Zero Stars - Condensation Problem - Turn Off For One Hour.......2007-10-30
Absolutely shocking piece of equipment. It deserves zero stars. Mine started off as a great piece of kit but now it's totally unusable. I started getting the condensation error before the warranty ran out but it was internmittent at the time plus I live thousands of miles from the shop where I bought it (Comet!) so it never went back. From what digging I did at the time it seems I'm not alone in my frustration that Sony probably know all about this problem but the only suggestion to cure it is to take out the battery and give the camera a sharp spank on the bottom (seriously).
Let all buyers beware - the moment you get this error, and you are still covered under warranty, send the useless piece of junk back. If you're into serious movie making then you'd probably be better off with a Mini-DV (and yes, Sony ones are great - I'm not just knocking Sony) or hard disk camcorder than a DVD one (yes, I know it means you can't just take the disk out and stick it in a DVD player BUT-BUT-BUT you'll find that you can't even take your disk OUT if you get the condensation error, chew on that thought for a while).
If you're just want to take "pretty good quality" video (not DVD quality but a cut above what you might expect from a digital camera) then I'd thoroughly recommend you walk into a shop and ask to try out the 7.1MP Canon Ixus 75. Yup! Just checked the reviews of it here (about £150 and you can't go wrong) and they seem to agree with me. Great LCD screen, small enough to put in your pocket and take great photos too. Really, forget about Sony DVD camcorders, they're not worth the money. Most people aren't going to shoot movies with the things, so the shorter recording time you get with the Canon isn't going to be a problem for most people.
A Great Buy!.......2007-07-09
I've not owned this camera very long, but I'm mightily impressed with it so far. Great picture quality, small and compact and very, very easy to use. It may not come with an array of bells and whistles but, being a Sony product, what you do get is top quality. I upgraded to this from an old 8mm tape camcorder, which has a completely different mode of operation. Yet despite this, I had the Sony 105E up and running within minutes, without even referring to the owner's manual - it's that easy to use! Just turn it on and follow the instructions on the touch-screen LCD display.
If you're looking for a decent entry level DVD camcorder, then you won't go far wrong with this - especially as you can pick them up for under £140. There are some reviewers who complain about niff-naff, such as a lack of a USB port to link it with your computer. So what? It's no big deal - just finalise the disk, pop it into your PC and save it that way!
Pound for pound, this is one of the best deals on the market.
Nice camera shame about the lack of editing software.......2007-03-22
The camera is very nice, good quality and very easy to use BUT you cannot edit the video in any meaningful way. So you need to be very effective at setting up one shot wonders because you are only allowed to delete the last scene you shoot.
Sony actually say in the manual that the VOB files created cannot be viewed or edited after transfer to a PC. The format appears to be designed to prevent editing. I haven't had time to investigate third party VOB to AVI tools yet but selling a video camera with no means of editing files is just crazy and you shouldn't be forced in buying third party tools.
There are many cameras available which allow you to select different output formats and to be honest I now wish I had bought one of those. Anyone who wants to create short films for the internet or video blogs should definitely look elsewhere. Even someone who only wants to put films of family holidays together needs some sort of editing facilities.
I simply didn't realise when I bought the camera that there was nothing provided and that Sony appear to have gone out of their way to make editing difficult or even impossible. They seem to believe that users require DRM on their home movies!!! Even my Mum's old 8mm film can be edited. I cannot imagine what Sony were thinking.
wowie.......2007-01-27
now this is an impressive bit of kit i love the style and the weight of the camera the picture qulity is brilliant and the sound is crystal the size of the camera is just amazing for the amount of specs it has the dvds are a bit on the expencive side however but well worth getting as they are just amazing for what they do
again sony has hit the mark on quality and price for what you get this is just a brilliant camera
8 cm dvd`s can be edited with this. .......2006-10-21
This is aimed at any prospective purchasers because of the review given by steveyorkeei. These mini dvd`s can be both converted and edited using the program from AVS Media. It`s a full suite of applications and you may edit to your hearts content. The -RW discs will need to be finalised before converting/editing (same as lead in/lead out on a dvd writer) but this only takes a few seconds. The +RW discs can be converted/edited without having to perform this. The unusual recording format that this camera uses seems to have made it unpopular, and it can be bought quite cheaply now because people can`t usually either be bothered to spend a little time with it or lack the technical knowledge. (It is classed as an entry level device).A fully working version of the software is available free for download from AVS which leaves a watermark in the centre of the screen. There is no "use by date" on this download. It costs about $29 US to buy but because you can buy the camera so cheaply it`s a bargain. The camera itself is a joy to use. Just point and shoot in "Easy mode" will suffice. The media costs about £3 for each disc but they can be reused in excess of 1000X. All in all a truly great product which is what you expect from Sony.
