In My Opinion..........2008-01-08
Good bits (in no particular order) :
Most DSLR features like, P/A/S/M, metering modes, sequence shooting, bracketing etc.
One command dial for shutter and aperture, jogging through menus, browsing photos.
Panorama assist even makes new folders on the sd card for each sequence.
Good macro.
Option to set focus to infinity for landscapes etc.
Plenty of preset scene modes.(actually seem sensible and I suppose they could save you time some day).
Fast start time.
OK sequence mode on 12mp..3 shots only and slow. A faster card may be better.Does 3 shots with flash too.
Fast on 5mp and will run all day.
Plenty more resolution options too.16:9, 1:1.
Good ISO options .64 to 400 is good to ok. Can be set to auto but within a preset range.
Manual white balance option.
Respectable video with sound.640 by 480...1gb = 15 mins.
........
Bad bits:
A good flash coupled with an inability to focus in poor light and a focus assist light that might as well be laser pointer if your within 10 feet.
High ISO is for mono only. Haven't tried the 3200 iso yet.
If you want to split hairs:
The extension lenses are about 80 quid each.
Looks stupid on the tripod. :)
Looks ridiculous with my big Speedlight on it. :)
Listing all the good features and nice touches would take all day. The low light focus issue is the only real serious let down.
A well priced 12mp compact that is the next best thing to a DSLR, with good looks and good ergonomics.
It will fit in your pocket but a slim case will tip the balance and make it a bit too big. It will happily hang around your neck under a t-shirt or jumper all day long.
I don't think it's really aimed at the happy snapping party animal but if that's you, this isn't the camera you're looking for.
My personal views and opinions. Thanks for reading.
excellent compact!.......2008-01-02
this is an excellent camera considering it's size. Although it isnt as good as the Canon G9 it is considerably smaller than the G9 and fits easier in your pocket.
The reason I am making this review is for Mr auckland who stated in his review that he has had noise problems with his aswell as problems with being sold a non UK model. If your still experiencing problems and are looking to take it back, you should be able to get a full refund from where you bought it despite what they said about the percentage deducted from the refund. If they still give you problems site the 1979 Sale of Goods Act which states that setraders must sell goods of satisfactory quality. If you discover what you bought doesnt conform to that you can take it back and ask for a FULL refund or a new camera. This is a little known act and more people should look into it as it's especially useful if the one year warranty on your camera has run out as if the camera breaks after that you can argue that a camera should have a longer lifespan than that and still get a replacement/money back. I did this a couple of years ago with a fuji bridge camera I bought that broke down a few days after the end of the warranty. The important thing though is that this only pertains to the trader/retailer who sold you the item and not the manufacturer.
Hope this helps you Mr Auckland!
Noise but not the sort I was expecting.......2007-12-28
I have just bought the 5100. Did all the research and then spent half an hour in the shop struggling between the canon and the NIKON. In the end the Nikon won, it just feels and looks good and as I already own a D70 soon to become a D300 I liked the similarities in Design and function layout. It's my take everywhere camera and I'm sure it will be great for the job. I only have a few niggles and one is certainly NOT the cameras fault. I bought it on Tottenam Court Road from N-Genius. Great salesman and a fairly good deal, although it's now much cheaper on Amazon. Anyway when I got home and went to register the purchase to take advantage of the NIKON extended warranty I was told by NIKON that the serial number was not a UK one and that the camera was a foreign import. I took it back to N-Genius and was directed to their N-Genius Service department in a side street down some stairs and obviously set up so that customers in the N-Genius shop don't get to hear what rorts are afoot. Of course no joy there. They could offer me a credit note, but no guarantee they could exchange for a UK model and if they could there would be an additional charge. They could give me a refund less 25% then 15% on my unused 12 day old camera or I could go on my merry way. So I've kept the camera and only have one complaint. It is noisy, very noisy, not picture noise, but noise you can actually hear. It makes a constant whirring sound when switched on and this sound makes it's way onto the audio track of any movies you shoot. Now I would not use it as a primary video device but the ability to shoot short clips when no vid camera is at hand is certainly a selling point. Also the constant noise is almost certainly some sort of motor whirring and therefore a constant drain on the battery. I will be amazed if this is the case with all P5100s and will have to go to another store to see before returning to N-Genius to do battle with their unhelpful staff. Try it before you buy it is my advice and see if others are makeing the noise or if I got a dud.
Amazing little camera.......2007-11-14
There's a huge amount of controversy flying about the net over this camera the main gist of which is why (oh why!) do manufacturers cram more and more pixels into tiny sensors producing very noisy (grainy) images. The P5100 has come in for it's fair share of kicking over this and, to be fair, it does become noisy around 400 ISO and very noisy at higher film speed equivalents but, cast your mind back to the days of film, when did you ever use 800 ISO film!? The main point for me is that at lower iso settings and in most of 'Auto' mode this camera takes absolutely stunning images with real sympathy to colour and tone - unlike the overproduced and lurid results in the Canon equivalents. it's also very easy to hold and navigate and can make you feel like you're a good photographer in minutes. The manual is on the cd of software supplied (Nikon's lip service to the enviroment) but if you contact nikon europe, they can send a hard copy manual. Don't be fooled by the raging comparisons with the Canon G9, this is a different camera, i think better designed. It is slower than the Canons and you might want to choose them if you photo kids and/or sport but, for beautiful imagery this one gets the cigar. 5 stars not because it's 'The Best' but because it does what it does beautifully.
35mm SLR user seeks superb digital point and shoot with near SLR flexibility.........2007-11-02
I have struggled with the digital approach for many reasons but am very content with this compact feature packed treasure.
It's not perfect, -slow to capture in-between shots with an average battery life, but other than that it is a 5 star performer and given that in general terms it is photographic ability that a digi camera should be merited, 5 stars is what I have given. Especially when you consider the ability to tack on other lenses and a good quality video capture -- frankly 98% photographers will be more than amply served by this units functionality and feature set.
The remaining 2% will have to be spending hundreds maybe thousands to better the performance of this neat little monkey and sporting handbags with hunchbacks...
For ref there are many sites that compare this camera to the Canon G9, some favourably, most not. I did a sig amount of research of others' opinions (no professional review as yet) and felt that on mass this camera was the overall best buy. Having taken the plunge I have no regrets, but will reiterate -do not buy this if you are a sports photographer as the time between shots would be prohibitive.

Great buy!!!! Very happy customer!.......2007-12-07
I would say I'm more of a consumer than a prosumer, so maybe my eyes are untrained. However, I have owned various cameras in the past which cost similar money and I have to say this one is by far the best by far! Fantastic pictures are produced! And as an added bonus it comes with a Sandisk 2GB SD card, for a great all round price. Very happy indeed!
