This camera was given to me as a Xmas present last year.It is a solid robust camera and relatively easy to use as I am a techno idiot.I have stuck a 1gb memory card in it and it takes pretty good video.It is easy to put the photos onto your pc with the software provided.When on holiday I would struggle to take a dozen or so pictures, on the last one I took 70 then put them on a cd which you can view on your tv via your dvd.Now you can really bore the pants off of your friends with your holiday snaps.

I rang this retailer up about this product and the staff were very un professional and also hung up on me as they were unable to answer my comments i would recommend NOT to buy any products from this supplier as if this is the way they treat customers before they buy god help us if we paid out money then this behaviour occurs.

Sony DSC-W5- Excellent picture quality........2006-03-18
This camera is excellent. Its 2.5" lcd is unbeatable. Operational modes allow use by anyone. You can just switch on and shoot
or
Switch on select on of the pre-sets and shoot
or switch on , make changes to aperture size, shutter speed etc and shoot.
The 32 MB internal memory gave me 50 photographs at 1MP(enough for a post-card size print). Although you could take about 16 photos in 5.1MP (A3 size, I don't think if you'll ever print it)
Its really nice, when you come home from a trip and just connect your camera to the TV and watch your photos/video.
Then there are those advanced functions like Metering Mode for exposure correction, Single/Multiple Auto focusing ensures that you have a perfect picture most of the time.
Now for the other side of it:
The only missing feature I can think of if is that although the camera does indicate if it is viable to vibration(A shaky hand appears on the screen), it does NOT have a vibration/shake correction feature. With so much control over the shutter speed, I'd expect that at slower speeds. Although a mini tripod should not be a bad investment
Although the camera can be used, as soon as it is popped out off the box, I'd recommend you to buy atleast 128MB memory card and a decent Camera case along with the Camera.
Verdict:
I love it, great value for money.I'd recommend this to anyone who would be interested to transition from causual photography to someone who wants a l'll more control over exposure/focus.
And dont forget, Its a Sony!

A great camera with manual options.......2006-01-24
I bought this as a "notebook" compact to carry in the pocket rather than dragging out an SLR for every shot. As a pro photographer with habits, I wanted a camera with an viewfinder, not being keen on composing on an LCD screen, but I have to say, this camera has changed my mind with its crisp, responsive and bright large size LCD.
Camera response times on startup and pressing the shutter are also excellent for this price point. A range of auto modes largely cope well with varied lighting conditions, and so far exposure accuracy seems good, albeit with a tendency to overexpose with flash.
The major reason for choosing this camera over others was the manual exposure options, allowing override of shutter, aperture, white balance and ISO - ideal for forcing slow shutter times and for awkward lighting when auto just doesn't cut it. Image quality is generally very good, the Zeiss lens producing crisp images with good, balanced tones, although it is a little prone to blowing out detail close to bright highlights.
The camera body is well constructed and large enough to hold steady with comfort. Overall, I'd have no hestitation in recommending this camera at the price.
Problems shooting in lowlight.......2006-01-23
Perfect except sometimes I run into problems taking photos at night.
While it can take beautiful atmospheric shots in the dark(see birthday candle mode) it looks like this setting will only work when there is a concentrated point of bright light in an absolutely dark room, but for taking photos outside at night, it's a bit iffy. I've had to content myself with using flash which gives an overly bright light.
