As well as the EOS Integrated Cleaning System, the EOS 400D incorporates a number of developments over the EOS 350D. Resolution increases from 8.0 to 10.1 Megapixels, using the superior hi-sensitivity, hi-speed, low-noise CMOS technology now found in all six EOS Digital models. At nearly twice the size of the EOS 350D display, the 2.5? hi-resolution LCD is the brightest in the EOS range and now displays all of key shooting and user interface information along with image playback. The AF system expands from 7 to 9-point, with a highly sensitive f/2.8 center point for exceptional performance in low light. Even with the image resolution increase, maximum frame burst almost doubles from 14 to 27 large JPEGs and from 5 to 10 RAW.
The EOS 400D is the first camera to incorporate the EOS Integrated Cleaning System. Based on significant research into the causes of dust in D-SLR cameras, the system combats dust in three important ways: Reduce, Repel and Remove.
Internal camera mechanisms are designed to minimise dust generation. The body cap is redesigned to prevent dust generation through wear on the cap itself.
Anti-static technologies are applied to the low-pass filter covering the front of the s

What a great buy from Amazon.......2008-01-08
Advised by my son in US to purchase the EOS400d and have not regretted it for one minute. Good service from Amazon and all arrived promptly as advertised. Very quickly applied for and received the cash back from Canon which made the camera a bargain at £350. Lens suits me in a learning capacity Will possibly upgrade when knowledge and experience demand. Easy to operate and understand and have sent for DVD on camera to assist with knowledge and improve photos. At same time got the 430EX flashgun which obviously is a great improvement on the built in unit. All software loaded into home computer and just needs you to sit, study and learn to upload, store and print good quality photos. Have an Epson Stylus D68 PE printer which copes with printing demands from this camera
I do not think you need to look elsewhere for an extremely good, well made camera. Highly recommended.
a great camera for beginning enthuisasts.......2008-01-04
A really easy to use, reliable camera perfect for amateur enthusiasts and less experienced photographers. With a good range of modes such as portrait, landscape and macro, the camera also has more complex modes such as manual, aperture priority and shutter priority.
The camera is fairly small which can mean the controls are difficult to use but it is perfect for small hands. The weight is manageable and I have had no problems carrying the camera in my handbag.
The only letdown with the 400D is the standard lens which doesnt allow the camera to reach its full ability for capturing detail. A huge range of lenses are available for the EOS cameras but you may find these cost as much as the camera itself.
Very competent DSLR.......2007-12-30
I used to have an analogue SLR years ago, and digital compacts are never quite good enough. This Canon has all the amazing features you would have seen on professional level DSLRs only 3 years ago, and now we all have access to the same technology. I particularly liked the self-cleaning mechanism, if you choose to change lenses. And three shots per second is fantastic for moving events or family portraits.
I suggest you budget twice the cost of the camera. You will also need a high capacity memory card, a tripod, a longer lens and Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) to get the best out of the camera. You should also budget a lot of time - this camera is addictive!
Home Delivery Network saga.......2007-12-28
The camera I have purchased is no doubt a fine piece of equipment but I have recently lost faith in the delivery system that Amazon uses. I have ordered this camera within the final deadlines advertised by Amazon but I have had to be 'content' with a later date in January. Aside from this, other purchases for Christmas have failed to arrive within the delivery period from 'Home Delivery Network', the best bit being the excuses that are written on the cards left on the doorstep, especially as I have been in when the supposed delivery took place. At least Royal Mail admit when they have cocked up and give you the option of collecting your delivery within a sensible distance from where you live. In my case Home Delivery Network suggested I collect the delivery from a depot 50 mile away... perfect. I would appear that the High Street shops are cheaper. Jessops in this case.
Awful Experience with Ship Carrier Home Delivery Network Limited.......2007-12-19
I have been buying from Amazon for over 6 years and I have had no problems with receiving any of my purchases from other ship carriers except Home Delivery Network Limited. If anyone is looking into buying the Cannon EOS 400D Camera from Amazon, I would strongly advise to check which ship carrier is being used. In this case, my camera was dispatched from Amazon to Home Delivery Network Limited's Depot on 13th December 2007 and they claim (on the track order page) that they attempted delivery on 15th, 17th, 18th December 2007 when they blatantly have not. There has been someone at home all day on all three dates mentioned and they did not attempt delivery. When I looked on their website, they do not provide a telephone number for customers to contact them with regards to their parcels nor do they provide an e-mail address but a landline address to write to. They also claim on the website that if their delivery was not successful, they would leave a card with a telephone number on it to our mailboxes for us to arrange a convenient delivery time but I have checked everywhere in my building and I have not received a single card from them. When I found out their telephone number and called them, they were extremely unhelpful, when asked to speak to a manager, I was told that I would get a call back within 24 hours, which did not happen. I asked if they could arrange for the driver to call us an hour before making delivery to make sure someone is home, they said that they do not have contact with the driver whatsoever. I made another phone call on the same day (18th) in the afternoon at 5pm to Home Delivery Network Limited to find out the whereabouts of my camera, they claimed that it would arrive by 7pm and by 6pm when I tracked the order online it said that the parcel has arrived back in the depot after delivery attempts at 5.03pm and 5.27pm. I have checked my postal address with them again and I have checked my intercom phone and found no failure and I have not had a problem with anything delivered to my address for the past 3 years either. So I made another phone call to them at 3pm today on 19th December 2007, they told me that there is 'delay in delivery due to external factors' because their van broke down and I would not be receiving my parcel today and asked to speak to the manager, no managers were available as they are out doing the deliveries themselves (then why am I not getting my parcel today?). I was very happy to find out the great price for this camera on amazon and the GBP50 cash back from Cannon (offer ends on 31st December) but at this stage I don't think I would get my camera before that, I am left feeling very helpless and disappointed. Home Delivery Network Limited even suggested that I am lying when I or other members of my family have been home for all the days that they claim they have attempted deliveries. Great price it might be, no point if you don't ever get the camera, especially when I need it for art projects.

great camera.......2007-05-11
Great camera but buy the 400d now, beware tho-once you start using the camera more and more you will want to buy more and more lenses. Go for IS lenses if you want to shoot wildlife or sporting events. I have a 350d and have just bought the 400d, i photograph whales and dolphins but my husband is a birdwatcher and always wants the camera to shoot birds- even tho he said he wasn't interested when i bought the 350d. Now we have both we fight over the 100-400 IS zoom lens!
User friendly!.......2007-03-13
Nice, user friendly camera. Better to download drivers from Canon uk site than to use the CD supplied (I use XP and it was a real pain). Very happy with the camera - not so happy that I have found another drain for my hard earned cash - the 18-55mm lens is very nice but I wanted a decent macro lens...you can see how it goes!
I've had some very nice results with this camera - and thats without playing with all of the "clever" bits.
If your looking for a camera that is going to keep you going for a good few years - instead of buying the next "big deal" every few months - this is, IMHO, the ticket.

Shame about the lens.......2007-12-01
I've been using this camera for a few months now and am getting to grips with the excellent range of facilities it offers. It's fine straight out of the box but dipping into the manual (a bit small - I have to put on my reading glasses) reveals a very adaptable and versatile system.
However, how a company like Canon had the gall to include such a poor lens is beyond comprehension. The barrel distortion is truly breathtaking and it can't even maintain an approximate focus across zoom settings.
So get the camera, you're unlikely to be disappointed in the body, but put a better lens on your wish-list!
Love it ..........2007-11-19
I was given this camera as a present (lucky me!)I had only used handbag sized cameras before. The camera is a great size - I have small hands and it's not too heavy. I take it almost everywhere and even though I am only an enthusiastic amateur have been able to take some great shots. I would recommend it to anyone.
Excellent Camera.......2007-08-22
I bought this just before the 400D was announced but don't regret it at all. Like other reviewers I bought a second lens and stuck with Canon for that too. So many people have commented on it there's not much point in adding to what's already beed said. The only thing I would add though is that because the camera is so light, I find that I shake it when I take photographs. That's me and not the camera because if I use a tripod pics are perfect. I need to get an IS lens now I think. That apart, it's excellent for me.
Brilliant.......2007-08-21
What a brilliant camera.
I have owned this camera for 2 years.
Excellent picture quality with both manual and auto modes.
It has excellent build quality. I have had no problems with it in 2 years.
The Eos 350d is a very fast camera in both good and poor light. It will take 3 photos per second in normal light conditions.
The enclosed lens is OK, but better photos can be achieved by changing lenses.
Download to the PC can be achieved easily with the enclosed canon software, but I prefer to use Google Picasa (Having used photoshop elements and album 2.0). The 8MP CCD gives plenty of scope for cropping and editing photos.
This camera will meet your needs if you want to just take simple pictures or get more involved in amateur photography.
Brilliant camera, brilliant price.......2007-08-09
I've had my 350D for just under a year now and I am still amazed by the quality of the photos it produces.
Many people put down cameras like this one and the 400D because of their cropped sensors but to be honest I find that the 1.6 conversion factor is a good thing. I mainly shoot sports and the cropped sensor makes my 300mm lens into a 480mm lens which is perfect. When I do shoot wide angle the 17-40mm f/4L is wide enough but if you want it wider there are 10-20mm lenses out there. So for me its wide enough and I can zoom in far enough thanks to the cropped sensor.
The 18-55mm lens kit that comes with the camera is rubbish to say the least so its worth spending a few hundred quid on something with quality.(I bough the 17-40mm f/4 L for about £350 which, although is the same price as the camera, is definitely worth it).
The build quality of the camera is superb (something common of all EOS cameras) and so is the menu system. The built in flash is poor but does anyone actually use it; it makes all photos look cold and artificial. Performance even at ISO 1600 is pretty good with some noise but not a damaging amount.
While the settings on the wheel are good for beginners you only get the most out of the camera if you use one of the manual settings, it takes a while to master but the results are much better. Although the screen is only 1.5" this isnt a problem as the photos are still easily viewable.
Many people will be pondering over the question of either buying the 350D or spending a bit more on the 400D. I personally dont think its worth spending an extra £100 on 1) a bigger screen (this ones fine) 2) 2 more mega pixels (8mp is enough for anything up to A3; surely enough for most people?!) and 3) a self integrated cleaning system. These things dont get dirty that easily and if they do you can clean the sensor quite easiy. Save the hundred quid and put it towards a nice lens.
You won't regret buying this camera. I didn't.
