5 out of 5 stars THIS MOVIE IS BRILLIANT!!!!!!.......2008-02-06

Dont listen to any of the bad reviews this movie gets. It is utterly fantastic. Yeah its straight to DVD but theres nothing wrong with that, its the only way a lot of these low budget independant films can get a release.
This family, although average on the surface, are complete psychopaths. Like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre in suburbia. The older brother who thinks hes in control but has his own problems, the twins who couldnt care less who they kill, the younger brother who is convinced he is different from the rest of his family and Lenny, the thing they keep locked up in the basement. So the movie goes, until you get to the end of the movie when you find out that these people are much more than your average psychopaths. Then you finally get to see Lenny, the thing in the basement. This is great, talented, original movie making. As a horror fan you have to sift through a lot of rubbish, but unexpected gems like this make it worth while. God bless Lions Gate.

4 out of 5 stars "Confused? You won't be, after this episode of...Arggggg".......2008-01-29

The Hamilton's isn't really a horror film, the opening scene sort of suggests that it might be (and a rubbish one and that) but once proceedings have kicked off we get to see The Butcher Brothers actual concept; a low budget indie film about a dysfunctional family. OK, so they're dysfunctional in the same way that Leatherfaces family are a little left of field, but essentially most of the scenes wouldn't actually look too far out of place in a Todd Solondz film. So I can sort of see why those expecting a straight horror film would be disappointed. However, if it's a highly original, cleverly scripted movie going experience you are after, then go for it. A crazy cross between the Brady Bunch, Lost Boys, Chainsaw Massacre and Drugstore cowboy.

1 out of 5 stars AWFUL!!!!.......2008-01-27

I'll keep this short and sweet, don't be fooled by the front, the reviews on it or the rating.I've seen gorier PG films than this drivel.Stay well away from this one.I gave it one star for the end credits,on a whole this film stinks,if amazon had zero or minus star ratings i would have used them.

1 out of 5 stars no!!!.......2008-01-08

y i even bothered to buy this garbage i don't know. to be honest i'd been looking forward to watching it for ages because i adore horror, but no, this is not horror, its just rubbish!!!the storyline is idiotic and i urge everybody who is thinking of watching it to reconsider and see any other film out there!!!

5 out of 5 stars "Every Family Has Its Secrets".......2008-01-01

On the surface, the Hamilton's might appear unextraordinary: four moody young adults who must learn to cope following the death of their parents. Explored through the eyes of Francis Hamilton - the youngest - we quickly discover that there is a dark side to this family. Deeper and darker than their violent inclinations towards the strangers they bring into their home.

A good, bloody horror with depth. Whether you're into slashers or psychological thrillers, there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy this movie.

2 out of 5 stars boring!!!.......2008-02-24

This is one of those films that you just know who is going to survive till the end. I WISH I HADNT OF BOUGHT THIS AS IT WAS NOT SCARY WHATSOEVER!!!.

2 out of 5 stars Not great.......2007-12-19

This wasnt a great horror film. The acting is poor and some of the scenes are unrealistic and cut short. I was bored watching this to be honest. There are much better horror movies out there so dont waste your money on this tripe.

4 out of 5 stars A GUILTY PLEASURE.......2007-10-26

Driving to Las Vegas, friends Mark, (Alan Ritchson) Adam, (Tom Nagel) Sophie, (Myiea Coy) Atlanta, (Ashley Rebecca Hawkins) Liz, (Tiffany Christenson) and Rachel, (Catherine Wreford) to celebrate their upcoming graduation. Taking a detour, they become stuck in the wilderness and become stranded. Trying to get out, they happen upon a strange farmhouse out in the woods. Taking it upon themselves to investigate as no one seems to be home, but find no one as well. While they don't find anyone inside, what they do find is enough to spook them and force them to rethink their escape. When the owner shows up, who's a deranged serial killer, and begins to kill them off one-by-one, they try to use their instincts to survive. When it becomes even more apparent that there's more than one killer, they fight harder than before to escape.

The Good News: This wasn't as bad as it could've been. This one manages one crucial trick that so many fail, which is to stay watchable when it suddenly veers off into familiarity. This type of scenario has played itself out pretty frequently, yet this one still keeps itself fun and enjoyable. The killer is introduced relatively early, and this means that most of the film is about thinning the cast off, and that leads to numerous scenes where the killer is stalking the group. When one character is trapped in the barn underneath the table where the killer is operating on a victim is particularly intense, and an earlier scene where one victim is trapped inside a car during an assault is it's finest moment. That it soon proceeds into a thrilling chase through the woods is a mere bonus. One other big suspense scene is the attack on the victims inside the walls of the house, as the pickax blasting holes to get at them comes close to nearly hitting them on several occasions and the flight to get out is pretty thrilling. The high body count is also a plus, as there's a tree brunch cutting a victim in half at the waist while they're trapped in a car, a pickax to the head, needles stabbed in the neck, a really gory shotgun blast to the stomach, a hanging on a barbed wire noose and a pitchfork through the stomach only for further killing to be done with a chainsaw, among others that aren't that particularly original. Still, that death is one of the finest in the film, as he repeatedly screams to not kill them even after they've already been impaled to a door. Still, they keep begging and the Butcher feels the need to go get a chainsaw to finish the job. A simply great kill and a solid favorite moment. Another choice moment comes when one lesbian refuses to leave behind her lover's severed torso and drags the upper half into the car to console it. That's the sort of committed relationship that isn't normally seen in a horror film and gives it a little extra that might not normally appear. With an ending twist that is quite thrilling and really sells the film, this one does have some good parts to it.

The Bad News: This wasn't as bad as it could've been, but there were still problems. The biggest one is that the film is way to familiar. This type of film has been done numerous times before, and there are way too many spots where the viewer can spot where the scene was lifted from. There are two big ones that can spotted simply from the plot description, but there's at least four or five others that are cribbed pretty regularly. The last half is really one whole movie shoe-horned into the others, and it sticks out by following certain scenes really shot-for-shot. It's pretty distracting. Despite the sheer familiarity, there's rarely been a film that displays this much idiocy in one movie. Every stupid thing they could rally together, they do. They flash and taunt the serial killer. They drive around with people stuck out of sun-roofs. They get blind drunk immediately after the first person gets killed. Then, at the moment when they enter the barn, the biggest insult to our intelligence comes into play so far when one of them says that this kind of thing always happens inside the creepy farmhouse in horror movies. Not only does the movie know that it makes use of every threadbare cliché the genre has to offer, it also has the gigantic brass ones to tell us about them. There's no sense of it being an ironic comment on the situation, it is blindly stated for all to hear, and that is the big mistake. We know it's going to happen, but they don't and to make a comment like that simply shows what this is going to be. The killer is also physically revealed too early and could've benefited from a later reveal, but these are the main problems.

The Final Verdict: While it may seem to be simply a knock-off other, more well-known films, this was still a pretty fun time that does manage to entertain. Though that rip-off feel might be enough for most to dismiss this, those that do decide will find much to like. It's simply a matter of whether or not a film being incredibly familiar is enough to warrant a viewing.

3 out of 5 stars Average, yet strangely enjoyable slasher film........2007-09-10

The butcher is an average slasher film, with an average cast who deliver average performances yet is strangely enjoyable.

The story is the standard slasher set up of: teenagers have a car crash, car won't start, teenagers go to "get help", teenagers find a "spooky" house, and teenagers get killed. There is nothing remotely original but it is all done with a knowing wink to camera and none of it is taken too seriously. Even the "twist" at the end has been numerous times before.

While far from the best horror of recent times it is much better than some of the appalling "horrors" I have seen recently such as Heartstopper or The Hamilton's. It is also mercifully short at approx 80 mins so it is over before boredom really has a chance to set in. Don't expect to be blown away and you will probably enjoy this for what it is, a standard slasher with a standard set up and a "twist" ending that is far from original.
