Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sony Delivers on promise.......2007-12-07

I have had the T30 now since Christmas last year and it is still an excellent compact camera. I bought this as my last camera was a Sony Cybershot which has lasted years and I felt very comfortable with it's setup.

The T30 is what I would call a top of the range compact camera, in that it's not like an SLR - it's very easy to use, has lots of automatic and manual settings to choose from and is ideal for a point and shoot photographer. It's digital zoom is ok but if you really want powerful zoom look elsewhere, as I said this is a compact camera. The quality of these 7.2mp photos is excellent and you can change the quality or size of the photo to pretty much whatever you want. Want pictures just for posting on the net? Select lowest setting and away you go, also obviously increasing the number of pictures you'll fit on your memory stick. Also from opening the camera to taking a picture takes about a second, no waiting around for it all to power up.

The 3" screen is a joy on this camera! After using it for a couple of months I went back and had a look at my old camera and couldn't believe the difference. Screen is easily kept clean with the cloth provided. The next model up from the T30 (T45? 50?) has a touch screen instead of the traditional buttons down the right side of the back. I was actually given the newer version by accident, which I had a fiddle with at home but didn't like. The screen very quickly became messy with fingerprints and the interfacing just didn't seem as natural. Save money and stick with this superior model.

Filming with the camera is also wonderful. As long as you have enough memory (ie large enough memory card) the playback quality on high setting is just fantastic and has actually stopped me from buying a digital camcorder! It's obviously not as good as a camcorder but the quality is great for filming holiday's and days out and plays back wonderfully on a pc.

The only negative I have about the T30 is that it's flash is a little too bright and can (slightly) bleach some of the colour out of a picture, particularly if the subject is less than 3 or 4 metres away. But this is only a minor niggle on the road to perfection and the low light settings more than make up for it.

All in all this is wonderful little camera (credit card-ish but about an inch and a half wide) and I can't recommend it highly enough. I bought mine a year ago now and I see that the price has come down by nearly £70 - excellent value for money! After use in Afghanistan, in boats, on planes, hot and cold climates I can say if you're looking for a reliable easy to use digital camera and want good results, you won't go wrong here.

4 out of 5 stars All most perfect.......2007-04-23

This is an excellent camera, the picture quality is superb.
It has some smart technology (anti camera shake), at times too smart - interface has been dumbed down (great, as it improves your daily shots), but it's hard to manually adjust the settings (e.g. for night shots).
I've had this for 9 months, and overall is an excellent camera.

- it has now been super-seeded by later models (T10/T50).

Minor faults:
- Ever so slightly too thick to carry in your pocket with ease.
- 3x zoom is not enough to be useful (get the same results by moving - if you can).
- Minimal manual features (would be nice to have macro, or manually change other features).

5 out of 5 stars how things should be.......2006-10-01

why cant everything be this easy?

This is the Ipod of cameras. Its sexy and stylish and takes brilliant shots. Its well designed and easy to use and fits in your pocket. Its a dream to use. Its no bigger than a deck of cards but nothing is awkard or fussy and the battery lasts forever. I love good design and this is good design. Go on, give in and buy one.

5 out of 5 stars Pick the DSC T30 over all other Sony compacts!.......2006-09-24

Like my title says,Pick above all other Sony compacts! I previously owned a DSC N1 and the screen locked up,had a replacement to find the same problem, so bought the model under the DSC N1 which is the DSC T30.The 8mb DSC N1 pictures and the 7.2mb pictures on the DSC T30 appear no differnt in quality either. These are my observations over and above the DSC N1 - Most cases DSC T30 cheaper to buy, includes steadyshot, Info battery(time left until re-charge), can zoom in and out during movie mode, no touch screen gimmickery to go wrong! I recommend this camera as the best Sony compact so far, but make sure you spend a few pounds buying a 'clear screen' protector. Well worth it to save scratching your 3"LCD screen. Enjoy !

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-06-02

Having had a Sony digital camera before, which was a little disappointing because it had a miniscule screen, I have been very satisfied with this great camera, for a few reasons:
1. The screen is massive and means you can get a better idea of what you're taking a photo of.
2. It fits into almost any handbag with ease!
3. It's really easy to point and shoot - all you have to do is slide the cover down and shoot away!
4. Its rather tough - I've dropped mine a few times (on hard floors) and it still works, with no visible signs of damage! - It's perfect for butterfingered people.
Overall it is a really good camera and I carry mine everywhere with me because it's so light and small. I would suggest to anyone buying this camera to get a 4GB memory card because once you start taking photos you won't be able to stop and even though 2GB is probably enough (that's the one I have) 4GB would give you even more ease of mind - knowing you won't miss out on a photo!

4 out of 5 stars Good but just not as sharp as the cannon ixus 900.......2007-04-17

Excellent camera, the screen is fantastic and the touch screen feature is a bonus! However the pictures just don't have the level of sharpness the cannon can offer which can get very frustrating indeed. Overall a great camera however i have always used cannons and seem to get better results.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!!.......2007-04-02

My Sony Cyber-shot T50 arrived last week (on time - thank you Amazon), and I was ecstatic. Here are the reasons I would recommend the T50:

1. LCD
- I confess, one of the main reasons I bought this camera was because of the 3" screen. I wanted a camera that had a 3" screen minimum, so the T50 was a prime choice. The screen is ample size, and the quality and precision is pefect. I was really apprehensive about the touchscreen being unreponsive, or difficult to use (especially because I have quite stubby fingers). However this was not an issue: the screen is sensitive enough so it reacts well, and stubby figures are no problem.
Screen Rating - 5 stars

2. Picture Quality
- Nowadays, you can purchase 10 megapixel cameras for under £200. It did cross my mind that perhaps 7 megapixels wouldn't be enough, but the quality is excellent. The pictures in fact are so high in quality that the size of them are 2 MB (which is actually slightly annoying - because sometimes I have to resize them to share, which is a bit of a pain.) Other from that, the quality is flawless. Fantastic! I haven't tried the ISO features (because I don't know how) - I'm not really a proper photographer, I just enjoy taking simple pictures (when I go out, on holiday, etc.) The T50 works for this perfectly.
Quality Rating - 5 stars

3. Size
- The T50 is the perfect size - not too big - it can fit in your pocket, but not too small - so it's not fiddly to use. I thought it'd be quite thick as well, but it's not an issue. The size is excellent - it COULD be smaller, but hey - with all the features installed on this, it's not a problem.
Size Rating - 5 stars

4. Attractiveness of Camera
- The camera is very attractive. I personally prefer it in black, but when I bought it the black wasn't on sale so I settled for silver. Silver is still nice, it's stylish and a camera like this will never go out of fashion. The sliding lens cover protects the lens, works as an on/off button and looks good.
Attractiveness Rating - 5 stars

Overall - this camera deserves 5 STARS because it excels in every area.
I really like this device and I'm confident it won't give me any problems (I hope I haven't jinxed it!)
My ONLY criticism is the lack of case - you want a case to protect the screen. Sony don't supply one with the camera, which I feel is a bit of a let-down, but hey. I purchased a leather case from Amazon, which fits snugly and looks good too.

I hope this review has convinced you to buy the T50, as I feel it is a camera well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Top of the range compact.......2007-01-22

Having had an Olympus MJU-300 for 4 years, I was looking to replace it with a top of the range compact camera that was lightweight yet had all the features I wanted. There is a lot of choice with Sony, Olympus, Canon and Casio all making stunning and full featured compacts that have been getting good reviews. I decided on the Sony purely on reputation and comments I read about previous models in the T range. The listed price on the Sony website is £350, so when I saw it going for £215 on Amazon and being the top-of-the-range in the T series, I decided to place my order.

The first thing you notice is the weight which at 130g (without the battery) its lighter than some mobile phones! This camera looks amazing, it is truely the Ferrari of compacts. Secondly, the screen is one of the biggest and best I have seen on a compact and it is also a touch screen which means a lot less clutter on the back of the camera with only 2 buttons. Before buying this camera I was sceptical whether the touch screen would be as effective as having proper buttons but I can say after using if for a week that it performs very responsively and its extremely intuative. The slideshow feature is another great feature and you can upload your own MP3s to play alongside the pictures.

Picture quality is also very good thanks to the Carl Zeiss lens which is the same one as featured in the W range but is hidden away when the lens cover is closed. Outdoor daylight shots were very sharp and the marco mode worked really well for close ups. I take a lot of pictures in clubs where light is minimal so I decided to try it out. The flash worked really well keeping the subject in focus while still keeping the surrounding details and clarity.

The movie mode is also great but you can only capture about 15mins on a 1Gb card at the highest resolution (640 x 480 fine). The quality was very good when output on an LCD TV using the supplied video out cable.

Now for the negatives. Well you should invest in a good quality leather case as scrathes would not be welcome on something that looks this good.
Also the touch screen does attract finger prints quite easily so should be cleaned often. Otherwise this camera in a must have!

Here are my scores out of 10:

Looks: 10
Image Quality: 9
Movies: 8
Battery Life: 9
Overall: 9

5 out of 5 stars A super little camera.......2007-01-11

I ordered this camera from Amazon just before Christmas. I resisted from using it straight away as I put the battery in the charger provided for 24 hours, I was always told to do this with new re-chargable batteries to make the battery work better and last longer.

When I finally got to play with it I realised what a super choice of camera I had made, it's a real plug and play camera. The HUGE 3 inch screen is great (and everyone is always very impressed, and to be honest always think it's more expensive than it actually is with such a good price on Amazon).

It takes memory stick DUO, not the traditional memory stick, so when you buy (min 1GB if I was you) remember to buy the DUO type!! Expensive compared to SD, but I found really cheap ones from digital perspective (i think)and got a sony high speed (worth the extra and amazingly fast) 1 GB for £17ish. Less than a second between taking one photo can you take the next, well I personally think this is fast anyway.

The camera is slim for a digital camera, 1.5 - 2 cms I'd say and the size of the screen is brilliant (the two main factors for me purchasing this camera), and very useful when viewing the pics - it even has fancy modes you can choose for seeing pics too in slideshow mode with a choice of music, choice of effects, changable volume and there's also a 'paint' mode where you can write on the pics (with plastic pointer included) in different colours, and add pre-set images such as stars, tear drops, hearts, cat paws, music notes in different colours to the pics. You can then choose to save the painted on pic to memory and it'll be saved beside the other pic (not instead of which one person thought would happen).

My mother had never used a digital camera before she used this one. She found it a bit hard that there was no view-finder at the beginning but soon got used to the screen. She also didn't like it that the screen was constantly moving at first, as with all digital camera screens, but again soon got used to it. By the end of the week she was taking my camera and enjoying taking photos (this sounds like a bizzare thing to say but we are a family who normally hate having photos taken and taking them, but now we are getting used to it thanks to this camera, the joy of deleting rough pictures makes all more open to having photos taken and the small size means it's totally handbag-able).

The anti-shake thing is good, I haven't had any 'shakey' photos in the month I have had it and taking moving pics is better than you will have ever had before with really no blurring, it's so clever.
I have had a few disappointing pics, ones that have been blurry but this was the fault of the person taking the pic. On the camera you push the button down half way and then a green light comes oo indicating it's focused and to press the rest of the way down to take the photo, my father pushed the button the whole way down in one swift movement and a blurry pic was the result of this. The half-way pushing of the button only takes less than a sec to focus.

On flash mode, there's an orange light indicating to the person IN the photo when it'll be taken, and on the timer mode the flashing of the orange light increaces as the timer goes down and when it stops you know the pic is going to be taken. 2 or 10 sec timer (2 secs is too short, but the 10 gives enough time for the person taking it to get in the pic and settle down).

What else, the movie mode makes the pics lighter than in the photo mode, but is great quality still.

Red eyes was a problem for me even with the red-eye reduction on, but just edited them on photo editing software, I think it's because I have very blue eyes.

Oh, the touch panel on the screen. Suitable for fat and skinny fingers it's easy as pie to work, only thing is it gets a bit greasy, I'm going to buy a protector for it, one of the silicone ones that you add to stop scratches (it's not scratched, but would be upset if it did get damaged) for peace of mind and would make it easy to wipe clean.

It does not come with a case, stupidly, so buy one, you don't want this camera to get ruined.

The battery is super - 270 pics and still had battery left, but the charger isn't huge so you cn bring it with you on hols.

Great quality pics so long as you take them properly; clear, crisp, good colours, flash easilty turned on and off, auto-focus brill...

I would recommend this camera to anyone, the touchscreen is a really special feature and this camera has the wow factor in all of my friends opinions, and definately in mine.

SUPER CAMERA!!!

Hope this helps,

Helen x

5 out of 5 stars Sony Cybershot DSC-T30.......2007-05-15

Wow, that's all I can say to sum up this amazing piece of technology. I have read some review disparaging the Cybershot but I can't follow their arguments, I have to assume they are talking about a completely different camera. First of let's speak about the camera body, metal in a glossy black which oozes sex appeal. The only downside is it attracts fingerprints like a mirror. You will be taking the polishing cloth to this on a regular basis. The camera is extremely small but feels solid and sturdy in the hand. It is turned on either by sliding down the integrated lens cover or by pressing the power button on top.

The LCD is 3 inches and is incredibly bright, detailed and easy to see even in sunlight. You will not be missing the lack of optical viewfinder, the LCD screen gives a good representation of the finished photograph. Again it attracts the fingerprints and is probably the cameras weak point in the strength/sturdiness department so a screen protector would be a sensible investment.

The camera is simplicity itself to work, there are no modes that allow you direct control over shutter spped / f stop settings but you can use the presets to fudge the camera into doing what you want. I find this offers the best of both worlds, novices will use the presets to help out with tricky exposure situations whilst the more experienced users will be able to use the program mode to nudge +/- ev and the like to produce a usable image.

There are a few standout features on this camera that raise it head and shoulders above the competition. First off is the macro function which allows focus down to one centimetre, it is simply incredible and opens a whole new world of photography. Second is the optical stabilizer which assists with low light/ no flash photography. To say it helps is an understatement. I took a photo at a ferry terminal in the dead of night with the camera leaning on the door of my van (still being held by me to stop if from falling) and with a combination of countdown timer and the optical stabiliser the two second was pin sharp. I have not seen such sharp images taken at night on any of my previous digital cameras. The last feature I really like is the burst mode. This records a constant stream of 16 images and when you press the shutter is saves the eight prior to you pressing the button and the eight after. When viewed back the images are displayed sequentially and are great for analysing golf swings etc but I have had a lot of fun capturing splashes, ripples etc.

As mentioned in previous reviews battery life is generous. Throw in a 2gb memory pro duo card and you have enough capacity to easily last a one or two week hoilday.

I have absolutely no hesitation in awarding this camera five starts, the images are of good quality, the internal optical zoom minimizes the form factor, it looks classy and works really well in low light. There are now camera in the sub-compact category that have 8 or more megapixels but this is not to be taken as a benchmark of a better camera. The lens elements in these cameras are so small that the 7 or 8 mp mark CCD's are about the max that can capture images with such small lenses. Anything bigger the CCD size increaes and the form factor goes up.

This camera fits neatly into a pocket, fires up in 1.3 secs and has a quick processing time for more shots.

I really can't reccommend this camera enough, if you are looking at the sub-compact category please go for this, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Sony DSC-T30 Review.......2006-09-30

In the box i received:

The camera unit, battery, charger, wrist strap, software and drivers disk, USB/TV Cables, instructions in both Japanese & English.

The unit itself is very thin, but not quiet as thin as the T-7. The unit features a 7.1mp Carl Zeiss lense which in my opinon is amazing. The colour are alot more vivid compared to other 7mp camera in this price range.

The camera is just the right size to put in your pocket easily, whilst still knowing its there so you dont sit on it!

As with 99% of Sony Products the 3.0" LCD Screen is superb. Bright enough to see outside in sun light, and almost as nice as a Bravia TV (emphasis on almost!)

The battery life is huge offering around 420 shots at 7.1mp images, on a fine setting with no flash.

Some people may think that a negative side to the T30 is that there is no view finder, meaning battery life is going to be short. In my experience the battery has survied long enough for 400 shots! Easily enough for most photographers.

The software is simple and efficient to you, as is the camera.

Another nice feature is that when you review the images you have taken you can choose to play to a music track you can upload to the camera through USB.

PROS:

Very high quality photos
Lovely LCD screen
quick boot up time
many advanced options
Long battery life

CONS:

Have to charge battery out of the unit unless accessories bought.
Mine came with a Japanese power adapter, so prepare to buy a converter/adapter.
Very high 1000ISO produces quiet alot of noise.

Overall, i would thoroughly reccomend this camera to amateur and professional photographers. With a huge range of options and high quality components, the T30 is an all round great camera.

4 out of 5 stars Very easy to use .......2006-08-25

Got this camera delivered via pixmania was a bit dubious because it was coming from france. Amazed the camera turned up within 4 to 5 days of ordering (inc weekend). Delivery service was excellent. Have got a Sony P120 indoors so kind of knew what to expect but was really amazed by how small the camera is and also the powerful functions (3" LCD Screen/7.2 Megapixels/High sensitivity ISO 1000) to name but a few. The fact that the camera is very easy to set up and use is another bonus. The only negative is the long time it takes to charge the battery up, took up to 5 hrs to charge the battery from empty !!

All in a very good camera and top delivery service and a sexy black colour to boot !!
