Wildlife shots should never be missed.......2008-01-09
The camara is great, I have stepped up from a 350d and used to use a EOS3 in the days when slide film was the best I could find.
If your going to use it to do wildlife photography the camera is unbeatable for the money, at 6 FPS you should never miss a shot and with such a large LCD screen it is so easy to check the shot is in focus whilst in the feild any mistakes can be corrected there and then. A 4GB card will still hold over 1000 shot in high setting (not RAW)
I am really pleased with this Chritmas present to myself and am now trying to pursuade somebody else to buy one... Canon have done a great job with this one.
It helps having great lenses (which Canon are also very good at) but having a great camera behind them is very important, if you really care how the pictures are going to come out this is a great machine for the enthusiast.
Shutter Noise.......2007-12-28
This is not a full review as such, more of an addition to what has already been said.
One issue regarding noise, there is one mode for silent shooting.
Live View mode also includes new Silent Shooting, which is made possible by an electronic 1st-curtain shutter on the CMOS sensor that enables shooting with the mechanical shutter completely open. Since there is no shutter cocking noise, operation is almost completely silent.
Thinking about a 400D - stump up the extra..........2007-11-10
I've been using digital cameras for years right back to an epson model that recorded at 640*480 and looked like a brick and more recently I've worked my way through the SLR type Lumix range. But I have to admit that I've stayed loyal to my film SLR because I didn't want to make an expensive mistake.
However I bought a 400D at the beginning of the year and I is fantastic, so happy with digital I decided I needed a backup. Saw the 40D on Amazon for £730 plus £50 cash back from Canon and it's suddenly only £150ish more than I paid for my 400D.
I was worried that this was just going to be the big brother of the 400D and I wasn't going to get much for the extra money. But no worries here - the 40D is head and shoulders above what now feels like a very consumer orientated 400D.
It's a big camera, no hiding it this won't fit in your pocket, but it is extremely comfortable to hold and much easier to handle than the 400D. The setup is simpler in many ways with two wheels, but if you're a novice and this is your first DSLR you need to spend a day or two with the instruction manual taking so creative shots to see what it can do.
The shutter noise is fairly loud, but it is a muffled loud if that makes sense so it's not too noticeable. Continuous shooting is a dream with 8 shots off in next to no time if you want it, at the slower mode you get about a dozen continuous shots before the camera slows down.
I've only shot RAW and I'm impressed with the quality of the images, excellent colour and very little noise. Note that RAW doesn't work on OS X 10.4.10 yet so you'll have to wait for the 10.4.11 update, use the Canon software (I use Aperture) or upgrade to OS X 10.5.
Overall this is a very solid investment. If you're going to spend a decent amount of money on a DSLR consider this over the 400D. Don't worry about the 10mp rating either - I print out on A2 paper and there is no visible loss of quality and my customers are very happy with the results.
I'm very happy with my purchase and will be even happier when Canon send me my £50 :)
fantastic for astrophotography........2007-10-19
I h`ven`t owned a dslr before, I`ve made do with my old film slr, a sony compact, and a dedicated ccd for astroimaging. The specs I wanted in order were-
1. Reasonable price
2. Live view for focussing
3. low noise at high iso`s
I scoured the forums, and took advice from all the local camera shops, and a semi-pro friend- who first off said " buy a canon", as did all of the astroimaging forums!
First night with my scope was a joy to use, although when using a T mount, watch the camera labs video on you tube- as theres a tip at the end.Good sharp in focus pics with live view, very little noise at high iso`s.
I`m now using it much more for landscapes and portraits than astrophotopgraphy, the quality of pictures and ease of use are just superb, only downside is no live view in the point and shoot modes.
It really is true is that with a dslr once it`s in the hand you can tell which one is "right", as I had contemplated the cheaper olympus e 510 with live view, the canon just feels more substantial.
Really would recommend this camera for all users of dslrs, as whilst i`m no pro, it ticks all the boxes, and feels that it will last for years.
30d to 40d that is the question?.......2007-10-16
Owning a 30D and being impressed, to upgrade to the 40D did not seem logical. After a rush of blood to the head I did. Wow, I have read other reviews and the comments on the metering would only be noticed by pro's. As a keen amateur this camera ticks all the boxes. I along with others were expecting the 400D in a magnesium body, what we have is a cut down D1. The menu's are much easier to navigate and the results so far are excellent even up to A3. The "live view" is fine if you are using a tripod, in manual focus mode its tricky to compose at 10x zoom. Having said that, linked to your PC using the monitor to compose pictures its amazing. The sensor cleaner is a good addition but as others have said is it a gimmick? I feel though expecting more pixal's (12m+) I don't feel dissapointed. The new Nikon's will have HDMI connections but we are talking about cameras here so are they necessary. I brought the package with the 17-85 is usm lens kit, a very capable lens at a good package price price. When the 30D's are all sold out and the price falls into line, the 40D will be the camera to own. Don't forget the cashback offer.

My first Digital SLR.......2007-12-28
After doing much research I decided on the Canon EOS 40D,I have only had it for a few weeks but can say with out reservation it is a real joy to use.
I have used 35mm SLRs for many years and would describe my self as an happy amature.at first the handbook seemed a little overwelming but after working through it and trying settings as I went I soon had a reasonable grasp of the basics[unlike film you can click away without wastage].
The camera has real solid feel to it and is very comfortable to hold and the buttons and dials are in easy to use positions.
The 3 inch screen is beautiful and clear and as a glasses wearer the diopler adjustment really helps.
the lens works well with no problems so far with focusing in low or bright light, the view through the view finder is very clear and uncluttered with all the info nice and clear.
all together a very good quality camera which I have no regrets buying and i am looking forward to the better weather when it will be getting much more use.
I have only given this camera 4 stars as I am not qualified or knowlegable enough to say it is perfect.
I would recommend to anyone planning to start out with a canon DSLR or even a present owner the magazine 'PHOTOPLUS' which is dedicated to the Canon Camera only so everything they print is relevent to you.
