Product Description
The EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM is the first true Macro lens in the EF-S series. A dynamic, compact, fast-focusing lens providing dramatic detail that goes beyond the human eye.
Up close
With its ability to focus life-size images onto the image sensor, the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM offers true macro performance in the EF-S lens series. Having an effective focal length of approximately 96mm in 35mm format, it produces breathtaking close-up results. A minimum focusing distance of just 20cm gets you super close to your subject, filling your frame only with the subject detail you require.
A world in miniature
The EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM works in harmony with EF-S mount EOS cameras to let you explore an exciting new photographic dimension. Nature photographers will delight in the ability to capture the intricate beauty of tiny features. With capacity to reproduce an image on the sensor that is as large as the subject itself, you take your audience inside a magnificent miniature world.
Background blur
Portrait photographers will enjoy working with the large aperture, which narrows depth of field and creates beautiful background blur, making your subject stand out with dramatic effect.
Travelling light
The EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM adds enormous versatility to your kit while adding little weight. Its near-silent Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) provides super-fast precision auto-focusing with full-time manual override.
Resolution and quality
Over 60 years of optical engineering heritage have gone into producing a lens that delivers exacting picture quality standards. Canon lens technologies combine to produce high corner-to-corner resolution, brightness, contrast and balanced colour reproduction, throughout all focusing distances.
Built for digital
Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements with Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off a digital camera sens

FAB! Buy one now!.......2007-06-30
This is a fantastic lens. I was originally looking at some other cheaper makes but so dam glad I parted with the extra money (which in truth was not that much more).
As the others write, the lens is Sharpe and very salient. A silly little thing which I really like is the fact you can have the autofocus setting on and still be able to manually help it a little without the usual horrible noise from the motor sounding like you're about to severely damage it. No idea if this is really allowed or not but seems not to damage it and allows me to get that required picture much faster.
In short, another happy owner of this lens. If you want to see some pics taken with it go to www.flickr.com/photos/marcoastesiano where you can see some quick snaps of some fruit and the best is the matches. Notice the detail. The 60mm allows you to be at a good distance to take them.
Great lens!!
Nearly Perfect!!.......2007-05-23
The EF-S 60mm macro lens is fantastic, I have been using it for 9 months now and am so glad I bought it. Pictures have a wonderful level of sharpness and detail and the bokeh (aesthetic quality of out of focus areas) is outstanding! My only critisicm is that after using it for a while I find myself wishing that I had spent more money and bought the EF 100mm Macro 2.8 as the workable range would have been much higher, allowing me to get closer whilst being further away. Also an EF lens is more future-proof as it can be used on cropped sensor (400d/20d etc.) AND full-frame cameras (5D etc.) Overall though the lens produces lovely pictures and gives you a different perspective to your photography!
Macro heaven for not much moolah!.......2006-12-09
I've had this lens a few days now and had the opportunity to do a few sessions with it and am very, very pleased with the results.
The lens feels solid and well built, heavy enough without being too much.
This lens has an EF-S mount so has been designed specifically with the Canon range of digital cameras in mind such as 300D, 350D and the new 400D which I currently have this lens hooked up to. The lens is not suitable for Canon's 1D and 5D but I'm guessing if you afford one of those you'll likely own the 180mm macro 'L' lens ;)
Auto focus is good and fast in good light and the lens length does not change during focusing. There is provision on the front to attach a ring flash for real close macro work too. There is a distance indicator scale on the lens barrel and also a full time manual focus ring. Excellent!
The results from the lens are simply stunning. Clarity is unbelievable from my 400D. Focal length equates to 96mm because of the 1.6x crop factor of the sensor allowing 1:1 size shots and boy do they show the detail!
The lens focuses as close as 9cm for the full 1:1 macro and whilst this is fine for inanimate objects it may be tricky to release the full potential of the lens if taking shots of wildlife such as small insects for example. This is where I think a remote control shutter release would be a godsend as you can set the camera up and step away to avoid disturbing your subject - that's next on my list!
I've not had the chance to use it as such yet but by all accounts the lens works very well as a portrait lens and I can see no reason to disbelieve what I've read on various forums. In fact it may even lose you a few friends as the lens is so sharp it shows up e-v-e-r-y detail! A bit of soft focus tinkering in Photoshop may be in order for human portrait shots!
Have a look on my flickr profile (brainleek007) at the shots of the workings of a pocketwatch if you're in any doubt as to the quality of the lens.
Very highly recommended and the Amazon price is around £[...] cheaper than well known high street photography stores.
Sharp enough to make your eyes bleed.......2006-05-01
I bought this lens along with my eos 350D( it doesnt work with normal eos cameras as it is EF-S). The lens is very well made and as it is USM is silent and fast when focussing, which by the way is entirely internal( ie there is no change in length of the lens when focusing). The pictures are very, very sharp and the bokeh is brillant. Try it out and see- i can assure you that you wont be disappointed. It is also relatively small. As there is a 1.6 magnification in canon digital is actually works out to be 96 mm macro. This lens is really worth it- the only detractors are people who also use the normal eos full frame cameras. It is an excellent macro and potrait lens. This should have been a L lens.

Amazing.......2008-01-08
I could go on about this lens until I was blue in the face. It's simply a wonderful piece of kit and really should be the first addition to your kit after buying something like the 400D. 35mm x 1.6 is roughly the same as a 50mm on a full frame camera, so it makes for an ideal prime lens.
It's a little slow to focus and rather noisy in doing so; purple fringing is also an issue on occasion. Other than these minor issues it's near perfect at such a price. I tended to find with the stock lens that the flash was constantly in use and photos looked like (very good) holiday snaps as a result. The aperture on this means that this is almost never an issue. My only regret is discovering this 9 months after I bought my 400D.
A stunning piece of glass for not much money.......2007-05-29
This lens is fabulous, it makes a wonderful standard on Canon x1.6 sensor cameras, light and compact. The sharpness even at f2 is superb, on a x1.6 camera star images are sharp and round right to the edge of the frame, very impressive at any price point. Frankly this lens would be a bargain at twice the price. If you're interested in a 35mm lens for your Canon I really wouldn't think twice about getting this one - highly recommended

If you want the best..........2007-01-16
You simply won't better this mid-range zoom from Canon. Yes, it's an L series pro lens, but even for this superb level of engineering, image quality is stunningly sharp throughout the full focal range, and build quality is near enough bomb proof. For candid portrait work, the lens is simply in a class of it's own. I find this, and my 24-70mm f/2.8L USM are the two lenses that live on my EOS 5D for 95% of the time. It carries a typical Canon price tag, but really is worth every penny!
Simply the best.......2006-11-24
Yes it's big, yes it's heavy and yes it's WHITE but the results speak for themselves.
Simply the best, bar none.
Product Description
Medium telephoto lens with a macro feature for 1x magnification. Fluctuations in spherical aberrations caused by focusing are suppressed and high-quality images are obtained at all focusing distances. With eight aperture blades good background blur is obtained even when the aperture is decreased by one or two stops. A focusing limiter which limits the magnification to 0.25x is built-in.

Teaches you everything you need to know.......2008-01-10
I adore it. I resent having to remove it from my camera because it's such fun to use. However, this is not a lens for everyday use - it's for savouring and exploring new perspectives with. On an EOS 40D it's effectively a 160mm lens so it's really not a general purpose lens. It's a lens for savouring. Set everything on your camera to manual. Take your time, and re-learn everything. I love it.
On a 40D I have the advantage of using LiveView with digital zoom to help me focus in low-light conditions. If you're considering using it with a 350 or 400D make sure to try before you buy - you might find manual focus pretty challenging with the dim viewfinder that todays prosumer DSLRs have.
Nevertheless, I've no regrets: if you want to do macro photography this is the lens to start with. Oh, and get the best tripod you can afford; you'll need it! Consider a manfrotto 055XPROB and a ring flash to complete your macro capabilities.
5 star quality lens but...here I will be mostly about cons........2007-06-27
DISCLAIMER: Little dispute about the quality. Let the other reviewers be detailed about it.
Apart from macro I have been playing with it for portraits. I loved the f2.8 results. The photos of peoples' faces are among effortlessly the best of my portrait photos. I would seriously consider 50mm f1.4 or even 85mm f1.2 for people shots.
But this still is not used to be as main kit lens. It's use is really quite limited apart from proper macro because of 100mm and due to lack of Image Stabilizer shots of distant objects are not that great. I ended up having little use of it for things apart from close-up work. I like my flexible zoom too much.
But it's only for macro, right - isn't that why I splashed £360 on it in the first place?
I was also was slightly disappointed with how difficult was it to get crisp in-focus images if the camera is only handheld and how easily out of focus the object can get. In darker setting the autofocus hunts a bit slowly, so the lens is much nicer to focus manually. If you have expensive flash, nice smooth tripod and plenty of time to hang round in one place, then the lens might pay off greatly...
Simply a superb lens.......2007-03-01
I've had this a couple of days now and had a chance to have a good play and I'm suitably impressed.
The lens feels well built - a little lighter than I would have thought given the length but it doesn't feel flimsy.
Auto focus is good and fast enough for me and there's a switch on the side of the lens which limits the focusing so it avoids going down to its macro zone and thus saves time - a handy feature if you know you're shooting from more than 48cm.
There's a full time focus ring and a manual/auto focus switch. Focusing is internal meaning the lens doesn't grow in length as you're focusing which I really like.
Now down to the nitty gritty - image quality. I have to say it is excellent. I personally bought the lens after reading many reviews on the web and I have not been disappointed in the least. Background blur is also very beautiful. Images are incredibly sharp and also show excellent colour reproduction imo.
Another good feature of the lens is that whilst achieving 1:1 reroduction at it's closest focusing distance it still gives you about 15cm from the end of the lens to the subject. I own the 60mm ef-s macro too and the working distance is down to 9cm on that lens which can get tight at times so this offers a bit more breathing room.
On a camera with the APS-C sized sensor such as the Canon 400D what you're actually getting is a 160mm medium telephoto lens. It'll likely be too much for most portrait work but as a lens for excellent macros and general telephoto work it offers a useful level of magnification.
Price is pretty reasonable in my opinion given the exceptional image quality.
If you are looking for this for a Canon with an APS-C sensor for mostly macro/portrait then do seriously consider the ef-s 60mm lens as it really is awesome, and cheaper, and I reviewed it on amazon too if you're looking to weigh up the pros and cons. However, if you want a lens capable of super high quality macro shots with a 160mm focal length for a more telephoto bias with all the advantages that fixed focal length lenses bring then choose this!
All round awesome lens.
Sharp, sharp, sharp!!.......2004-06-08
I have only owned this lens for a short while but the results so far have been excellent. This lens is remarkably sharp and the addition of the USM makes this a truly great macro lens.
Product Description
Canon EF Autofocus Lenses Canon s reputation for excellence in optics has been well established for years. And with the introduction of EF lenses for the EOS, it s only getting better. EF Lenses have the largest diameter mount of any 35mm camera, which not only strengthens the whole system, but permits optical innovations never before possible. L-Series lenses have better sharpness and contrast because Canon uses aspherical elements to eliminate spherical aberrations. In addition, the L-Series telephotos use UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass to reduce chromatic aberration resulting in more accurate colors. A built-in Ultrasonic focusing Motor (indicated by USM) provides pro-quality AF speed with split-second accuracy. Telephoto lens with a softfocus feature. It can give razor-sharp snapshots as well as softfocus shots that do not look blurry. You have a choice of two softfocus settings. Even for softfocus shots, focusing with AF is quick and accurate. The EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 II USM is a lightweight telephoto zoom lens redesigned to give a better grip and improved electronic circuitry. An ideal addition to a EOS SLR photographers arsenal.---
Product Description
The 24mm lenses are the entry into ultra-wide angle photography. And this lens is the ideal starting point: its extremely sharp and offers superior correction of linear distortion and its f/2.8 aperture makes it easy to use with slow fine-grain films or in low light. It focuses as close as 10 inches (25cm) and for many photographers gives the ideal combination of a wide-angle "look" without excessive perspective distortion.
Product Description
The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM is a high-performance lens. It has been developed as a successor to the EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM, but with a wider zoom range to meet the needs of photographers using certain digital cameras.
The EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM has proven very popular with professional and advanced amateur photographers since it was introduced in 1995. However, the increasing use of digital cameras, most having sensors smaller than a 35mm film frame, has increased the demand for a high-performance standard zoom lens with a wider wide-angle setting. The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens meets this need. The optical design is based on the previous lens, but incorporates new design features that allow the broader focal length range while maintaining the superb image quality. At the same time, the minimum focusing distance has been reduced from 0.5 metres to 0.38 metres.Improved water and dust resistance ensure that it will become the leading standard zoom lens in the EOS system.
Features:
- High-speed AF
- Optimized lens coatings
- Highly resistant to dust and water droplets
- Min. focusing distance of 0.38m at all focal lengths
- Front of lens does not rotate during focusing
- Manual focus is possible in AF mode
- Only lead-free glass is used

Outstanding, amazing, awesome.......2007-12-12
I have been considering this lens for a long long time and have spent hours researching the net, looking through reviews, and working out if I could justify spending this much on a piece of glass.
I got the lens today and immediately set about taking some simple shots around the house of things like teddy bears, christmas decorations and several shots of the christmas tree, and after downloading them and checking out the results I was blown away!! The colour, contrast, and saturation were phenominal. Every image was absolutely tack sharp and just superb. I was really worried after reading hundreds of reviews that I might get a poor copy and get soft images but the copy I've got is outstanding. It blows every other lens right out the water for picture quality, even my 100-400L. I can't wait to get this lens out and about and see what it can really do.
If you have been considering this lens I would stop thinking about it and just do it. I had all the normal doubts, 'can I afford it?', 'will I get a decent copy?', 'should I get the 24-105?'. All I can say is after looking at the very first picture I took with this lens I knew I would have no regrets, and the hole in my bank balance seems totally worthwhile!!
If you have so much as even thought about this lens, you should buy it.
YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!
Not sharp enough on wide angle.......2007-08-19
The primary problem with this lens is that it doesn't focus accurately at the 24mm setting. You have to zoom in to 70mm, adjust and lock the focus, then zoom back out for the wider angle. This is infuriating if you need to work quickly - which in my case involves taking live action news-related or entertainment photos, where I can't afford to waste those seconds.
Otherwise, an attraction of this lens is the environmental seal, designed to keep out dust particles. However, after one year of use, my lens has several permanent dust particles deep inside (which have to be digitally removed from the photos later, on a computer), although admittedly unsealed lenses were a lot worse.
I wouldn't buy this product again; it's overpriced and produces images that aren't pin-sharp.
An excellent general purpose lens.......2006-11-24
Superb build quality and results. OK so it is slightly on the heavy side but once you see the results you won't care.
The versatile range and superior performance make this my favourite wedding lens and an excellent general purpose lens.
AMAZING.......2006-11-07
I have had this lens for over a year now and it has hardly ever come off the camara good optics colours and not forget the blur on it is just beautiful.. i wouldn't worry about the weight it makes the camera more substatial and helps with steadying it for stiller shots.. give it a go, you certainly won't be disapointed as for the price.. well you know you have to pay that little extra for good quality and this lens is definitly good quality.
Built like a tank, and almost as heavy - but superb quality.......2005-12-03
this is a very heavy lense at almost a kilogramme, and it's a really killer to carry around all day. But the images you can get from this lense are worth the shoulder strain - all of my best shots have been taken with it. Superb resolution, wonderful contrast and outstanding colour reproducton you'd expect from an L lense at this price. Sharpness is excellent - even at 2.8 it's very acceptable. It's also weather resistant. I just wish they could make it lighter. Or throw in some free physio therapy sessions.
