below par flick where you do not have to keep your eyes on the screen the entire time to be able to follow the action. The blood & gore level is pretty high, which means your feeling for this film comes down to whether your wince or laugh at such moments.

I laughed, ergo, three stars.

Final Note: Keep your eye on former E.R. pain in the butushka Paul McCrane as Deputy Bill Briggs, who discovers there are worst things than having a helicopter take off your arm.

Not Anne Widdecombes new Fitness video..........2004-01-22

Ah, The Blob. I first saw this movie when i was about 12 years old, and still remember it well to this day, as it was genuinely scary in certain scenes. Sure, its cheesy too, but that just adds to the joy! Basically we are led to believe an alien has fallen too earth, only this one eats everything it comes across!Or could the creature be a result of some hideous government experiment?! At the start of the movie the creature is tiny, by the end...you do the math! Favourite scenes in the movie are when the old tramp finds the Blob and makes friends with it...and the crazy old preacher with his little "surprise" at the end. Could have done with Steve Mcqueen (like the original) for added coolness, but a great way to waste a couple of hours.
