not perfect but very good indeed.........2008-02-27
very interesting film indeed.. miles better than zombie's first offering "house of 1000 corpes" that starts good but kind of becomes a joke eventually.. his first film did show glimpses of his talent, but ended up as a self-indulgent, overly bizzare horror piece that made little sense.. on the other hand this one is very well structured, has no holes in the plot and has a focused simple story that has a grittier edge but doesnt get ruined from too many weird visuals and uneeded nastiness and gore.. also it easily stands on its own and can be watched without seeing the house of 1000 c first..
Many of the reviewers here talk about how brutal, disturbing and nasty this film is but i totally disagree.. Its nowhere close to other recent offerings like the saw trilogy, hostel, hills hv eyes, even the new texas chainsaw etc..
unpleasant and dark yes but def not gory or gross as some here claim. i am not even sure it can be classified as horror...
great characters even if mainly one dimensional, especially great camera work- not overdone as in his first film, clever cutting/editing and most of all not just great, but superb 70s soundrack that makes this film a bit more special than what it really is..
the combo of the ending with the song played is i think genious...
not 5 stars cause at the end of the day there is not much depth, but other than that just great........
An excellent follow up........2008-02-24
Rob Zombie here cements his reputation as a great cult director, with this gory, western-tinged horror sequel to the decent 'House of 1000 Corpses'. It's well written and acted, and surprisingly watchable even for those who are not necessarily horror fans. Unlike many horrors, it gives the killers real motives, personalities and makes them quite likeable, in a sick kind of way. If you can take a step back from the violence and see the quality of the film, you're in from a real treat here.
hidden gem ???.......2007-12-26
rented this just out of curiosity , not being a big lover of horror but....thoroughly enjoyed it. great soundtrack , well made ( this was a BIG surprise !) just felt it was a bit too o.t.t with some of the violence . loved the end ( thelma & louise anyone ? ) all this & a cheap trick t-shirt ( this gained it another 1/2 star in my humble opinion )
Don't watch it, you'll only encourage him to make more..........2007-10-29
When Rob Zombie made 'House of 1000 corpses', there was little original about the plot or directing. It was helped along by a surreal edge that kind of held the interest. Unfortunately comparing his films to the classic slasher/exploitation flicks is like comparing his music to that of 'Black Sabbath'. The original masters of the genre win hands down every time.
Now, for starters there are some changes to characters/plot that don't mesh with the first film to which this is meant to follow. This is meant to give a grittier edge, but I found it annoying. Secondly, the plot sides the viewers with the bad guys. No problems there per se, it has been done before and with great success (see 'Natural Born Killers', 'The Wild Bunch', 'From dusk til dawn'). Here it is attempted with such lack of subtlety that I was willing the whole lot of them to be gunned down as quickly as possible. As for the violence, I did not find it shocking or disturbing because again it was so unsubtle and gratuitous, played without any originality that it quickly tires. However, lots of people enjoyed it so as always, it's best to make up your own mind. Try doing so without parting with money though. On a more positive note, Mr. Zombie's 'Halloween' remake is much more watchable.
Top secret clown business........2007-10-26
First of all let me point out that although Devil's Rejects is technically a sequel to 1000 Corpses, Rejects can be viewed on it's own without having seen 1000 Corpses. When I saw 1000 Corpses I wasn't that impressed overall. It made little sense and wasn't very entertaining. I did however like Zombie's style, or at least the style he was aiming for. For this reason, and due to a positive review from Rodger Ebert, I bought this DVD. It's clear from the very start of this movie that Zombie has looked at 1000 Corpses objectively and tried not to retread the same mistakes with Rejects. His style is intact, but now it's clearer and in better context. There is a very clear advancement in Zombie's talents between 1000 Corpses and Rejects. The gritty look from 1000 Corpses is here but without the confusing camera movements and weird visuals. The script is much better, acheiving both humour and disturbing brutality often at the same time. Captain Spalding hilariously comandeering a woman's car is one of my favourite moments in the movie. The acting is good with not a single hint of overacting. The soundtrack is fantastic and a real stand out aspect of this movie. Zombie even throws in the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd song Free Bird. I recommend everyone to give this film a go.

In a word: WOW.......2008-01-17
Is Rob Zombie a totally insane, sick and sadistic piece of scum? Or is he just one of the best directors in all of film history? This is the question he wanted his audiences to bring up while writing this total head-smasher of blood, sex, violence, power and insaneness! The answer is: it's up to you.
The plot has been explained several times in previous reviews, but essentially: A family of murderous crackpots go on the run from cops who are equally - if not more - insane. If you're a horror fan, that may sound bloody perfect. No. It wont be anything like what you're expecting.
What is this film's genre exactly? Horror? Western? Thriller? Action? Chase movie? B movie? Slaughterhouse flick? I'd say a mix of all of 'em! After watching this movie, I had to lye down on my bed with the lights off for about half an hour! I think it says somewhere on the blurb about the film leading to a great final showdown... wrong! The entire film seems like a showdown!
Some of the scenes in this are enough to make even the most hard core horror fans squirm in their seats. What happens isn't actually as bad as some other horrors, it's just the way it's done that makes it so much more terrifying- another of Zombie's subtle tricks. All this leads to one of the greatest climaxes of all time- the perfect, immensely powerful ending.
Yes. This is the most terrifying film I have ever seen, only just pushing 'Inland Empire' out of the way. Basically, this film is a complete experience. One to watch with a few friends, so they can pump some mental stability back into you at the end!
blown away!!.......2008-01-08
i was really enthralled by this film, i enjoyed it immensely. i dont even care if that makes me a sicko!i think the soundtracks on this and 1000 corpses are just perfect and blow me away!!don't disregard it because its disgusting, it maybe bloody but it's also bloody clever...
Worth Watching!.......2007-08-14
I watched this film only a few days after watching House Of 1000 Corpses, and im glad i watched that film first because it makes the viewer understand more about whats actually going on here. So i highly recomend if your thinking of watching this movie, you watch HO100C first even though it is very poor compared to Devils Rejects.
This is a big improvement from HO1000C. Its quite twisted, bloody and funny at the same time. I love the way a brutal murder scene is shot with some typical "hillbilly" music in the background its a huge contrast but it works well... this film doesnt really scare you that much..Its not a Psychological film, but its very entertaining and will leave you nailed to your seat (excuse the pun, ahem - watch the film you will understand)to see what happens and how it ends.
Like many others have said also - i ended up routing for the bad guys! weird.
I really enjoyed this film and would reccomend it highly.
I LIKED THIS .......2007-08-06
Following a police raid on they're house, Otis B. Driftwood, (Bill Moseley) and Baby Firefly, (Sherri Moon-Zombie) manage to escape their house, while Sheriff John Wydell, (William Forsythe) captures the rest of the family. Meeting up with Captain Spaulding, (Sig Haig) at a local motel to discuss what to do, they take the motel and it's occupants hostage. As Sheriff Wydell wades through the countryside to get to them, they take to the roads trying to evade him. When he finally catches up with them, he takes them prisoner and begins to torture them, vowing to put them through everything they put their victims through. Seeing an opportunity at escape, they make a dash for freedom, fighting for their lives to get away and back at Wydell.
The Good News: This here does have a few good things about it. One of the biggest improvements over the first one is that the film really amps up the blood and gore. The only really shocking part is where a character has nails thrust into their hands, but the fact is that it's still a pretty bloody film. With tons of gunshots, a slit throat, innumerable amounts of bloody beatings, and some stabbing as well. With a fair amount of damage taken that doesn't result in fatalities also bringing in some gore as well, this here is a decent enough time-waster for gore-hounds. Also quite nice was that there was one sequence that is quite inventive and torturous. Holding a family hostage, one of them bursts into the room where the face of one of the family members as a mask. Strapping it to their face, they leave it on them, who later runs out of the room screaming hysterically until a kill from a sudden, unexpected source in the film's one true jump shock. It's quite cruel and creative, all for the sheer amount of joy they have with the concept of it, and for the fact that it's done in a sadistic, downbeat tone, and mostly erases a lot of the negatives of the film. There's also a couple of really funny moments in here that were unexpectedly funny, and were pleasing to see. The opening shootout is also one of the greatest ways to open a film, with tons of gunfire and a lot of smashed up furniture from bullets causing a great mood right from the get-go. When it really wanted it, it was quite entertaining.
The Bad News: As good as it could've been, there's still some things in here that need to be brought up. The most obvious and glaring problem in this one is the extremely annoying and aggravating camera movements used in this one. The camera shakes around wildly and uncontrollably during most of the scenes, often at tilted angles to begin with, rendering it nearly impossible to figure out what is going on in the scene. The fact that this goes on during the film's money shots is quite a big let-down, as it's for all the chasing and torture scenes that this happens during the big moments is a huge distraction. Another big headache is the way that the film occasionally uses slow-motion during non-sequitur scenes. Every now and then, for no reason, the film would slow down and just feature the scene going on in slow-motion without anything playing in the background. It's a nice stylish choice, but it doesn't serve any real purpose to the film for it to be so. It doesn't help us understand the film any more, and it's a really weird and confusing move. Surprisingly, it also wasn't that extreme or violent as was hyped up to be. The on-screen tortures are pretty brutal and clever, but the fact that they're all distorted with the wild and obnoxious camera movements that it's impossible to get a sense of what's happening, rendering all the torturing mute when you can't see it happening. When it could be seen what was going on, it wasn't that psychologically terrifying or upsetting either. The motel room sequence, which could've been terrifying, passes over without any real damage, and it's not all that damning a sequence. The slow pace really drags this out as well. So much time is spent with the family doing random things that aren't that important in moving the plot along, as an argument over getting ice cream or a stop-off at a chicken farm being the prime factors for this. It really could've been trimmed significantly and cut down, as this is a good fifteen minutes too long. Beyond these, though, this wasn't that bad of a film.
The Final Verdict: This was way better than the first one was, but there's still a few glaring problems with this one. It's still very brutal and quite graphic at times, but there's plenty to nitpick at, so this is really only recommended for those who liked the first one, Rob Zombie fans or those that might be interested in the more brutal side of the genre.
I am bewildered! This is not a TOUCH on HOATC.......2006-11-24
I enjoyed House of A Thousand Corpses immensely. I thought it was a real 3-course blowout of a horror fillum; it had all the ingredients of a classic horror and at the end I felt pleasantly bloated (mentally, that is!).
All these tantalising reviews promise that Devil's Rejects is EVEN BETTER!! Gawd, I was salivating over the DVD when it arrived (apols to the next lender).
BUT WHAT AN ANTICLIMAX!! Any faint whiff of suspenseful tension was blown away by CHEAP GAGS of the CHEESIEST order!
The cinematography was as bland as Edam; the original was shot mostly at night, in the rain, in luscious horror settings in (and under) the house. This remake is mostly in daylight with lingering scenes in a drab Motel. Eyecandy, not. Worst of all, the fantastic and stimulating arty interludes didn't flash-up like in 1,000 Corpses. I loved this and missed it.
Oh how funny. A fat simpleton is making a joke about fplucking chickens. I just don't understand the need for cheap cheap humour in what is supposed to be a sequel to a 'proper', convincing freakfest.
SPOILER!
.. I do, however, agree with another reviewer that when the cop finally goes on his own barmy rampage and turns the tables on the baddies, that it's easy to start rooting for them. Then, at the very end of the film even this potentially redeeming pleasure is squashed flat with such a lame closing shot. I think they should have driven-off into the sunset and the snippet of them larking around together in good health would have left you wondering whether that was a glimpse of their future merriments or an epitaph (after all, they had just been stabbed, shot, crucified and torched -did I miss anything?).
And there's no mention whatsoever of the real star.. The Doctor. Hello?
SPOILER OVER..
IF you find horror films a bit too scary and prefer a bit of humour to make the gory scenes less scary, then THIS IS THE FILM FOR YOU.
Or if you like cops'n'robbers films over horror films, you may also like this.
The low score reflects this films COMPARISON to it's predecessor. Otherwise it may have earned 1 1/2 more.

major improvement........2005-12-21
Though I am still a fan, I thought that sometimes House of 1000 corpses missed the mark. I am pleased to announce however, that devil's rejects is one of those rare movie sequels that manages to vastly improve on the original. The plot is relativly simple, after a police raid; the remaining members of the firefly family go on the run (enaging in a little torture and murder for kicks) while being pursued by Sherrif wydell, brother of the murdered cop in the first. I don't want to give anything away but i would happily reccomend this to any horror fan.
