I was a little sceptical about buying this product, as it seemed a little bit cheap and cheerful. However, the seller (EW Link) were good, and the item arrived within 2 days, and was well packaged.

Using the item is child's play. Simply plug in the supplied power supply to your old hard drive that you want to connect. Then plug the supplied ATA connector into the hard drive, and plug the other end into your USB port. Within seconds Windows XP recognised the drive. I was able to copy off the files I wanted and then start formatting the drive within about 2 minutes (no more than) of unpacking the goods.

Nice bit of kit, and the seller proved to be very good.

Ifyou've got an old hard drive buy this........2007-11-25

I recently had to buy a new computer and soon aftre doing so I discovered this product. I now have the old 60gb internal drive attached to a USB port on my new computer, and it works a treat. I have extracted all the old data that I wanted to keep and reformatted the old drive, giving me the full 60gb extra space.

The adaptor has it's own power supply and a plug to go into the power socket on the IDE driver.There is a cable with an IDE connector one end and a USB connector the other, just plug it all in and off you go !!

A Cheap Solution.......2007-10-21

I looked around for a cheap option to use my spare SATA drive as storage and this was the best I could find at a decent price.
Basically it does what it is supposed to do. The cable setup inside the enclosure could be better, and a few pence spent on a stand would have been nice. All the internal and external cables are supplied
It takes 5 mins to open the case, install the drive, reassemble and connect to the PC, you now have more storage.
If the cable management inside was better I would have given this a 5 despite the faulty USB cable and the two pin plug.

it does the job but...............2008-01-07

OK, this is a really cheap piece of kit and it did the job I bought it for so I have no gripes on that front, however I have one or two observations to make.
1. the housing itself is very robust but the screws to secure the fascia giving access to the inside were poor quality turning to mash straight away so it is now a `push fit' operation to close the unit.
2. first time out I could just about get the fascia off to get access to the inside of the unit without breaking it - I suspect that if you go as far as fully inserting a hard disk, it will be for keeps; unless you push the whole lot out from the other end which will probably damage the unit.
To finish, if you are going to install a drive and leave it alone, this is the right piece of kit at a very keen price, if like me you want to use the kit for data recovery etc. involving regularly installing and removing disks - keep looking!

I was about to buy 3 of these, and saw that I was being charged 4.99 per Product for STANDARD delivery bringing a total of 15 quid to put it int the royal mail! you can get much cheaper drives on amazon than the actual cost of this which is 7 pounds.

Excellent light weight enclosure.......2007-12-07

I bought this to convert a laptop drive into some extra storage for my Eee. Works wonderfully well. When I first opened the box I noticed there weren't any instructions and I was a little miffed. Then I realised how easy it was to slap together, so no problem.

What also helped was that it was delivered pretty speedily. All in all, an excellent product. Fully portable too, just don't throw it around!

It works straight out of the box: I just put a 2.5" drive in the case, plugged the case into a USB slot (using the supplied cable) and it worked. As easy as that. Sure, it's not built to withstand heavy treatment but then you don't throw your hard drives around that much. Do you?? Will buy a couple more.

Had a few spare 2.5" disks lying around from old laptops, and wanted to convert them to external USB disks. Unbelievable price, works in a few minutes. The case is clearly not shock-proof, so no throwing around of the disk, but for 1.99£, what more can you expect? Will probably buy a few more.

Fiddley to install.......2007-11-25

An exellent sound card, really good quality sound, you wont need better unless your planning to run a recording studio :P . Took about 5 seconds to bung it in the PCI slot, and all night trying to install the software! The jacks dont seem to fit the speaker or headphones properly, the auto install diddn't work on my windows XP, (the installation file u want is in Cmi8738, then click on the appropriate folder for your windows type, took me ages to find it). THEN, u have to fiddle about with all the settings in the sound panel to make sure its set up for headphones or whatever (use the green jack)...lol hard work but admittedly worth it for this price ^_^ still v happy.

Great Value.......2007-09-04

I bought this card soon after buying my logitech x-540 speakers (which I highly reccomend.) For a few days I was running them on the onboard sound card and I decided I needed something better. The card arrived within reasonable time and in good condition. However there were no written insturctions on how to install it into the PCI slot, so if I had not known how already this could have been a problem The only written instructions were a receipt sized peice of paper with very vague and barley comprihensible instructions regarding the drivers. Also I was dissapointed with the installation of the drivers. I had to go into the cd via 'my computer', and search through a few folders to find the install program. The last setback is that there is not enough space between the input sockets. I had to cut some of the rubber on the sides of the input jack off on my speaker inputs to get a comfortable fit.

Now onto the praise: When I got everything in and working and switched the default input hardware around via the control panel I was astounded by the quality of the sound. For such a cheap card it is brilliant, with very clear high and mid pitch and throbbing base. It is miles and miles better than the onboard. I expect the card could have made my altec lansing speakers, so old the prototype was probably carved out of wood with a sharpened flint, sound great.

So to summarise:
Sound / Value for money = 10
Ease of use and intallation = 6
Build = 6

Quite a pretty little ornament for anyone who has Vista because it sits there and does nothing. No software updates available or at least none I have been made aware of.

Over heating !!!.......2007-11-12

It works fines with earphone and microphone but it dangerously over heated (plastic cover melted!) when I connected output to my hifi stereo amplifier. I noticed something went wrong when sound quality got very bad and I burnt my fingers trying to unplug the module. Surprisingly, it worked fine again with headphone when cool again.

I bought this module some time ago to reduce number of wires plugged directly to my laptop (basically have just one usb hub plugged to laptop). I used it for a while with headphone for Skype but then reverted to built-in sound card, as I need to plug hifi to built-in card anyway.

Giving it 2 stars as it can still be handy with headphone, but I'm very very disappointed!

The stereo output sounds good on headphones, but the input only appears to be mono.

i recieved it within 4 days plugged it in and the thing didnt work. It came up with a error message reading, "error with usb plug in". I am still waiting to hear from the company that sold it to me through amazon. I will update this review when i hear from them. They are not as quick to reply to a problem as they are to take your money.

Remarkable piece of kit!.......2007-08-23

I was always having problems setting up my sound card on the computer and I wanted to be able to use my earphones and mic on my laptop when away from home. Then I saw these USB adaptors on Amazon and it's now so simple, as you just plug it into the USB socket and off you go. It has saved me having to mess about at the back of my computer. I didn't even need to install the driver CDROM which came with it.

Exceptional value and it works straight out of the box.

Boss Videos And Music.......2008-01-13

This is a perfect addition for anyone who has a laptop hard drive and wants to use it for a external hard drive. I use it for my music and video collection and thats all. It has a 160gb drive in it and it turned out cheaper than a standard 60gb drive lol It is extreamly small (practly the same size as the drive) and requires no plug to the wall, this said it does require two usb ports. The transfer isnt that fast, the fastest I got was only 10mb which isnt a problem to me as I use it for music and video. It is perfect for my needs hence the five star rating and saved me a couple of hundred pounds. The only thing I dont like about it is that it wont work on my xbox 360.

Cheap but Quality!.......2007-11-11

First time plug and play and it works perfectly. As i had a spare laptop IDE hard drive, i decided to buy the item to make use of that old HD i have. Amazingly the HD still works and even better for such a cheap price the item got delivered at around 3 days and then worked like a charm. Since then, it has been hooked to my pc and so far so good.
