Uncomfortable!.......2008-02-25
There is nothing clever, interesting or even scary about this film - it is just horriby uncomfortable. There are extended scenes of sheer gruesome violence that perform no other purpose than to make the viewer cringe. The only people who should watch this film are those who enjoy watching people being tortured - if you don't, then stay away!
Moderately Scary.......2008-02-17
This movie gets only three stars from me. It's not your typical horror movie, and perhaps the only real thing unsettling about is that this movie is loosely based on actual events - a mixture of the true story Joanne Lees (author of "No Turning Back") wrote about, mixed with a few ellaborated accounts on what might or could have possibly happened to various backpackers who went missing in Western Australia.
It's the kind of movie that makes you wonder how safe you are - even if you're in your own car - driving along some unfamiliar stretch of road in the vast country. It'll also teach you that you can't always trust the kindnesses of strangers.
Not bad, but really not a masterpiece.......2007-12-29
This movie caused quite a disturbance when it opened and attracted a lot of extatic praise (including from Quentin Tarantino) and some not less hysterical hostility. I am not really astonished that it happened, but I believe that both reactions are exaggerated. This is a good, solid, quite usual movie about some young people meeting a deranged serial killer on their way. Most of those movies are very bad and this one is clearly better than most of them - but it still has weak points. So - three stars.
First, the good points - this movie is trying to stick to the realities of the world and it is doing it really well. The "heroes" are very average, regular young people, not very handsome, not very smart, (not very clean), not very strong, in fact not very anything. Just two average girls and one (very) average guy in a dirty T-shirt.
The killer looks really, but really not like a monster and this is another strong point of the movie. In fact he is so banal and average, that it is easy to understand why meeting him never turns on any alert signals in people....
The violence is described in a horribly naturalistic way and I believe this is an asset - murder and torture are dirty, horrible, messy and sad things and there is nothing glamourous in them. And this movie really is NOT glorifying violence. The killer is not Jason or Freddy Krueger, has none of the attraction of Rutger Hauer in "Hitcher", none of the humour present in "Scream", in fact his crimes are unlikely to fascinate anybody, except maybe the already seriously mentally deranged.
The violence that is not shown but suggested is maybe the most horrifying, in the scenes when one of the girls find the stash of the killer, where he keeps the loot taken from his victims.... This scene is really strong....
And finally it is true, that Australian desert is shown here in a great way...
There are however also weaknesses, which make it impossible to me to give more than three stars. The first 40 minutes are simply empty. Virtually nothing happens. This is even made worse by the fact that the "heroes" are soooo average - they do not say or do anything interesting during all this time. In fact I managed to forget their names at that moment.
The story has one big hole in it. If a man kidnapped and murdered on such a mass scale, for so many years and ALWAYS attacked closely around just ONE and the same place, how is it possible that he was not caught? Especially considering, that he is not even concealing too well his loot (especially the cars...) and that his den is well visible on any map (OK, it is an abandoned village - but it is the only abandoned village in the middle of a vast nothing....).
Another point - this movie is inspired by real events and the killer is the combination of two real serial murderers, who were both caught and convicted. And still, at the end, the director states that the investigation in the deaths of our "heroes" was marked by "ignorance and incompetence", which resulted in the survivor being for a long time suspected of the murders.... If nothing like that happened in the reality, while bashing the cops, who in the real life got both their men?
So, all in all, this is not a bad movie, certainly better than most of the "serial killer vs teenagers" productions, but a masterpiece it is not.
WOLF CREEK.......2007-12-09
I waited in anticipation for this film after its showing at the cannes film festival & i must say it did not disappoint. As mentioned in other reviews this is not a blood feast just an edge of your seat realistic horror which in a way disturbs you not unlike the Exorcist. This is my opinion but i may be wrong, the reviewers who gave this film poor scores are either missing the point, or like most so called horrors now just in to digitally enhanced rubbish.
Wolf Creek.......2007-11-04
This is definitely one of the most disturbing films I've ever watched. It gives probably the most realistic insight into the terror felt by victims of serial killers. The acting was superb and was complimented by the excellent camera work and great directing by Greg McLean. Some people would get bored by the slow start but I think the slow build up adds to the terror that follows later. I loved the lack of dramatic music usually used by most horror makers today as this added to the sense of reality Wolf Creek brought to its viewers. You could feel the terror of the predicament the victims found themselves in and John Jarratt who played the killer was masterful in his depiction of a true psychopath. His Jekyll and Hyde personality was truly terrifying. For a sense of true terror combined with a sense of reality Wolf Creek will not disappoint you, a great modern day horror/thriller that belongs up there with some of the older classics, a great but disturbing film.

Too gritty.......2008-01-03
Wolf Creek is the kind of film which goes to painstaking lengths to prove how gritty and horrible it is. Much of the scene-setting - whilst occasionally evocative - does everything it can to make everything docu-soap realistic (kind of like the Blair With Project, but well filmed and with proper actors). I can see why it was filmed this way (to, as I say, give it a brutally real feel) but I don't really class this as entertainment.
The second half of the film is simply a Halloween style hide-and-seek teen hunt - albeit with much stronger violence. Once again, I do not see the entertainment value. It doesn't, IMO, contribute anything. Sure, there are nasty things in the world out there, do we really need to see them portrayed this realistically? Apart from that, this film is just a tired rehash of so many (superior) slasher flicks. *SPOILER* He even turns up in the back seat, yawn...
Impressive, but no fun.......2007-11-19
Not so much a horror as a video nasty, this is brutal, fearless filmmaking that's trying to push the boundaries. Although well filmed and acted, in the end its simply not enjoyable as a spectacle. Its remorselessness shows that the director has the courage of his convictions, but his attempt to raise its profile on the basis that its 'based on a true story' is just daft, exploitative bunkum. Great villain though.
Painfully boring .......2007-09-07
'Wolf Creek' begins when 3 backpackers out in the Australian out-back take a journey to a meteor crash site called Wolf Creek. The journey takes them a few days and generally they are having a good time. But once they get to their destination weird things begin to happen - none their watches are working and neither is their car. Stranded and in the middle of nowhere, they decide to stay the night in the car. Then they meet a friendly local who is more than happy to help them out, only to find out he is psychotic killer.
The plot is pretty much the same as we've all seen a hundred times before in films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Wrong Turn, The Hills Have Eyes and most recently (and most silmilar) Paradise Lost, the only difference being that this is set in Australia. There's not a lot of good points to highlight in this review as overall the movie is pretty bad. The characters become so annoying that you will actually want them to come to a gruesome end within about 10 minutes of the beginning. The film also is painfully slow getting starting. The three main characters do not actually meet the killer until about 45 minutes in, then it takes another 10 to 15 minutes to find out that he is a madman, so for a 90 minute film, it doesn't leave a lot of time for much action. I actually began to play on my PSP when I got about half an hour in as I was bored waiting for something to happen! And anyone who says this is a gore-filled bloodbath is lying. Other than three (short) bits that I can think of, there is next to no gory scenes at all. Ok, one of the characters has some blood over her, but it is hardly the shocking special effects I'd normally expect from this type of film.
Overall this is a very poor and very dull film which I cannot recommend at all. Do not believe the positive reviews on the cover - this is one of the worst horrors I've seen and one that is making the already tired slasher genre more and more stale each year. Also, the only interesting part (the possible alien activity with the watches) was unexplained and went nowhere. Very disappointing all round.
Avoid at all costs.
Surprisingly Good.......2007-07-07
The premise has been done to death: a group of young people encountering a crazed psychopath who proceeds to pick them off one by one. Yet in this 2005 Australian Horror, that old cliche actually works to satisyingly ghouslish effect.
Being that it is (alledgedly) based on a true story also adds further credibility, but that, combined with shady characterisation, gloomy sets, naturalistic acting and a gritty camera style means that this is a surprisingly worthwhile horror outing. The three young people in question, two young women and a young man, respond with understandable terror when an apparently harmless Aussie bloke turns psycho. And when I say psycho, I MEAN psycho. The violence is at time, horrendous, the sets are grimy and dank, and the entire atmosphere is one of sickening foreboding. Mercifully, the film also steers clear of the usual horror film cliches, including nudity, gratuitous sex and drug use, instead opting for a more naturalistic and direct approach.
The lack of Hollywood sheen and a great sense of atmosphere definitely go in the films favour and this is a truly horrifying horror film in an age where the horror is largely unimpressive. As is to be expected, there are truly violent moments and some pretty strong language too, but this is pretty much guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.
rubbish.......2007-06-01
what we have here folks is a terrible excuse for a horror film
its slow beyond understanding...which is just maddeningly frustrating...you dont care for the characters(in all honesty i hated them and wanted them to die horribly) this film really struggles to keep your attention as nothing happens and when the loony does show up and start to torture them its just pathetic....this film is for people who found films like saw uncomfortable
if you want death and violence and gore then you will be severely diappointed here....similarly if you want to be gripped and unerved by a film then again this film fails on all levels
if you want to be scared and shocked try swtchblade romance....or scared try silent hill or any of the above try any of the evil dead films...yes they may look dated but they have gotten this beaten on every level
this film really is terrible and what i find more horrifying is the fact that im never gonna get the 95 minutes that i spent watching it back!!!
avoid!!!!!!!!! really avoid!!!!!!!!!!!

it's ok.......2008-01-21
The film was ok, I wouldn't say that it's bad but it's not brilliant either. The fact that it was based on real life is scary and it acts as a cautionary tale, telling you not to trust strangers, no matter how nice they seem! A few scenes made me jump and the guy who acted the madman was good but the rest of the actors were mediocre.
In real life, only the man survived and no one has any idea what happened to the two women so the producers improvised that part of the story. They did an extremely bad job of it because the two women managed to escape their deranged captor, only to return to get a car????? Had I been in that suituation, I would have just run away, never to return!
The rest of the story was ok - the man escaped narrowly and it explained what happened to him in the end (in real life). I guess the only real point of the film is not to trust anyone who offers help...especially not in the middle of nowhere!
Fantastic Film.......2007-07-16
This is a great horror film and plays on the "what would you do, if it was you" concept.
Cannot understand idiots who tell people to stay away from these films, my wife does not like horror films, but hey, she does not watch them, there are many that love films like this and Hostel, The Hills Have Eyes etc.. more please more..
Truely awful film........2006-12-05
This is one of the worst films i've ever wasted my time watching. It has no real story and is badly acted. It is depressing to think that anyone would ever enjoy watching it or that anyone would think it was worth making. Don't waste your money on this boring drivel.
