I've never been a big fan of Sony - they make great products, but I'm not willing to pay the extra that they put on the price for the Sony brand. The best alternative is Canon, and specifically, the MVX10i. My digital still camera is the Canon Powershot S40, and I've had nothing but good experiences with Canon cameras, so I decided to put my money into the MVX10i. It's an excellent camera - the video is amazingly sharp, there's no shortage of features to play with, and it uses a solid memory card standard (SD). Sadly, my S40 runs on CompactFlash cards, so I can't interchange them. Still pictures are taken at 2.0 megapixels, which is quite high for DV cameras. Perhaps the only caveat in my mind is a relatively slow adjustment to fast movement. It takes a little while for the image to stabilise, but that's not too big a problem. I definitely recommend this product.
