Product Description

The Kodak EasyShare Z812 IS Zoom digital camera is closely related to the existing Z712 IS model, and couples eight megapixel resolution with an optically stabilized 12x zoom lens, 2.5" LCD display, and electronic viewfinder. Other features include high ISO sensitivity to a maximum of 3200 equivalent, plus face detection, smart scene mode, aperture / shutter priority and full manual shooting, and a high-res video mode with 30 frames per second shooting. As compared to the original Z712, the Kodak Z812 IS has slightly higher resolution, a slightly extended low sensitivity limit of ISO 64 instead of ISO 80, now allows ISO 3200 to be used at up to 2.2 megapixel resolution instead of 1.2 megapixel, and has one extra resolution setting each for videos and still images. This camera was bought because it had a view finder ostensibly. My Pansonic lumix (a great little piece of kit!) drives my mad in strong sunlight so I thought I'll try Kodak. Usually I would keep to the big 4 Canon.Pentax,Nikon,Olympus. My thinking was on the lines of....They have been making cameras for a very long time and they have just got to have 'something'. Well, I am gobsmacked by the specification of the
Z812-IS. It is virtually an SLR with through the lens electronic viewfinder with full viewfinder readout too. OK, the build is a bit plasticky but it has a nice (somewhat cramped) rubberised grip, very easy controls, and a popup flash.
Full manual control,tele/wide button,close up/macro, landscape,and manual separate buttons for convenience just behind the exposure release.
You have the Mode dial which allows manual,program,aperture priority,shutter priority,view favorites,video,scene,people in low light, panarama. All these modes are in addition to the 3 buttons aformentioned which are behind the shutter release. Then you have the Menu button which allows various setups ...like Capture the most common picture-taking settings,Capture -plus, for other picture taking settings, Video for setting video settings, and setup for other set-ups. There are umpteen flash modes,Flash compensation, red-eye.
INCLUDING thumbnails,multiple view. White balance and iso sttings.
The camera will automatically set the controls to the scene you are taking and the selection of various settings is amazing. snow,fireworks,children,closeup documents,beach,full frame,motion,distant scenery,scenery at night,flowers in bright sun,sunset,sun behind subject,candle light,self portrait,documents,action for children in bright sunlight.
So there you have it. This camera has a very good sensor and the pictures achieved are as good as anything I have seen. The price is amazing, the camera has an SLR specification and also has a SCHNEIDER 36MMM-432MM EQUIVALENT to 12xzoom AF. The lens has very quick focusing and you will not be disappointed by buying this amazing camera.
Ther are one or two grumbles though. The battery that came with it is not rechargable which means you have to buy a rechargable battery. You do not get a battery charger either so this means an extra purchase. The strap is very awkward to fit because I have got big fingers. Once fitted though its a good strong and stylish strap. There is not enough gap between the grip and the inside of the camera which means your fingers seem to be cramped, You do not get an SD card either and the internal memory only allows you to take around 12 photos(A MINOR NIGGLE)
All in all though this camera is all but in name an SLR without the expense and if I were you I would go and get one before everyone else hears that the secret is out. AMAZING PIECE OF KIT FOR THE MONEY and incidently it was designed in Japan and manufactured in China for Eastman Kodak.
JUST TO MENTION, IT HAS A JOG DIAL WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO MAKE ADJUSMENTS TO EXPOSURE,ISO,FLASH ETC.
