very nice looking.......2006-12-25
I got this camera after buying a samsung which was total rubbish, cheap and nasty and then broke after 3 days and on returning it decided on the Pentax instead as I wanted a camera with an SD card and they only had a few to choose from.
I've had it for a few months now, It's not as good as my previous Canon ixus i but is growing on me.
It looks very pretty, is a nice size and extremely well made and robust, my 3 year old has dropped it a few times and it's survived well.
Don't even bother with alkaline batteries as it's a waste of money but the rechargeable ones I use will take around 60 or even more pics, all with the flash.
It can be fairly simple to use as my 3 year old seems to manage to take reasonable pics, my 13 year old takes very good pics.
The shutter delay is around one second which is a bit of a pain but once you are used to it you can press the shutter release half way to focus and then the fully to take the pic and this results in less than half a second delay. The beauty of a digital is you can take loads of pics and delete the ones you don't like.
Video is okay but I haven't yet found a way of adjusting the sound volume.
It seems to have loads of things you can do with it if you can be bothered to read the manual, different colour filters, very close macro, museum setting (no flash and better in low light) to name just a few of the many. I used to own a pentax ME super many years ago and this seems to do a whole lot more but you need to be a bit of a camera enthusiast to get the most of it.
The zoom is good, even the digital zoom seems to be pretty usable and the pictures come out well.
The supplied software is okay but not as easy to use as the canon.
In conclusion, it's a nice well made camera which as I'm getting to find out what it can do is starting to grow on me. It's far superior to the Samsug. After a few more months I may get to prefer it to the Canon ixus i but at the moment this one just scrapes 4 stars whilst the canon gets an easy 5.

Regarding recent comments by a few users, I have carried out some tests regarding current drain :-

If flash is used, the initial current at switch-on peaks to 1amp briefly then settles to the steady state value.
Using a lithium CR-V3 battery or a pair of Ni-MH 2500mA-hr cells, the camera performs very well.In fact the operating manual advises against using other types of cells.Strangely, the new camera had two unsuitable manganese cells included in the box!A much better first impression could have been achieved using a CR-V3 battery....Pentax take note!!
Doesn't cut.......2006-01-20
This is my second Pentax Optio, the earlier one being the S330 (bought in late 2002). The older camera had slow shutter timing and poor results with low-light conditions but I was generally happy with what I got for the price. As I was toying with my Xmas present this year, it became obvious that Pentax didn't do much to improve those issues over the three years. Having said that, the 6.0 megapixels provide impressive results if the light is good and some features, such as the super-macro, function quite well. I can't agree with the comments about battery life: I use rechargeable NiMH batteries (1700 mAh) and manage to get more than a hundred shots and some videos before recharging again. Overall, I wouldn't say that the S60 should be avoided but I'd probably think twice if it was for me to buy.
Optio 60 - nice camera, shame about the battery drain.......2006-01-06
A nice little compact camera with good control of shutter and aperture settings - things you'd expect on a superzoom or SLR camera. A decent picture even in Auto point and click mode, with few problems due to picture compression.
The big problem is this camera gobbles AA batteries like a dog eats it's dinner. I'm lucky if I got 10 shots in (variable conditions) before the battery indicator showed the batteries were running low. With 2000 maH rechargables, I got about 30 to 40 shots before the same happened.
If this is compared with some of the Fuji cameras, with the latter (A204 and A350 compacts; S5600 and S7000 superzoom cameras), I managed to get through a day or more before the battery indicator said charge was low and I knew I had enough time to get a few more shots off before having to change.
Nice camera, but battery charge loss makes this camera only of limited use after a relatively short period of time. Pentax has let itself down. Avoid.

I purchased this camera because it was a good deal with a case and 512mb of memory card bundled in. From the outset I was a bit miffed that you couldn't turn off the LCD screen permanently (although you can turn it off every time you turn on). I knew this would mean a drain on the battery. What I wasn't expecting was how short the battery life would be. About half a day (15 photos) and the batteries were dead. I replaced these batteries for cheap AA ones that wouldn't even work. I knew that AA batteries wouldn’t be as good as the expensive long life ones….but I was expecting at least a days pictures from them!
Also a disappointment was the huge lag in shutter time. I specifically wanted the camera to take pictures of my two young children. Every time I tried to take their picture they had moved out of shot by the time the shutter clicked. As well as this all the pictures I took were extremely blurry. I can only assume that this is because the camera was focusing on the subject and then the subject would move before the shutter went. Thus the subject was out of focus.
I would avoid this camera....the Pentax name does not give you a reassurance of quality and I am just glad that I could get a refund from the store were I bought it !!!!

Poor camera from Pentax.......2006-01-11
The Pentax Optio 60 has some serious problems. The camera will not lock focus at low light levels (living room level) making it almost impossible to take good photographs indoors, even with flash. The camera eats batteries, re-chargeable is not the solution. There are much better cameras available at lower price - look elsewhere.
Brilliant Photos, Shame about the batteries........2005-12-27
The Pentax Optio 60 give truely brilliant photographs - the richness and depth of the colours really do come out when taking pictures in the out doors.
When printing the pictures - they print up to A3 comfortably and the quality remains.
The camera has a good clear and bright screen - and is realatively easy to use for a novice - and has some more advanced settings for the experienced user.
However there is a major flaw in this camera and it lies with the batteries. During the day whilst your out and about taking picutres in the sunshine and daylight - without the flash - the battery will comfortably last for a good three days use.
However be warned - if you indend to take this camera on a night out - or to be used in dark indoors - then have a good supply of AA ready.
Its basically down to the flash that uses up the power - it is a very strong flash - that may give an explaination.
Overall the camera is very sturdy and is of a quality built - with a metal finish all over - that you don't find on many of the other 'plasticy' finished cameras on the market.
I was dissapointed by the issues with the flash - but as i have said - if you are looking for a good camera for throughout the day use - and possibly a small amount of evening use - then this camera would be perfect.
The quality of the picutures, for the price of the camera are definately the selling point!
