A versatile compact.......2008-01-04
I bought the S5 last year, having previously owned the S3is. Overall, the camera has met my expectations. OK, its not as good as a full DSLR, but at less than half the price of a DSLR + lens, it is good value as a versatile point and shoot.
Pros -
Looks like a real SLR!
Easy to handle
Excellent zoom range
Wide angle and tele lens are available to extend the zoom even further
Light enough to easily carry on your shoulder
Very good image quality at low ISO. I enlarge to A4 size and and am pleased with the results
Uses standard AA batteries which you can buy anywhere
Decent recycling time on the built in flash
Has a number of different photo modes if you want to experiment
Hot shoe is a nice feature
Viewing screen is good (much better than S3)
Cons -
The supplied memory card is far too small, be prepared to buy a bigger card. I use the Sandisk Extreme III 2gb card.
Not good in poor light - like many compacts, photo quality suffers as the ISO increases
Too big to just slip into your pocket (if that matters to you)
Tips
Buy a case for it!
Be prepared to invest in a dedicated flashgun if you do a lot of indoor photography in big rooms
Buy a bigger memory card
Best Camera I Have Owned so far!.......2007-12-29
Absolutly amazing camera, with great 12x optical zoom lens! Easy to use navigation on various menu's etc on the camera help to allow you to quickly set up the right settings for your photo. Video option is also very good for a digital camera, better than some digital video recorders out just now!
Good camera but with better alternatives!.......2007-12-26
I got this camera few months ago after doing lots of research. It is well made and packed with many exiting features with relatively good picture quality and easy to use manual controls. However I expected more from this camera than what it offered me such as the picture quality. Ever since I brought this camera I started to regret the fact that I didn't buy a SLR because the price difference is not massive. The size is also the same and you can't take both in night outs. and when compared with a digital SLR there is a massive difference in the quality even when auto mode is used.
Due to these reasons I got a Canon 400D which I'm currently in love with, even though I'm a amateur and got a cash back from canon which made it cheap. I wouldn't recommend to purchase this product as there is no need of a point and shoot camera this big as there are SLR's for nearly the same price with a much better value.
Good Camera - Just Don't Expect Too Much.......2007-12-08
I previously owned and used a Canon G5, which is a great camera. The PowerShot S5IS has some more up-to-date features, such as face recognition and a bigger viewing screen plus more pixels. The biggest plus for me is the larger screen, which makes composing a shot much easier. However, while its construction is perfectly OK, it does not 'feel' as well-built as my old G5 and nor does it seem as robust. Picture quality is also good but it does struggle a more in poorer light conditions where "noise" is more apparent. I have found battery life quite acceptable provided you buy and use the higher capacity rechargeable batteries. I also miss not having a printed manual or handbook, though the one provided by Canon with the camera on a CD is clear and well-written. All-in-all, for the general user, a good camera for the money with all of today's popular-camera features.
Excellent upgrade.......2007-11-25
Used the Canon S2 for over 2 years and took thousands of shots with it until the shutter release died. The S5 is quicker, has much improved resolution, an excellent bigger twist and tilt LCD screen and additional features to the S2. Image quality might not be as good as an SLR but its compact, can take macro shots from 0mm and zooms to 432mm. How much extra gear would one have to buy and carry with an SLR to match that? At less than £240 street price its hard to beat. I found batterry life good and, as it is uses 4AA's, cheap to buy and carry replaceable NiMh batteries.

Camera only bag.......2007-12-28
I read the reviews but still proceeded and bought the case. I have had Canon soft cases in the past and they suited my purpose.
Negative : This case IS small - no arguments - you cannot just put the camera strap on the top and zip it closed as it will not close. I found that the strap must be 'fitted' down the side of the lense housing.
Positive : The case looks strong and I believed it is designed to be a belt mounted case, (belt loop on the back). It has a velcro flap which comes from the back over to the top and this will take the strain off the zip.
Conclusion : The case will protect the camera and if you like the idea of a belt mounted camera then it does fit the bill. But, if you take a lot of single photos you will get tired of the fuss of repacking that strap. (The case has a double zip, so you could leave the camera straps out of the side of the case, not pretty, but the camera is protected.)
DOES WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO.......2007-06-23
As others have said, the DCC-90 case doesn't have space for accessories, but as a quick release soft case for protecting the S2/S3 whilst you're carrying it it is ideal. It's a bit of a squeeze but the strap will fit in OK, I prefer to leave the case on (using the velcro fastener) to protect the camera whilst I'm carrying it on the neck strap. The price is great for a genuine Canon case too, a Canon Ixus case I bought a while back cost me over £30.
Small but 'best fit' for the camera.......2007-06-19
I was looking to get a small case for the S3 IS (I don't need a bulky camera bag for a point and shoot - defeats the purpsoe). I didn't think I would be able to find an exact match to the contours of the camera without having to buy a Canon case (having had a brief look in local shops). So took a chance on this one given the reviews.
I found the camera case to be an 'exact' match to the camera. There is no room to move and little to no room for additional items (buy a 2GB+ SD card and you won't need to pack another, I don't plan to pack spare batteries in the case). Regarding the strap on first attempt I didn't think the strap would fit in the case but after another go it does.
If you are looking for a small case to compliment your camera - given the reduced price on Amazon, I would recommend it.
Not 5 stars because the material could be slightly heavier duty.
Too small to be usable.......2007-04-12
The case is better than some I've had in the past, at least it keeps closed and there is little chance of the camera falling out (which once happened with a Kodak camera and case I had). Other than that, it's *way* too small and it's a struggle to even store the strap never mind spare batteries or cards.
Just a bit too tight.......2007-02-25
A nice little case but, like nearly everyone else says, too small to get the camera strap in. I'd be much happier to be able to have the strap fitted to the camera to hold on to as I extract it from the case. You can get the strap in but it is really tight on the camera, or you can have it hanging out which makes it look like you bought the wrong bag.

Product Description
Perhaps the most surprising of Canon's PowerShot announcements is the SX100, the first in a new series of budget super zoom compact digital cameras. The PowerShot SX100 IS features a 10x optical zoom lens with optical Image Stabilizer, 8.0 Megapixel image sensor (1/2.5") and DIGIC III processor. It's also got face detection (of course) and a full complement of auto and manual exposure modes, plus a 2.5" LCD screen (there is no eye level viewfinder). It's not the prettiest camera Canon has ever made but it has a suprisingly comprehensive spec for a 'budget' model.
Unbeatable Canon image quality
The compact 10x optical zoom lens is based on the proven lens configuration of the PowerShot S5 IS, with the number of moving lens elements kept to a minimum to ensure faster, power efficient operation. A 35mm film equivalent focal length of 36-360mm, gives the PowerShot SX100 IS an ideal zoom range for school sports days, family holidays or wildlife adventures. Canon?s lens-shift type optical Image Stabilizer ? first developed for Canon?s market-leading EF lenses used with professional EOS SLR cameras ? is incorporated to counteract the effects of camera shake in low light conditions and at full zoom. A second line of defence against camera shake is Auto ISO Shift, which can be selected by the user to boost the ISO setting just enough to combat the effects of unintended camera movement. Two further ISO features ? manually selected high ISO settings up to ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto ? combat the blur caused by typical subject movement, as well as camera shake when low light conditions would normally require a longer exposure.

Customer Reviews:
I love it.......2008-01-02
I bought this camera the other day. I had an old Kodak digital camera from years ago with about 3mp's and I wanted to upgrade when my Kodak conked out. I spoke to people in several shops and looked at many internet reveiws before I bought this camera and I established that I would buy a Canon of some kind. I am so impressed. I wanted something compact but bigger than a credit card (I like to be able to hold the camera), and also something with which I could experiment with and have some kind of control over the image. The photo's are great when you are just snapping at family events and also when you feel like getting a bit more creative. I love it and I can't wait to take more photo's and spend more time playing with all the settings.
Excellent!.......2007-11-26
I bought this camera to take on a trip to Egypt as it had all of the bits and bobs I required in a digital camera.I wanted easy, fast, not too big to cart around with me and good quality pics, this camera delivers all of that and more.
I could ramble on for ages but I don't need to,out of eleven people and cameras this one did the best job,so much so in fact that I put all of my photos onto an online photo album when I got home so that my friends could get the photos their cameras weren't capable of taking, much to their delight.
I love my camera.Love it,love it,love it!
Great camera.......2007-11-17
After trying out a Fuji and a Kodak and having to return them both for awful picture quality I finally struck lucky with this one.
This camera is easy to use and very compact whilst also having great zoom capabilities and extra features.
Picture quality is great and I am very happy with it. It takes lovely portrait shots. Another great feature is how quickly it takes the photos, there is very little delay as with some digital cameras.
The video quality is also excellent.
The main thing I was looking for in a camera was the quality of the images it produced for digital editing purposes and this camera certainly passes the test - especially in good light conditions.
