Ideal starter camera.......2007-04-13
I have owned the Canon A430 digital camera for about six months and I use it at least once a week. So far it's been a pleasure to use and I particularly like the different shooting modes. Although a little bulky and heavy, I would still recommend this as a good starter camera for anyone considering purchasing their first digital camera. One tip: get a larger memory card (e.g. 1GB SD card) and a set of rechargeable batteries (Uniross 2500mAh Ni-MH AA are the ones I use and they last for ages) as regular batteries will fade very quickly.
Very easy to use. .......2007-02-27
Before I bought this camera, I owned a Powershot S20 for 5 years. Before that I had a Sureshot so I have been using Canons for many years.
The Powersot S20 was very fiddly to use and the battery usage was horrendous. What we wanted was a small, light "point and shoot" camera that we could use anywhere. That's why we bought the A430 and I have to say we are delighted with it.
The A430 uses normal AA batteries which is very convenient. It is very "intuitive " to use and it gives really good results. You can also make short video clips with sound.
I can thoroughly recommend this camera.
Quality Camera.......2007-01-25
I bought this camera as my second camera - I have a digtal SLR and needed a small pocket sized point and shoot. This camera fits the bill perfectly.
Excellent picture quality for the money - better than that of many more expensive cameras.
Simple to use - even my wife has shown an interest!
The only bad thing I have to say about the camera is that it is power hungry. The batteries that came with it didn't last very long. My advice is invest in rechargeables - lots available on Amazon.
One last thing - get a bigger memory card. All in all a great buy.
Fantastic performance for the money.......2007-01-04
We bought this camera for our 10 yr old daughter and we've all been highly impressed by the results. There are excellent features for the money (4x optical zoom, use of AA batteries, auto-rotation of portrait images, in-camera panorama stitch, very easy to use, excellent Cannon software, optical viewfinder as well as LCD screen). The camera gives very good results indoors and outdoors on it's point and shoot mode, and there are a number of manual features accessible if you want them. Superb build quality - not the most compact model in the world and it is only 4MP, but in terms of value for money it is truly outstanding.
Superb.......2006-12-28
What a fab little camera. Canon have, again, pulled out the stops. I bought this as a cheap, easy, simple alternative to a 35mm film camera whilst on holiday. I didn't want to buy anything too expensive just in case of loss or damage, but I did want quality and value. I found exactly that with this camera. The large LCD screen is superb. The menus and options are great. Use of standard AA batteries is a huge bonus (as they are readily available everywhere!). The zoom is good. Its well manufactured and impact resistant (I've dropped it already!). And most importantly, the end result is superb photos.
To make this camera totally worthwhile, I recommend you buy an additional 1GB SD card and a stack of AA batteries. Why... because the included SD card will take about 20 photos before it's full, and because the camera is so brilliant you'll want to take loads of photos which requires additional batteries. I DO NOT recommend you use rechargeable batteries, just buy a bulk pack of energiser or duracell as these will give your camera that tiny bit more responsiveness. A lot of friends have snubbed the fact that this model can only take a maximum of 4 mega pixels pictures. Frankly this is ample and anything more would suck the memory from my computer let alone the camera.
So... a few extras and the camera has 6 stars! At the end of the day, for the piece and spec, you won't/can't go far wrong.

Great camera especially for beginners.......2006-12-21
I bought this as a gift for my parents and they love it. I was looking for an entry level digital camera which is easier to operate not too many complex settings, etc etc and especially with a video output and all these with AA battery. Spot on. The quality is great as you would expect from Canon. It has nice little features like if you rotate the camera after taking a picture, the picture rotates on the screen! The only thing which I hate a bit is the time taken to save the picture on to the SD card. This may be due to the card I am using (which is a Sandisk 256MB). Other than that, it is a perfect camera with great features and neat looks. Go for it!
Fantastic camera.......2006-12-05
I was really really surprised by how good this camera is. I bought it as a replacemnt for the BENQ one I bought a few mths earlier which developed a fault.
The pcitures are really good - had no blurry shots yet and the shutter delay is really short for a standard digital camera - about 1 second which is fine for taking photos of my fast moving toddler.
The video clips you can record are as good as others I have tried and have different settings so you can take a large movie or a smaller one with better quality picture. There is sound playback on the camera as well as when you upload to pc.
There are some great features such as portait mode, firework mode, night mode etc. and you can even take a picture keeping one chosen colour in or switch it for a different colour.
The software supplied has some nice features - stitch assist helps you to take several pictures and blend them into one long panoramic picture.
I am really pleased with this camera.
Better than my A60!.......2006-09-18
Bought this for my wife and I'm jealous! It's much smaller and lighter than my A60, and better. Here's why:
COMPACT SIZE.
It uses only 2 AA batteries (A60 uses 4) and SD card (A60 uses compact flash) which helps keep it's size and weight down.
INSTANT RESPONSE
I can't detect any shutter lag, and the camera is ready to use as soon as it's powered up - quicker than the A60
1.8 INCH SCREEN
Compared to the A60, it seems a much bigger screen, although in dimensions (1.8 vs 1.5) it
EASY TO USE
Simple modes and operation. No, it doesn't have shutter priority or aperture priority modes, but it has dawned on me that I have never used these modes on my A60 in 3 years of ownership......
NO RED-EYE
I cannot see any red-eyes in any of the pics, which is an improvement on many pics that I have taken with my A60 which have been blighted by red-eye (easily removable using PC but better if it never occurs). I think that the orange pre-flash is brighter on the A430 so reduces pupil size better.
VIDEO WITH AUDIO (SAME AS A60)
Yes, the A60 had the same video capability with audio, and both the A430 and the A60 have the all-important audio recording, with a SPEAKER for onboard playback (why do so many other cameras not have a speaker for playback on the camera?).
DELIVERY
Bought it Monday and received Friday afternoon - that's with Super Saver Delivery. Excellent service from Amazon. Most places only offer free delivery (if at all) with orders over £100, but this camera was £90 so would not have qualified for free delivery with other retailers.
SUMMARY
Great camera. Buy one.

CANON POWERSHOT A430 RED.......2006-09-16
This is an excellent camera.I also own the A410 model, and thought i'd upgrade to the A430.it is £30 cheaper than the A410,it comes in a range of colours, has 4MP resolution,a 4x optical zoom, and movies with sound.
Images are excellent-even in low light using the auto flash (which you can override).colours, contrast, detailed pictures-are all superb.focusing is extremely quick and accurate with a green square(s) appearing in on the lcd screen to show you what is being focused on before the picture is taken.battery life (i use 2xNiMH 2600mAH rechargables) last for ages.
forget the supplied 16MB MM card provided, and get a 512MB SD or 1GB SD memory card and you can take hundreds of high resolution images.
Canon Powershot...it does what is says on the tin!
Decent value.......2006-03-27
It's a doddle to use and produces very decent results. It was bought as a family snaps replacement for a much-used and abused Canon A60. Compared to the A60, the 430's focusing and flash performances are a revelation. Much, much better. In good light it produces excellent results. Flash photos are fine. I've printed up to 10x8 with no complaints. The only niggle is that on auto in low light it tries to compensate with high asa values and the results can be apallingly grainy. Luckily you can easily get arround that by switching to manual and setting asa values yourself. The movie mode is rather clunky and basic at 10fps on 640 but smaller size movies are much smoother. The sound quality is decent. All in all, I'm very pleased with it. (And the red matches my wife's car). Now if only they could sell one of these for the same price but make it water, sand and shockproof too..
