It's really great!.......2008-01-15

I did all the trawling through forums and reviews before purchasing this camera too. I used to own an older G Series camera, and whilst you don't get the fold out screen anymore, you do get a HUGE screen. Whilst you don't get the remote control, you do get more timer options than you can shake a stick at. Whilst you don't get the fast lens, you do get a good optical zoom and an optical stabiliser in a very solid tidy little unit. As a family man I had to make a decision between a small camera that i could take "everywhere" with me or a bigger camera that i might get tired of lugging around. I made the right decision, this is a great camera. There are loads of USEFUL manual settings, or a simple Auto mode that does everything for you. After seeing mine, several people that were in the market for a digital camera bought the same model. Highly reccomended.

Useles histogram.......2008-01-11

The hisotgram, that some reviewers praise, is utterly useles. It is a histogram of the green channel only, not of the average luminance (or even better Iuv luminance) as you would expect if it were to have any value for exposure. This means that if you take a lot of photos in the flesh-tone range, like nudes or portraits (as I do), the pictures will get overexposed and the highlights blown -if you trust the histogram. It took my a while to figure this out so I hope this review will be of help to others. Apart from that the camera is awesome, so I give it 5 stars.

MARVELOUSLY BRILLIANT.......2008-01-06

Just got mine two days ago and play with it constantly. I am now a geek. the guy who doesn't think this camera needs a tripod as he can't shoot without pressiong the shutter.....just use the timer!! Amazed by the limited photo's I've taken so far. Time lapse is good fun. Bought this camera as I spend a lot of time outdoors and it is tough, takes really good panning shots (mountain biking) and gives me all the control of and SLR in a camera I can throw in my rucksack. Nice one Canon. PS: don't buy from EGEARS...mine came from USA with terrible adaptor and worries over warranty. Should have bough from Amazon and taken the £30 hit for a PROVEN WARRANTY.

Why Has It Got A Tripod Bush??.......2008-01-04

I cannot knock the quality of either this camera, or indeed the photos it produces, however, for me it has one really bad fault, there is no way of firing the shutter without pressing the shutter button, great for those candid shots, but sadly, as an amateur of many years standing, I still find the need to use a tripod sometimes, and I don't always feel the need to carry the EOS 300D plus lenses around, what a shame, I have to say that had I been aware of this failing prior to purchase I would have definitely looked around a little more!! I have emailed Canon, and they confirm that none of their current compact digital cameras have any sort of remote working, so why the tripod bush then, seems rather poiontless to me!! I wonder if this is the future of compact digital cameras generally, I hope not for the sake of the photographers of the future, they need all the encouragement they can get to get technical!!

Lived up to expectations.......2008-01-02

I purchased this camera on the advice of my stepson (a professional photographer)and to date, have not regretted it one bit! The G9 has done everything I expected it to do and so much more in fact! It looks good and feels good too, and heaps better than the Nikon Coolpix S1 I owned previously. I still own a Pentax SLR with all the lenses and flash guns etc, but this is pre digital and oh so bulky compared to the new stuff nowadays. The G9 has now given me the control of my photography I used to have with the SLR once again , however it is quite compact and therefore a delight to take with me almost anywhere.I am truly delighted with it and would suggest it as a suitable purchase for the amateur who wants more out of his or her photographs, as well as professionals who will find it a useful spare, to keep handy for the moments when they dont have time to set up all their equipment!
