Superb camera let down by software.......2006-01-11
The Dx6490 is a great little camera. Good quality lens with great zoom capabilities. The picture quality is exceptional, easily good enough for 10 x 8 prints.
There's very little lag betwean operating the shutter and image capture and the controls, with the exception of the on/off programme dial on the back of the camera are easy to use.
HOWEVER, THERE IS ONE HUGE LET DOWN, the software supplied with camera is horrendous.
It frequently fails to start when the computer is turned on, which means having a long wait whilst the programme repairs itself. You then have to go on-line and re-enter all your details into the Kodak Easyshare system. It will drive you mad!
The other infuriating thing about it is that if you have already got jpg images saved on your hard drive, the Kodak Easyshare programme attaches itself to these. It's about the worst piece of software that I have ever come across and has completely destroyed a good experience of using a superb camera.
For this reason, I would not recommend it.
Poor Kodak follow-up.......2005-11-28
The DX6490 is an excellent camera -kodak have chosen well with the optics system. I was initially pleased with the camera.
However, after 13 months (ie just out of warranty), the display screen failed. Kodak don't want to know (unless you send sufficient money to virtually buy a new unit). I can't say I am impressed and, although the camera is technically good, I wouldn't want to recommend this product

Although compact and simple to use, I found it almost impossible
to get a clear image at 8x % above optical zoom without a tripod. also inlow light the auto focus isn't really up to scratch. Also suffers from lots of noise in low light situations. On the plus side, the camera is very user friendly and well laid out. Image quality in good light is fair, but the image sensor is not as effective or as sharp as equivalent fuji models.
Very Good Camera.......2005-11-13
This camera is simply great value for money. It offers something for everyone. It has fully automatic features for taking snap shots, and has fully manual settings for when you want to be more creative. The camera also takes Multimedia Cards and Secure Digital Cards, so you can take higher quality photographs, and not have to worry about the memory filling up, and with the price of MMC and SD cards coming down in price all the time, there is no reason not to take loads of photographs. It also looks the part with its black casing and easy to use controls. One nifty feature of the camera is the "night vision" type of thing, for taking photographs in low light. Having previously owned a Kodak LS433 camera i found taking photographs in low light quite troublesome, as it was almost impossible to see anything through the viewfinder, and the display couldn't pick anything up in low light either. The DX 6490 overcomes this brilliantly. There is also a port for a standard external flash unit. In good light conditions, it also takes pretty decent Quicktime movies.
Some bad points on the camera. You might find focusing a bit of a problem at times, as there is no manual focus. Don't expect to be able to just slip this camera into your pocket when you going out, as it is quite bulky compared to some other cameras in this price range. Recharging the batter can also be a bit of a pain, as the basic package doesnt come with a docking cradle or an adapter for charging. In order to recharge the battery you have to remove it from the camera, fit it into the battery charger, and plug it into the wall socket. The draw back in doing this is you need to enter the time, date and other settings when you put the battery back in your camera. Having said that, the battery life is quite long, so you may not have to do this as often as you think.
Overall this is a good quality camera and should appeal to the casual user for taking snap shots and those who like to dabble in the more creative side of photography.
Excellent camera.......2005-11-10
I bought this camera after searching for hours for one that was suitable for me. I have no photography skills but when I see a beautiful sky set amongst the hills then I wanted to capture it on a good camera with quality prints - this is exactly what this camera does.
It is so easy to use, very user friendly, so much so that I didn't even have to read the intructions.
What is a must to buy with it however is a memory card as the memory without one only goes up to taking 24 pics.
The camera is also equipped with a video and sound setting which is fantastic.
No faults with this one I'm afraid - excellent camera.
