The Sony DSC-P1 digital camera epitomises everything that you would associate with Sony products; a combination of style, build quality, technical proficiency and desirable features. The compact chassis, in its two-tone silver and blue finish, looks attractive and has a good feel to it--substantial without being overly weighty. It sits comfortably in your hand and the controls are all logically laid out, with a sensible menu structure implemented on the LCD viewfinder.
The camera has a 3.3 Megapixel CCD, capable of producing images at 2048x1536--suitable for high quality prints and enlargements. This is complemented by a Sony 3x optical zoom lens, with 2x digital zoom on top of this. The image quality is excellent at the highest resolution, with images either saved as compressed JPEGs, or TIFFs. The images are saved onto removable Memory Sticks, with an 8 MB stick supplied. At the highest resolution this doesn't provide room for many images--approximately 5 JPEGs, or a single TIFF. You can improve this storage space by either purchasing separately available Memory Sticks, or setting a lower resolution for the images you are taking. There are various settings available right down to 640x480(VGA), of which you can fit 118 images onto the 8MB card. The DSC-P1 also has a Movie mode, which lets you capture short MPEG movies, with audio. These are limited to 15 second clips in all but the lowest quality setting, at which point it goes up to 60 seconds. This is a nice addition, though no substitute for a camcorder, if making home movies is important to you.
The DSC-P1 is designed to be a simple point and shoot replacement camera that is easy to use, but takes high quality images. This said, it does have several more advanced features up its sleeve, if you are prepared to delve into the settings menus. Various flash settings, spot light metering, plus several AE modes and white balance controls, all help to make available some sophisticated photography techniques. Enough to make this an enthusiasts camera, rather than for a professional. Another nice touch is the inclusion of an InfoLithium rechargeable battery. This "smart" battery can measure the current temperature, and the current power drain to give you updated estimates on the remaining battery life. This is incredibly useful, and the battery has a good life span anyway.
Synchronising images with your PC is straightforward. A USB driver is supplied, which effectively treats the device like a removable drive and any images are accessible from the stored folders on the Memory Stick. The naming convention of these folders is pre-determined and while it's designed to make sense across the Sony Memory Stick platform of products, it's not entirely intuitive at first. Editing software comes in the form of MGI PhotoSuite V8.1 for Windows and MGI PhotoSuite SE V1.1 for Macintosh users. MGI VideoWave SE+ is also provided, but for Windows only.

I bought the Sony DCP1 in 2001 and didn't need a new battery until 2003, and that's taking multitudes of pictures on high resolutions. I have since bought a new battery, in fact my husband has bought the same camera too. Maybe there were some faulty ones out of a batch and you lot got them. It does happen! I'm happy to say I love this camera and wouldn't swap it for anything. It goes everywhere with me.

You would be very wise to heed the warnings concerning battery malfunction. I have had this camera for 2 or 3 years and basically it's now useless as it refuses to charge batteries. This seems to be a known problem amongst owners of this camera, and whilst I agree that the other features of the camera are excellent indeed, what's the point if you cannot use it for more than 2 photos at a time.
Very, very disappointed, and expected much better from Sony.

Got this camera when didnt really know about them, recommened by shop assistant as you are, and then at a hefty price- way he demonstrated it, looks like an amazing little piece of gagetry, and it is:
Simple, clear, useful menus, large LCD display, no unnecessary buttons, nice design, not overly heavy, and takes great pictures...
That is until youve used it for the first time for longer than the 3 mins in the shop and when youre about to take your 5th photo with it ever of that unforgettable...[insert exotic landmark] in [insert tropical country]...the little picture of a crossed out battery starts flashing on your screen and the battery is dead, although five minutes ago that 'clever' little dispay read that you had 132 mins of battery life left and you felt secure and happy.
Buy this camera if you want to carry round 10 spare batteries, only take photos within one metre of the mains plug, or just prefer living life on the edge and taking 0.10 sec shots...otherwise, i wouldnt

I have owned the DSC P1 for nearly two years, and while it is an excellent camera in terms of its functionality, and ease of use, the battery technology is dreadful. After a few mnonths of use the batteries refuse to charge, which means that you can only fire off a quick shot before the camera shuts down. A quick search on the internet will confirm that many users across the world have had this problem, and while Sony (Europe) know about it they are not prepared to do anything. My camera was sent to the manufacturer, and came back with a note saying that there was nothing wrong with it. After 5 new batteries from differing manufacturers (obv. including the v. expensive Sony one), I am now going to buy a camera from a reputable camera manufacturer such as Canon, or Minolta. Sony may be good at TVs and home entertainment, but avoid their cameras.

I've just recieved this camera and it's fantastic. the range of features on the camera are just endless. I've updated to Digital photography from my old 35mm camera. What a change, better quality, stylish and much easier to use. No more time wasted trying to fit the film into the slot and winding the camera up etc.
The LCD viewfinder is great. Because I have glasses, I find it hard to look through the hole and kept scrathing my glasses on the camera but now with the screen, I don't have to worry about it! However, the LCD screen does use up a lot of battery power and i do find that I'm chargin my battery all the time. Buying an extra battery is useful and it can sometimes be a bit of a lifesaver!
The camera, even though it's packed with features, is extremly user-friendly with helpful on-screen insturctions. The navigation around the features is made possible with a 4 way button.(ie. up, down, left and right!)
The first thing that striked me was the size. It is very compact. Although bulky and slightly heavy, it is still well designed but maybe the ergonomics of the camera were slightly less prioritised.
the fact that you simply record photos on a memory stick means that I don't have to go and buy lots of film and just memory sticks but only when I need te use of an extra one or two!
The last thing I must comment on is the Movie mode. It's very useful but can only record 15 seconds in one go which is useless although if you wanted to record more than maybe you should have bought a digital camcorder!(Must put that on my wish list!)
Overall this is a compact, useful, user-friendly, stylish and high-tech piece of kit. It's a bargain price. Go and get yours NOW!!!
